Hailing from Orléans, France, Les Bâtards du Roi return with Ici Meurt ma Joie, a three-track EP scheduled for release on October 16 through Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions. Formed in 2022, the band has managed to establish a distinctive identity in a relatively short period of time, combining Melodic Black Metal with medieval themes and a strong sense of storytelling. Following last year’s Les Chemins de l’Exil, the story now continues with a new chapter set in a world of betrayal, superstition, and sinister rituals.
At the heart of the concept remains the story of two brothers who wander through a devastated kingdom after murdering their king. On this EP, they arrive at a remote village where witchcraft and ancient cults dominate everyday life. An encounter with a mysterious witch draws them deeper into a world of darkness and sorcery. The narrative takes an increasingly sinister turn, once again demonstrating how important the conceptual side of the band truly is. The lyrics and music form a cohesive whole, with the melodies and arrangements reinforcing the tragedy of the story.
Musically, the band continues along its established path, although there are some noticeable differences compared to their previous work. Ici Meurt ma Joie sounds considerably more polished than Les Chemins de l’Exil. The production is clearer, the individual instruments are easier to distinguish, and the melodic guitar passages in particular are given more room to breathe. However, this refinement is not disturbing in the slightest. The music retains enough sharpness and aggression to remain convincing, while the cleaner production actually enhances the epic character of the compositions. It is a development that suits the band well, although I can imagine that those who prefer a rawer sound might see things differently.
The title track, Ici Meurt ma Joie, immediately demonstrates where Les Bâtards du Roi draw their strength from. The guitars move between melancholic melodies and fierce, occasionally quite fast passages. There is a natural sense of dynamics throughout, with the band resisting the temptation to keep its foot permanently on the accelerator. Instead, there is sufficient room for more restrained moments. The vocals remain fierce and convincing, while the melodies lend the composition an almost tragic atmosphere. It immediately sets the tone for the remainder of the EP.
On Et la Nuit s’éternise, the music gains an additional dimension through a guest appearance by Diffamie, known from the equally French Galibot. Her vocals provide an interesting contrast to the harsher vocal delivery, adding a more dramatic dimension to the track. The interplay between the different vocal styles gives the composition additional depth. The band manages to maintain a convincing balance between aggression and melancholy without allowing the music to descend into excessive bombast. This might very well be the track where the storytelling ambitions of Les Bâtards du Roi become most apparent.
Closing track Où Pourrit la Lumière brings the EP to a more forceful conclusion. The guitar work takes on a somewhat more aggressive character, while the rhythm section makes its presence felt more prominently. Nevertheless, melody continues to play an important role here as well. The band succeeds in bringing these different elements together convincingly, demonstrating that Melodic Black Metal does not necessarily have to sacrifice intensity in favour of atmosphere. The composition therefore serves as a fitting conclusion to this short but carefully constructed chapter.
What Les Bâtards du Roi clearly understand is that melody does not automatically have to mean accessibility. Their music retains enough dark undertones, while the alternation between fast, aggressive passages and more measured sections keeps things interesting throughout. The medieval themes also provide the band with a recognisable identity, without requiring an abundance of traditional folk instruments or theatrical embellishments.
There is, however, one point of criticism. With a running time of just over thirteen minutes, Ici Meurt ma Joie comes to an end rather quickly. Just as the music seems to be reaching its full potential, the story is already over. Although the three compositions individually offer sufficient substance, the EP consequently feels more like an intermediate chapter than a completely self-contained work. That is not necessarily a problem, but it certainly increases the desire for another full-length album.
With Ici Meurt ma Joie, Les Bâtards du Roi continue their development in convincing fashion. The production has become somewhat smoother, but fortunately without sacrificing the dark atmosphere or musical intensity. Once again, the Frenchmen successfully combine their melodic approach with sufficient aggression, while the underlying narrative gives the compositions additional meaning. A strong EP with essentially one drawback: just when you are fully immersed in it, it is already over.
