That is exactly the impression the Belgian trio Shewolff leaves with We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die, a record that throws subtlety out the window and spends just over twenty minutes delivering a relentless kick to everything polished, predictable, and overly refined.
Although this is the band’s first official release, Shewolff already sounds remarkably confident. The music draws heavily from the era when punk, speed metal, and the earliest forms of black metal still bled into one another. Echoes of Venom and Bathory are impossible to ignore, while the reckless spirit of Motörhead and modern acts such as Midnight also lingers throughout the record. Yet rather than simply recreating the past, the band reshapes those influences into something that feels raw, immediate, and entirely their own.
From the opening moments of Eternal Night, there is no easing into the experience. Razor-sharp riffs, pounding rhythms, and snarling vocals drive the songs forward with barely a moment to catch your breath. The title track, We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die, perfectly captures the band’s philosophy: cynical, rebellious, and delivered with a grin that never undermines its intensity. Tracks like Guillotines and Nail + Burn follow the same approach, favouring direct impact over unnecessary complexity. Every song arrives with a clear purpose and leaves before its momentum begins to fade.
The production complements that philosophy perfectly. Rather than chasing modern perfection, Shewolff embraces a rough, gritty sound that feels alive and unfiltered. The edges remain deliberately jagged, giving the record the atmosphere of a sweat-soaked underground club rather than a pristine recording studio. It is exactly the kind of production these songs demand.
That said, the album’s unwavering commitment to high-energy aggression occasionally works against it. Because most of the material follows a similar blueprint, some riffs begin to blur together over time. The intensity rarely drops, but a few more unexpected twists or memorable melodic hooks could have given the record greater individuality and staying power.
What ultimately makes We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die so enjoyable is its complete lack of pretence. Shewolff has no interest in proving how technical, progressive, or innovative they can be. Instead, they focus on writing honest, energetic songs that capture the rebellious spirit upon which extreme metal was built in the first place. That sincerity is contagious.

It is a filthy, energetic blast of blackened punk and rock ‘n’ roll that thrives on attitude, conviction, and raw enthusiasm. Fans of primitive, no-frills underground metal will find plenty to enjoy here, even if the record occasionally sacrifices variety in favour of pure momentum.

Je hoeft niet altijd ingewikkelde concepten, eindeloze speelduur of duizelingwekkende technische hoogstandjes te hebben om indruk te maken. Soms is een vuile versterker, een handvol venijnige riffs en een flinke dosis frustratie voldoende. Dat lijkt precies het uitgangspunt van het Belgische Shewolff, dat met We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die alle subtiliteit overboord gooit en in iets meer dan twintig minuten een flinke schop uitdeelt aan alles wat te netjes, te veilig en te voorspelbaar is.
Hoewel de band nog relatief jong is, klinkt deze eerste officiële release opvallend zelfverzekerd. Shewolff put hoorbaar uit de eerste generatie extreme metal, waar de scheidslijn tussen punk, speed metal en de ontluikende black metal nog nauwelijks bestond. Venom en Bathory liggen voor de hand als referentiepunten, maar ook de compromisloze houding van bands als Midnight en Motörhead is nooit ver weg. Toch voelt het nergens als een simpele ode aan het verleden; de band gebruikt die invloeden als fundament voor een eigen, smerige cocktail.
Vanaf opener Eternal Night wordt direct duidelijk dat de remmen nergens op gaan. Korte, agressieve riffs vliegen de luisteraar om de oren, terwijl de ritmesectie alles vooruit blijft stuwen. De titeltrack We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die vat de filosofie van de band misschien nog wel het beste samen: cynisch, rebels en met een flinke knipoog, zonder dat de intensiteit verloren gaat. Ook Guillotines en Nail + Burn laten horen dat Shewolff vooral vertrouwt op directheid. Geen onnodige omwegen, maar nummers die hun punt maken en weer verdwijnen voordat ze hun kracht verliezen.
De productie sluit daar naadloos op aan. Alles klinkt rauw, levendig en ongepolijst. Je hoort de randen schuren en juist dat geeft de muziek haar geloofwaardigheid. Een glanzende studioproductie had deze nummers waarschijnlijk eerder afgezwakt dan versterkt. Hier voelt het alsof de band live in dezelfde ruimte staat te spelen, met alle charme en imperfecties die daarbij horen.
Toch is niet alles even memorabel. Juist doordat vrijwel alle nummers dezelfde compromisloze aanpak volgen, vervagen sommige riffs na verloop van tijd enigszins in elkaar. De energie blijft hoog, maar af en toe had een onverwachte wending of een sterker uitgewerkte melodie de plaat net wat meer onderscheid gegeven. Dat neemt niet weg dat verveling nauwelijks een kans krijgt; de korte speelduur voorkomt dat de formule gaat slijten.
Wat uiteindelijk het meeste overtuigt, is de eerlijkheid waarmee Shewolff zijn muziek brengt. Er wordt nergens geprobeerd om moderner, technischer of extremer te klinken dan nodig is. De band doet precies waar hij zin in heeft en straalt daarbij een aanstekelijk enthousiasme uit dat moeilijk te negeren valt.
We’re All Gonna Fukkin’ Die is misschien geen release die het genre opnieuw uitvindt, maar dat lijkt ook nooit de bedoeling te zijn geweest. Dit is een vuile, oprechte en energieke uitbarsting van blackened punk en rock-’n-roll die vooral draait om attitude, spontaniteit en plezier. Liefhebbers van primitieve, compromisloze undergroundmetal zullen hier ongetwijfeld hun hart aan ophalen.
