With When The Mist Falls…, Belgian outfit Radbraker presents its debut album, scheduled for release on October 30, 2026, through the French label Osmose Productions. Although the band was only formed in the summer of 2024, the musicians involved are certainly no strangers to the Flemish Black Metal underground. Having previously been active in bands such as Aerdryk, Dudsekop and Nil Miserans, these gentlemen have already gained plenty of experience. Radbraker delivers a raw, atmospheric form of Black Metal in which the Flemish language, historical themes and a considerable dose of aggression come together. The band’s name refers to breaking on the wheel, a particularly gruesome method of execution from centuries past. Hardly a subtle name, then, but the same can be said about the music.
The album consists of five compositions with a total playing time of almost forty minutes. Fortunately, the Belgians do not limit themselves to constantly pushing the tempo. Naturally, there are plenty of blast beats, tearing guitars and venomous vocals, but Radbraker also understands that aggression becomes far more effective when balanced with sufficient variation. The band regularly introduces passages where the pace slows down and the melodies are given more room to breathe. It is precisely during these moments that the atmospheric character of the music truly comes to the surface.
The more than ten-minute-long Kadaverdauw immediately makes quite a statement. The composition moves between furious outbursts and more extended passages, with the guitars continuously maintaining a grim undertone. The melodies carry something ominous without the band having to resort to excessive keyboard arrangements or other unnecessary embellishments. It is primarily the guitar work that determines the atmosphere. An approach that works remarkably well and gives the music a distinctly authentic character.
What makes Radbraker interesting is the way the band manages to intertwine aggression and melancholy. The compositions contain enough variation to maintain the listener’s attention, while the raw vocals constantly add a vicious edge to the proceedings. At times, the vocalist sounds as though he is desperately trying to squeeze the very last breath from his lungs. It fits perfectly with the album’s themes, which revolve around oppression, despair, hatred and, ultimately, resistance.
These themes run like a thread throughout the album. The five tracks collectively tell a story in which the oppressed eventually rise against their oppressors. Katharsis, in particular, plays an important role, marking the transition from resignation to active resistance. The Dutch-language lyrics further strengthen Radbraker’s identity, giving the music a recognisably Flemish character without the band deliberately venturing into Folk Metal territory. For that, everything sounds far too grim and uncompromising.
Still, When The Mist Falls… is not exclusively a succession of successful moments. The longer compositions demand considerable attention, and not every passage manages to maintain the same level of tension. Occasionally, a musical idea is stretched just a little further than necessary, causing the album to lose some of its directness here and there. On the other hand, the band takes the time to properly develop its songs rather than simply stringing together a collection of riffs. Furthermore, the production is powerful enough to allow the individual instruments to come through clearly without sacrificing all the rough edges.
With Danst, bok dans and closing track Duizend haerden, Radbraker remains faithful to its chosen direction. The combination of aggression, melody and a dark atmosphere forms the foundation, while the constant shifts in tempo provide the necessary dynamics. These are compositions that aim to be more than just a few minutes of musical violence, although such ambition also demands something from the listener.
With When The Mist Falls…, Radbraker delivers a convincing debut that particularly excels in its grim atmosphere and the strong connection between music and lyrical themes. The band possesses enough experience and musical insight to avoid falling into the trap of monotony, although certain passages could certainly have benefited from a more concise approach. The album brings little that is genuinely groundbreaking to the genre, but it certainly demonstrates that the Flemish underground has gained another interesting name. A record that does not reveal all its secrets immediately and, for that very reason, invites repeated listening.

Nederlands:
