The fact that Wampyric Rites and Oath of Malignancy essentially consist of the same line-up makes The Oath more than just a split between two bands. They are two different faces of the same Ecuadorian underground entity, each following its own path but with the same hands pulling the strings. This makes it all the more interesting to hear just how different the outcome can be.
Wampyric Rites opens with ‘Transilvania’ and immediately takes the upper hand. Nothing here feels forced. The track slowly crawls forward, wrapped in that characteristic musty, nocturnal atmosphere where melodies gain their strength primarily through repetition. The raw production does not get in the way of the music but instead reinforces the feeling that this was recorded somewhere far beyond civilisation. Everything sounds primitive and distant, yet never without purpose. Beneath the grainy surface there is enough melody to keep the track compelling throughout its seven-plus minutes.
It is mainly the natural ease with which Wampyric Rites creates this atmosphere that makes ‘Transilvania’ so convincing. There are no unnecessary embellishments or attempts to make the composition bigger than it needs to be; riffs are repeated until their hypnotic effect has fully taken hold. As a result, ‘Transilvania’ does not merely sound raw, but genuinely possessed. Wampyric Rites knows exactly within which boundaries it wants to operate and turns those limitations into strengths.
Oath of Malignancy takes a different route with ‘Necro Sacramento Impio’. Here, the emphasis lies much more firmly on the old Hellenic Black Metal tradition. The dragging riffs, prominent bass and occult atmosphere inevitably bring the Greek scene of the nineties to mind, without the track simply becoming an imitation of it. The pacing and ritualistic undertones suit the material perfectly, and taken on its own, this is simply a strong track.
Still, something of the magic that Oath of Malignancy managed to conjure on the debut tape Sabbath Witchcraft is missing. On that release, the primitive production, bass, keyboards and compositions came together almost perfectly, creating a strange and genuinely authentic atmosphere. ‘Necro Sacramento Impio’ contains many of those same ingredients and is unmistakably Oath of Malignancy, but it never quite reaches that same suffocating level of conviction. Perhaps that says as much about the quality of the debut tape as it does about this contribution.
The contrast becomes even more interesting considering that essentially the same musicians are behind both names. While Oath of Malignancy consciously draws from a Hellenic vocabulary, Wampyric Rites seems less concerned with operating within a particular framework here. ‘Transilvania’ consequently feels more spontaneous and natural, whereas ‘Necro Sacramento Impio’ comes across as slightly more deliberate in its construction.
With two tracks and just over fourteen minutes of music, The Oath does exactly what a good split should do. Oath of Malignancy delivers a solid contribution that should have little trouble satisfying devotees of the old Greek school, but on this occasion it has to concede victory to Wampyric Rites. ‘Transilvania’ simply possesses more atmosphere, more natural flow and, ultimately, greater conviction.
Nevertheless, this is yet another WolfKult Religion release that you absolutely should not miss.

Dat Wampyric Rites en Oath of Malignancy in principe uit dezelfde line-up bestaan, maakt The Oath meer dan zomaar een split tussen twee bands. Het zijn twee verschillende gezichten van dezelfde Ecuadoriaanse ondergrond, ieder met een eigen benadering, maar met dezelfde handen aan het roer. Juist daardoor wordt het interessant om te horen hoe verschillend de uitkomst kan zijn.
Wampyric Rites opent met ‘Transilvania’ en trekt meteen aan het langste eind. De band hoeft niets te forceren. Het nummer kruipt langzaam vooruit, gehuld in die typische muffe, nachtelijke atmosfeer waarin melodieën vooral door herhaling hun uitwerking krijgen. De ruwe productie zit de muziek niet in de weg, maar versterkt juist het gevoel dat dit ergens ver buiten de bewoonde wereld is vastgelegd. Alles klinkt primitief en afstandelijk, maar nooit vrijblijvend. Onder de korrelige oppervlakte zit voldoende melodie om het nummer gedurende zijn ruim zeven minuten interessant te houden.
Het is vooral de vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee Wampyric Rites deze sfeer neerzet die overtuigt. Geen onnodige fratsen of pogingen om de compositie groter te maken dan noodzakelijk; riffs worden herhaald totdat ze hun hypnotiserende werking hebben gedaan. ‘Transilvania’ klinkt daardoor niet alleen rauw, maar vooral bezield. Wampyric Rites weet inmiddels precies binnen welke grenzen het wil opereren en gebruikt die beperkingen in zijn voordeel.
Oath of Malignancy bewandelt met ‘Necro Sacramento Impio’ een ander pad. Hier ligt het zwaartepunt veel nadrukkelijker bij de oude Hellenic Black Metal-traditie. De slepende riffs, prominente bas en occulte sfeer roepen onvermijdelijk herinneringen op aan de Griekse scene uit de jaren negentig, zonder dat het nummer simpelweg als een kopie daarvan aanvoelt. Het tempo en de rituele ondertoon passen uitstekend bij het materiaal en op zichzelf is dit dan ook gewoon een sterk nummer.
Toch ontbreekt er iets van de magie die Oath of Malignancy op de debuuttape Sabbath Witchcraft wist op te roepen. Daar vielen de primitieve productie, bas, keyboards en composities haast perfect samen tot een eigenaardige en authentieke atmosfeer. ‘Necro Sacramento Impio’ bezit dezelfde ingrediënten en is zonder twijfel herkenbaar Oath of Malignancy, maar weet diezelfde beklemmende overtuigingskracht niet volledig te evenaren. Dat zegt misschien net zoveel over de kwaliteit van die debuuttape als over deze bijdrage.
Het contrast wordt des te opvallender doordat achter beide namen in wezen dezelfde muzikanten schuilgaan. Waar Oath of Malignancy bewust teruggrijpt naar een Hellenic idioom, lijkt Wampyric Rites op deze split minder bezig met een bepaald kader. ‘Transilvania’ voelt daardoor spontaner en natuurlijker, terwijl ‘Necro Sacramento Impio’ iets nadrukkelijker geconstrueerd overkomt.
Met twee nummers en iets meer dan veertien minuten speelduur doet The Oath precies wat een goede split moet doen. Oath of Malignancy levert een prima bijdrage die liefhebbers van de oude Griekse school zonder problemen zal aanspreken, maar moet deze ronde toch aan Wampyric Rites laten. ‘Transilvania’ bezit simpelweg meer sfeer, meer vanzelfsprekendheid en uiteindelijk vooral meer overtuigingskracht.
Maar desondanks is dit weer zo’n WolfKult Religion release die je absoluut niet mag missen.
