The stone walls drip with moisture, the torches have long since burned out, and somewhere in the depths echoes the sound of a ritual that was never brought to an end. More than twenty years after their original release, Goatvomit’s earliest recordings are resurrected through Demo / EP, a compilation bringing together the band’s self-titled 2000 demo and the subsequent Chapel of the Winds of Belial EP. What crawls forth from these catacombs sounds just as rotten, malicious, and uncompromising as it did back then.
Goatvomit belongs to that category of bands that never cared about innovation or technical refinement. Their strength lies in the unfiltered primitive assault that defines these twelve tracks. From the very first moments, the listener is submerged in a filthy maelstrom of frantic riffs, chaotic drumming, and demonic vocals that sound more like invocations than conventional singing. The production is rough and grainy, but that is precisely what preserves the authenticity of the material. Everything reeks of damp rehearsal rooms, worn-out cassette tapes, and an underground scene that still existed far beyond the reach of trends and social media.
The tracks originating from the demo possess an almost uncontrollable aggression. Songs such as “Goat of Death” and “Carnal Blasphemy” charge forward without concern for subtlety or nuance. The riffs carve their way through the mix while the rhythm section pursues like a deranged war machine. On the material taken from Chapel of the Winds of Belial, the band sounds slightly more focused without sacrificing any of its savage character. The compositions continue to exude the same suffocating atmosphere of blasphemy, death, and total destruction.
What impresses most is how genuine this music feels. While countless bands today attempt to recreate the aesthetics of old-school bestial black/death metal, these recordings radiate a natural sense of extremity. Nothing feels calculated or nostalgic. Goatvomit was not playing this music because a scene demanded it; they were doing it because it was evidently the most direct way to channel their vision. That is precisely why Demo / EP still sounds relevant today.
Of course, this compilation demands something from the listener. The primitive production and uncompromising approach will not appeal to everyone. Those who crave extreme metal in its rawest and most unfiltered form, however, will discover a treasure trove of decay and blasphemy here. Nuclear War Now! once again demonstrates why the label remains such an important force in preserving forgotten underground relics.
Demo / EP is not a nostalgic curiosity, but a reminder of a time when extremity was measured by conviction rather than production values or image. A filthy, dark, and thoroughly enjoyable descent into the deepest recesses of the Greek underground.

De stenen muren druipen van vocht, de fakkels zijn allang gedoofd en ergens in de diepte weerklinkt het geluid van een ritueel dat nooit beëindigd werd. Meer dan twintig jaar na hun oorspronkelijke verschijning worden de eerste opnamen van Goatvomit opnieuw tot leven gewekt op Demo / EP, een compilatie die de zelfgetitelde demo uit 2000 en de daaropvolgende Chapel of the Winds of Belial EP samenbrengt. Wat hier uit de catacomben omhoog kruipt, klinkt nog even verrot, kwaadaardig en compromisloos als destijds.
Goatvomit behoort tot die categorie bands die nooit interesse hebben gehad in vernieuwing of technische verfijning. Hun kracht schuilt juist in de onversneden primitieve aanval die deze twaalf nummers kenmerken. Vanaf de openingsminuten wordt de luisteraar ondergedompeld in een smerige maalstroom van razende riffs, chaotische drumpartijen en demonische vocalen die eerder klinken als bezweringen dan als zang. De productie is ruw en korrelig, maar precies daardoor behoudt het materiaal zijn authenticiteit. Alles ademt de sfeer van vochtige repetitiekelders, versleten cassettebandjes en een underground die nog volledig buiten het bereik van trends en sociale media bestond.
De nummers afkomstig van de demo bezitten een bijna oncontroleerbare agressie. Liederen als “Goat of Death” en “Carnal Blasphemy” stormen vooruit zonder zich druk te maken over subtiliteit of nuance. De riffs hakken zich een weg door het geluid terwijl de ritmesectie als een losgeslagen oorlogsmachine achtervolgt. Op het materiaal van Chapel of the Winds of Belial klinkt de band iets meer gefocust, zonder daarbij iets van haar rauwe karakter te verliezen. De composities ademen nog steeds dezelfde verstikkende sfeer van godslastering, dood en totale vernietiging.
Wat vooral indruk maakt, is hoe oprecht deze muziek aanvoelt. Waar tegenwoordig talloze bands proberen de oude bestial black/death-esthetiek te reproduceren, ademen deze opnamen een natuurlijk soort extremiteit. Niets voelt berekend of nostalgisch. Goatvomit speelde deze muziek niet omdat een scène daarom vroeg, maar omdat dit blijkbaar de meest directe manier was om hun visie vorm te geven. Juist daardoor klinkt Demo / EP vandaag nog steeds relevant.
Natuurlijk vraagt deze compilatie iets van de luisteraar. De primitieve productie en compromisloze aanpak zullen niet iedereen aanspreken. Wie echter verlangt naar extreme metal in haar meest ruwe en ongefilterde vorm, vindt hier een schatkamer vol verrotting en blasfemie. Nuclear War Now! bewijst opnieuw waarom het label zo belangrijk blijft voor het bewaren van vergeten ondergrondse parels.
Demo / EP is geen nostalgische curiositeit, maar een herinnering aan een tijd waarin extremiteit nog werd gemeten aan overtuiging, niet aan productie of imago. Een smerige, duistere en bijzonder vermakelijke afdaling in de diepste krochten van de Griekse underground.
