From Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, Mannveira finally return after five years of silence. Formed in 2010, the Black Metal band released their first full-length album, Vítahringur, in 2021, establishing themselves within Iceland’s increasingly extensive Black Metal scene. With Vesöld, the five musicians now present their second full-length, scheduled for release on October 16 through Dark Descent Records. Seven tracks, just over 36 minutes of music, and once again a substantial dose of darkness emerging from that peculiar island in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Mannveira belong to a generation of Icelandic bands that take the traditional foundations of Black Metal and twist them into something distinctly their own, often in a rather unsettling manner. Dissonant guitars, distorted melodies, and an oppressive atmosphere are the main ingredients. Yet the band does not rely entirely on musical chaos. It is precisely their ability to find coherence within this apparent disorder that gives their compositions their distinctive character.
On Vesöld, Mannveira seem to have placed greater emphasis on finding a balance between aggression and melody. At times, the guitars sound particularly vicious, with dissonant chords following one another at a relentless pace. At the same time, melodic passages regularly emerge, providing some much-needed breathing space. Do not expect cheerful melodies or easily digestible choruses, however. These melodies possess a cold, melancholic character that only reinforces the album’s dark atmosphere.
The rhythm section also plays an important role. The drums alternate between furious outbursts and slower, almost lumbering passages, with the changes in tempo helping to keep the music interesting. This gives the guitars enough room to develop, preventing the music from becoming trapped in a continuous wall of dissonance. Some of the slower sections even carry a slight Doom Metal character, although Mannveira never truly abandon their Black Metal foundations.
The vocals of Illugi Kristinsson further contribute to the album’s unsettling nature. His raw, occasionally almost desperate delivery fits perfectly with the twisted melodies. These are vocals that express more than simple aggression, allowing a certain vulnerability and despair to seep through. This adds another dimension to the music and prevents the album from turning into a succession of indistinguishable screams.
Opening track Lygar Himinsins sets the tone for an album in which the band constantly experiments with tension and dynamics. On Af Bergi Brotin, the rhythmic accents create an interesting sense of variation, while Stormur brings the aggression more prominently to the foreground. The dissonant guitar work remains a constant presence, but never completely overwhelms the compositions. Mannveira seem to understand increasingly well that even within this particular style of Black Metal, a certain degree of restraint can actually increase the overall impact.
The production also deserves attention. Although Vesöld retains its raw and abrasive character, the overall sound is remarkably well-balanced. Each instrument has sufficient room to breathe, and the guitars in particular manage to convey their complex arrangements convincingly. Fortunately, there has been no attempt to smooth away every rough edge. It is precisely that somewhat uncomfortable sound that gives this music much of its identity.
What makes Vesöld interesting is the way Mannveira bring together their various musical elements. The aggression remains firmly in place, but is regularly contrasted with atmospheric passages and melodic accents. In this respect, the band appear to have taken another step forward in their songwriting development. Whereas their debut occasionally had a somewhat elusive character, the new material sounds more purposeful and better structured.
Nevertheless, this is not an album that immediately reveals all its secrets. The dissonant guitar passages and occasionally unpredictable compositions demand a fair amount of attention from the listener. Furthermore, the twisted melodies can become somewhat exhausting over extended listening sessions. But for those willing to immerse themselves in this musical darkness, there is certainly plenty to discover.
With Vesöld, Mannveira deliver a convincing second full-length that demonstrates how Iceland’s Black Metal scene continues to produce interesting music. The combination of aggression, dissonance, and an underlying melodic menace gives the album a recognisable identity. Not everything is immediately accessible, and fortunately, it does not need to be. Mannveira pursue their own uncompromising approach, resulting in an album that leaves a lasting impression primarily through its oppressive atmosphere and dynamic songwriting.
