A suffocating darkness hangs over Desecrating the Altars of Purity: Unholy Rituals for the Goatlord from its very first notes. Riffs crawl through a thick layer of distortion, the bass rumbles ominously underneath, while keyboards seep in from the background like an integral part of some obscure ceremony. Unholy Black Pentagram builds its debut demo entirely around this oppressive atmosphere and barely loosens its grip throughout the recording.
The Catalan outfit clearly draws inspiration from a period when Black Metal had yet to settle into a clearly defined sound. Black, Death and Doom constantly bleed into one another, giving the demo its distinctly archaic character. The spirit of Necromantia, early Samael, Mystifier, Varathron, Goatlord and Impurity hangs heavily over the material, without Unholy Black Pentagram simply trying to copy any one of them.
The riffs are simple and heavy, with the tempo shifting between primitive eruptions and slow, dragging passages, while the bass plays a far more prominent role than it does in your average Black Metal recording. Sparse keyboards are layered over the top, not to add beauty or bombast, but to reinforce the music’s sinister ceremonial character. At times, it feels less like listening to a collection of songs and more like witnessing a ritual that just happens to be performed with guitars, bass and drums.
The production works entirely in the music’s favour. Everything sounds murky and grainy, as though the recording had spent years gathering mould in some damp cellar before somebody finally decided to put it onto cassette. Yet the material never disappears completely into an impenetrable mess. The instruments are given enough room to breathe, with the bass and keyboards in particular providing the songs with much of their identity.
Beneath all the noise, distortion and occult theatrics are riffs that actually manage to hold your attention. Sometimes lumbering and threatening, at other times vicious and surprisingly infectious, but always serving that same oppressive atmosphere. Unholy Black Pentagram never allows the material to descend into chaos merely for the sake of it, keeping the sense of menace firmly under control.
Desecrating the Altars of Purity belongs firmly to that Mediterranean tradition where mysticism, Doom and primitive Black/Death intertwine. This is music that does not seek to burst outward, but instead keeps pulling you deeper into its own dark confines.
WolfKult Religion releases this debut demo in a run of only fifty cassettes, which feels entirely appropriate for the material. Unholy Rituals for the Goatlord needs neither a large audience nor a polished presentation. This belongs on tape, buried somewhere at the back of a collection, waiting for someone foolish enough to break the seal.
A remarkably convincing debut from a band that understands exactly where the old occult spirit of Black Metal came from — and, more importantly, why it still works.

Een bedompte duisternis hangt vanaf de eerste tonen over Desecrating the Altars of Purity: Unholy Rituals for the Goatlord. Riffs kruipen door een dikke laag vervorming, de bas rommelt onheilspellend daaronder en vanuit de achtergrond sijpelen keyboards het geheel binnen als onderdeel van een obscure ceremonie. Unholy Black Pentagram bouwt zijn debuutdemo volledig rond die verstikkende sfeer en laat die gedurende de hele opname nauwelijks los.
Het Catalaanse gezelschap zoekt zijn inspiratie duidelijk in een periode waarin Black Metal nog geen vastomlijnd geluid had. Black, Death en Doom lopen voortdurend door elkaar en juist daardoor krijgt de demo dat archaïsche karakter. De geest van Necromantia, vroege Samael, Mystifier, Varathron, Goatlord en Impurity hangt nadrukkelijk boven het geheel, zonder dat Unholy Black Pentagram simpelweg één van die bands probeert te kopiëren.
De riffs zijn eenvoudig en zwaar, het tempo wisselt tussen primitieve uitbarstingen en slepende passages, terwijl de bas een veel belangrijkere rol krijgt dan binnen het gemiddelde Black Metal-geluid. Daar overheen liggen spaarzaam gebruikte keyboards die niet bedoeld zijn om schoonheid of bombast toe te voegen, maar de muziek juist een sinister ceremonieel karakter geven. Het voelt regelmatig alsof je naar een ritueel luistert dat toevallig met gitaren, bas en drums wordt uitgevoerd.
Ook de productie werkt volledig in het voordeel van de muziek. Alles klinkt bedompt en korrelig, alsof de opname jarenlang ergens in een vochtige kelder heeft gelegen voordat iemand besloot hem op cassette te zetten. Toch verdwijnt het materiaal nergens volledig in een ondoordringbare brij. De instrumenten hebben voldoende ruimte en vooral de bas en keyboards geven de nummers hun eigen identiteit.
Onder alle ruis, vervorming en occult theater zitten uiteindelijk riffs die de aandacht vasthouden. Soms log en dreigend, dan weer venijnig en verrassend aanstekelijk, maar altijd ondergeschikt aan diezelfde beklemmende sfeer. Unholy Black Pentagram laat de nummers nergens ontsporen in chaos omwille van de chaos, maar houdt de dreiging voortdurend onder controle.
Desecrating the Altars of Purity behoort nadrukkelijk tot die mediterrane traditie waarin mystiek, Doom en primitieve Black/Death samenkomen. Het is muziek die niet naar buiten wil breken, maar je juist steeds verder naar binnen trekt.
WolfKult Religion brengt deze debuutdemo uit in een oplage van slechts vijftig cassettes, wat eigenlijk perfect bij het materiaal past. Unholy Rituals for the Goatlord heeft niets nodig van een groot publiek of een glanzende presentatie. Dit hoort op tape, ergens achteraan in een verzameling, wachtend tot iemand onverstandig genoeg is het zegel te verbreken.
Een bijzonder overtuigend debuut van een band die precies begrijpt waar de oude occulte geest van Black Metal vandaan kwam — en belangrijker nog: waarom die nog altijd werkt.
