Hailing from Offenburg, Germany, situated on the edge of the Black Forest, Black Metal outfit Nocturnis has been active since 2019. Following the EP Aporia in 2020 and their debut album Unsegen in 2022, the band returns on November 6 with their second full-length, Drangsal, released through Fetzner Death Records. The past few years have seen several line-up changes, but Nocturnis now seems to have found its footing once again. For this new album, the Germans delve into one of the darkest chapters in history: the witch hunts. A period in which religious fanaticism, superstition and the abuse of power cost thousands of people their lives. The title Drangsal, which roughly translates as torment or severe suffering, is therefore particularly fitting. Eight compositions, spanning just over 44 minutes, take us through accusations, trials, executions and the consequences of an era in which a simple suspicion could be enough to send someone to the stake.
Musically, Nocturnis has opted for a particularly powerful and, above all, richly layered form of Black Metal. Anyone expecting a primitive, crackling production and a handful of barely distinguishable riffs is in for a surprise. Drangsal sounds absolutely massive. The production is incredibly thick, giving the music an almost overwhelming presence. The Germans enrich their Black Metal with substantial Death Metal influences, pronounced melodic guitar passages, impressive solos and atmospheric synthesizers. The overall sound is modern, powerful and remarkably full, yet fortunately without the individual instruments disappearing into the enormous wall of sound. A great deal of attention has clearly been paid to every detail, without sacrificing any of the music’s aggression.
An important role within Nocturnis is reserved for Dutch-born guitarist and producer Vincent Padrutt. And on Drangsal, he certainly shows that he knows exactly what he is doing. Not only is his guitar playing of an exceptionally high standard, but he has also done an excellent job on the production side of things. The melodic lines are carefully crafted, the harmonies fit together beautifully, and every now and then a solo is pulled out of the hat. Now, I am generally not a great admirer of extravagant guitar work within Black Metal, but in this case I am more than happy to make an exception. The solos are wonderfully melodic and genuinely enrich the compositions. There is no endless technical noodling simply to demonstrate how many notes someone can squeeze into a minute. Instead, we are treated to tasteful guitar passages in which feeling and melody take centre stage. Padrutt also handled the recording and production, while Nikita Kamprad was responsible for the mixing and mastering. Their collaboration has resulted in a truly impressive sound.
Following the brief opening piece Liturgie, the album gets properly underway with Tituba. The title refers to one of the first people accused during the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. This also makes it clear that Nocturnis does not limit its historical subject matter exclusively to Europe. The German-language lyrics give the concept a distinctive character and fit perfectly with the dark themes explored by the band. Matthias Störck’s vocals are fierce and aggressive, providing a striking contrast to the occasionally almost graceful guitar melodies. It is precisely this tension between brutality and melody that makes Drangsal so interesting. While the guitars regularly have room to explore their melodic side, the underlying rhythm section ensures that the music retains its power.
With Thaumaturg, Düsternis and the more than seven-minute-long Der letzte Hort, Nocturnis continues to develop its musical approach. The compositions provide plenty of room for tempo changes, melodic passages and forceful rhythms. The Death Metal influences add extra weight, giving the whole thing a distinctly muscular character. The synthesizers are used to deepen the atmosphere without constantly demanding attention. That is no insignificant detail, because with so many musical ingredients there is always the danger of an album becoming overcrowded. Nocturnis, however, manages to keep the various elements together rather convincingly. The melodies act as the connecting thread, while the aggression ensures that the musical foundation remains firmly intact.
Fans of Groza, Gaerea, Der Weg einer Freiheit and Thron will undoubtedly find plenty to enjoy on Drangsal. This is not to suggest that Nocturnis simply copies these bands, but the combination of modern Black Metal, imposing production, a substantial dose of melody and considerable aggression clearly places them in similar musical territory. The emphasis is not exclusively on speed, either. The more measured passages are given sufficient attention, allowing the music to breathe and the melodic lines to come into their own. Ultimately, the excellent guitar work is one of the main reasons why I find this album such an enjoyable listen. Even the solos, which would not normally get me particularly excited, regularly manage to put a smile on my face.
With Das Licht der nächsten Sonne and Dämmernis, Nocturnis works towards the closing title track. At over nine minutes, Drangsal is the longest composition on the album and brings the historical concept to its conclusion. The band has clearly attempted to make this second full-length more than just a collection of individual songs. The subject matter, German-language lyrics and musical arrangements are intended to tell a story together. Naturally, this requires a certain amount of attention from the listener, but with a running time of just over 44 minutes, the album remains manageable enough to be enjoyed in its entirety.
What strikes me most is just how effortlessly Drangsal manages to win me over. Normally, this modern and highly melodic form of Black Metal is not exactly my preferred musical territory. I generally favour something dirtier, with a rougher edge and less emphasis on technical refinement. Nor am I particularly fond of albums on which guitarists feel the need to demonstrate their soloing abilities at every possible opportunity. Yet here, it all works surprisingly well. The guitar melodies are strong, the solos genuinely contribute something, and the combination with the heavier Death Metal elements gives the music enough muscle to prevent it from drowning in overly sweet melodies. Of course, it also helps that the production is genuinely excellent. Everything sounds huge and powerful without the music losing its cohesion.
That does not mean Drangsal suddenly makes me abandon my preference for raw and primitive Black Metal. The difference in approach is simply too great for that. Nocturnis deliberately opts for a polished, modern and richly arranged sound in which melody and technical proficiency play a significant role. Purists who prefer their Black Metal to sound as though it were recorded somewhere in a damp basement on a worn-out cassette recorder will probably be better off looking elsewhere. But that does not have to be a problem. Black Metal has developed so many different forms over the years that there should be plenty of room for a band approaching its music in this manner.
With Drangsal, Nocturnis delivers a thoroughly convincing second album. Vincent Padrutt’s excellent guitar work, the massive production and the successful combination of Black and Death Metal are particularly impressive. The melodic solos and atmospheric synthesizers add another dimension to the compositions, while the German-language lyrics and historical subject matter provide plenty of substance. The fact that I am not normally particularly enthusiastic about this musical direction only makes the result all the more surprising. I simply cannot deny that this album goes down remarkably well. Sometimes, even as a devoted admirer of the rawer side of the genre, there is no need to make things complicated when a band has simply delivered a damn good record. And that is exactly what Nocturnis has done here.

Nederlands:
