Review: Bokkerijders – Crush Kill Destroy

English:

From Ghent, Belgium, come Bokkerijders, a band that takes its name from the notorious gangs said to have operated mainly in Limburg during the eighteenth century. Whether these Belgian musicians actually intend to ride flying goats across the night sky remains doubtful. With their debut album Crush Kill Destroy, however, they certainly seem to be up to no good. Formed in 2021, the band released its first demo a year later and made its presence known in 2023 with Silver Dust and Swords of Gold. Now, through Personal Records, their first full-length album sees the light of day.

Anyone expecting folkloric Black Metal based on the name Bokkerijders can immediately abandon that idea. The Belgians have little interest in musical boundaries and throw Black Metal, Thrash, Speed Metal and old-fashioned Heavy Metal together without the slightest hesitation. Think of the filth of Aura Noir, the aggression of early Slayer and the unpolished mentality of the old Metal scene. The result is music built primarily around riffs, energy and a healthy dislike of unnecessary embellishment.

With eight tracks and a running time of almost 46 minutes, the musicians have plenty of opportunity to develop their ideas. The production is raw and abrasive, yet leaves enough room for the individual instruments to breathe. The guitars, in particular, demand attention. Riffs follow one another at a rapid pace, with the band frequently shifting from aggressive outbursts to slower, almost traditional Heavy Metal passages.

The title track Crush Kill Destroy sums up the band’s musical approach rather well. No complicated structures or forced displays of technical ability, just solid guitar work and a rhythm section that keeps pushing everything forward. Calcination Pyre also demonstrates that Bokkerijders does not need much to deliver a convincing piece of blackened Metal.

Things become more interesting when the band allows itself a little more room to manoeuvre. Tracks such as Primordial Phosphorous Eclipse, Locked in Gilded Chains Are the Guillotine’s Blade and the closing Fire Chaser offer opportunities for greater dynamics and variation through their longer running times. It is precisely in the passages where the tempo is pulled back that the guitar work gains additional weight. The combination of filthy Black Metal and classic Heavy Metal riffs gives the music a character that reaches beyond aggression alone.

The vocals are raw, abrasive and perfectly suited to the unpolished nature of the compositions. It is also refreshing that Bokkerijders does not constantly try to sound as extreme as possible. There is room for the occasional melody, and a well-placed guitar solo is certainly not out of the question. Fortunately, these solos generally serve the songs rather than becoming exercises in technical showmanship.

Yet Crush Kill Destroy is more than just a collection of hard-hitting Metal tracks. In September 2025, guitarist Wouter Lemmens passed away, inevitably giving this debut an additional emotional significance. The album serves as a lasting reminder of his contribution to the band. Bokkerijders has since decided to continue as a trio, but this record also marks the closing of an important chapter.

What particularly appeals to me about Bokkerijders’ musical approach is that the band does not need elaborate explanations to justify its existence. The influences are recognisable, the music is unpolished, and the emphasis is firmly placed on well-written riffs. Not every passage needs to be groundbreaking to be convincing. Sometimes a well-chosen tempo, a filthy guitar tone and a rhythm that pounds relentlessly forward are more than enough.

Crush Kill Destroy is therefore a debut that takes its title rather seriously. Bokkerijders delivers a substantial dose of old-fashioned Metal in which Black and Thrash constantly collide. An album without pretensions, but with character, conviction and, above all, a considerable amount of guitar violence. The flying goats can remain in their stables for now; these gentlemen can get quite far without any supernatural assistance.

Nederlands:
