English:
Norwegian musician Bjørn Dencker, better known as Aldrahn, has built quite a history within Black Metal. His work with Dødheimsgard in particular earned him a reputation as an unconventional vocalist who has never paid much attention to the usual conventions of the genre. With Urarv, a project he founded back in 2003, he follows an equally unpredictable musical path. After Aurum in 2017 and Substratum in 2023, the third full-length album, Nychta Psychis, is now set for release on October 16 through Darkness Shall Rise Productions. Five compositions, spanning just over 32 minutes, once again reveal Aldrahn at his most unpredictable.
Anyone familiar with Urarv will know that straightforward Norwegian Black Metal is not what you should expect here. Although the band’s musical roots remain firmly planted in the genre, the compositions are constantly disrupted by unusual rhythmic structures, psychedelic excursions, and unexpected tempo changes. The result is an album that refuses to reveal itself easily, often leaving you with the impression that the musicians deliberately take a different turn just when you think you know where the music is heading.
The opening track, Dødheimsgard, is remarkable for its title alone. It is a direct reference to Aldrahn’s former band, which was certainly no stranger to musical experimentation either. The track establishes a solid foundation of raw Black Metal, but it soon becomes clear that Urarv has no intention of limiting itself to that framework. The guitars move between aggressive riffs and dissonant melodies, while the rhythm section regularly introduces unexpected twists. Nevertheless, enough recognisable aggression remains to prevent the whole thing from completely spiralling out of control.
The title track, Nychta Psychis, reveals another side of the band. Acoustic passages and psychedelic effects create an unsettling atmosphere, allowing the music to develop gradually without necessarily building towards a predictable climax. At times, the atmosphere becomes distinctly uncomfortable, and that is precisely where much of its appeal lies. Rather than overwhelming the listener through sheer speed or violence, Urarv relies on a persistent sense of unease.
Naturally, Aldrahn himself plays a leading role. His vocal delivery remains as recognisable as it is peculiar. Harsh outbursts alternate with theatrical recitations, almost mocking vocal lines, and passages where he seems to lose himself completely in his own musical universe. Not everything sounds particularly pleasant, although that was probably never the intention. At times, his performance borders on the absurd, yet it is precisely this quality that gives the music a character many other bands lack. His presence is impossible to ignore, even if it will certainly not appeal to everyone.
With the lengthy titled When Consciousness Identifies With Matter It Is Lost, the musical unpredictability is taken even further. The composition shifts between psychedelic sounds, restless guitar passages, and unexpected rhythmic changes. Particularly striking is the prominent role of the bass guitar. Rather than simply following the guitars, it frequently establishes its own direction within the arrangements. This creates a dynamic that gives the music an almost progressive character without constantly pushing technical complexity into the foreground.
Operation Genocide is among the most remarkable pieces on the album. The rhythms occasionally develop an almost jazz-like flexibility, while Aldrahn once again explores every possible corner of his vocal range. The song addresses the destructive consequences of human greed and warfare, a subject that fits remarkably well with its restless musical interpretation. It is also a composition in which Urarv’s experimental ambitions become both a strength and a weakness. The unexpected twists keep things interesting, but they occasionally come at the expense of coherence.
Closing track Youniverse introduces further Eastern-sounding melodies and industrial elements, once again demonstrating the broad musical interests of the musicians involved. At the same time, it becomes increasingly apparent that Urarv is not particularly concerned with establishing easily recognisable structures. The music constantly moves between different ideas, leaving the listener to decide whether all the pieces ultimately fall into place.
The production suits the unconventional character of the album rather well. Do not expect a polished, modern wall of sound, but rather a raw and somewhat abrasive recording in which the individual instruments have sufficient room to breathe. The lively bass lines particularly benefit from this approach. Everything occasionally sounds deliberately uncomfortable and unpolished, which adds a certain charm to the proceedings. Nevertheless, a little more power in the overall sound would not have hurt at certain moments.
Nychta Psychis is therefore not an album that gives up its secrets without a struggle. Its five compositions contain enough interesting ideas, strong riffs, and remarkable passages to justify repeated listening. On the other hand, the band’s experimental tendencies sometimes become so dominant that the music begins to lose coherence and intensity. The theatrical vocals and abrupt transitions, in particular, can seriously disrupt the otherwise dark atmosphere.
Still, Urarv deserves credit for refusing to remain within the familiar boundaries of Black Metal. Aldrahn clearly has little interest in meeting expectations, resulting in an album that can be as fascinating as it is exhausting. Nychta Psychis will undoubtedly test the patience of listeners who prefer their Black Metal straightforward, but those willing to embrace a substantial dose of musical eccentricity will find plenty to sink their teeth into. Not every unexpected turn leads to a convincing destination, but the journey itself is certainly anything but predictable.

Nederlands:
