The Swedish underground remains an inexhaustible source of quality extreme metal. Flykt is a fine example of this. Formed by musicians who have already earned their stripes in other projects, including Rev 16:8, the band made a promising debut with Charnel Heart. On its successor, Sinister Strain, the group builds further upon that foundation with an album full of conviction and craftsmanship, although it does not always achieve the impact it clearly aims for.
From the opening track, “You Will Know Them by the Reek of Defeat,” Flykt drags the listener into a world of struggle, transformation, and spiritual trials. The band combines aggressive riffs, melodic guitar work, and a constant sense of underlying menace. The production is powerful without sounding sterile, allowing the compositions plenty of room to unfold.
The strongest material is found in the first half of the album. “Transcendent Rebellion” and “An Uncarved Block” showcase a band that knows exactly how to build tension. The melodies are captivating without becoming sentimental, and the riffs linger long after the songs have ended. “Rebirth in the Name of Reprisal” is another highlight, thanks to its convincing blend of aggression and atmosphere.
For the drum tracks, Flykt enlisted David Ekevärn, who provides the material with a solid and energetic backbone. His performance is powerful and controlled, never seeking to overshadow the songs with technical showmanship. The focus remains firmly on strengthening the compositions.
Where Sinister Strain falls slightly short is in its ability to truly surprise. The quality of the songwriting is never in question, but as the album progresses, a certain predictability begins to emerge. Many of the ideas are well executed, yet few feel exceptional. As a result, the album settles comfortably in the realm of being very good rather than genuinely outstanding.
A greater variety of tempos and moods could also have added more depth to the record. The songs are consistently strong, but at times they flow into one another a little too easily, causing some tracks to lose their individual identity.That said, this is far from a disappointment. Flykt once again proves itself to be a band with a clear vision, a strong sense of melody, and enough experience to craft compelling songs. Sinister Strain is an album that reveals more with repeated listens, yet it lacks that final spark needed to elevate it into the ranks of the year’s truly essential releases.
A strong sophomore effort that further solidifies Flykt’s reputation, while also suggesting there is still room for the band to take the next step.

De Zweedse underground blijft een onuitputtelijke bron van kwaliteitsvolle extreme metal. Flykt is daarvan een goed voorbeeld. De band werd gevormd door muzikanten die hun sporen reeds verdienden in andere projecten, waaronder Rev 16:8, en bracht met Charnel Heart een veelbelovend debuut uit. Op opvolger Sinister Strain bouwt het gezelschap verder op die fundamenten, met een album dat bol staat van overtuiging en vakmanschap, maar niet altijd de impact bereikt waar het duidelijk naar streeft.
Vanaf “You Will Know Them by the Reek of Defeat” trekt Flykt de luisteraar mee in een wereld van strijd, transformatie en spirituele beproevingen. De band kiest voor een combinatie van agressieve riffs, melodieuze gitaarlijnen en een constante onderhuidse dreiging. De productie is krachtig zonder steriel te klinken en geeft de composities voldoende ruimte om zich te ontvouwen.
De sterkste nummers bevinden zich in het eerste deel van het album. “Transcendent Rebellion” en “An Uncarved Block” tonen een band die precies weet hoe spanning opgebouwd moet worden. De melodieën zijn meeslepend zonder sentimenteel te worden en de riffs blijven lang nazinderen. Voor de drumtracks deed Flykt een beroep op David Ekevärn, die het materiaal voorziet van een solide en energieke basis. Zijn spel klinkt krachtig en gecontroleerd, al wordt nergens de behoefte gevoeld om technische hoogstandjes boven de songs te plaatsen. De nadruk ligt duidelijk op het versterken van de composities.
Waar Sinister Strain echter wat punten laat liggen, is in zijn vermogen om echt te verrassen. De kwaliteit van de songwriting staat buiten kijf, maar naarmate het album vordert, sluipt er een zekere voorspelbaarheid in het geheel. Veel ideeën zijn sterk uitgewerkt, maar zelden uitzonderlijk. Hierdoor blijft de plaat hangen op het niveau van een degelijk tot zeer goed album, zonder dat er veel momenten zijn die onmiddellijk klassiek aanvoelen.
Ook had wat meer variatie in tempo en sfeer het album extra diepgang kunnen geven. De nummers zijn consistent sterk, maar vloeien soms iets te vanzelfsprekend in elkaar over. Daardoor vervaagt het onderscheid tussen enkele composities meer dan wenselijk is.Toch is dit allerminst een teleurstelling. Flykt toont zich opnieuw een band met een duidelijke visie, een uitstekend gevoel voor melodie en voldoende ervaring om sterke songs af te leveren. Sinister Strain is een album dat groeit naarmate het vaker wordt beluisterd, maar tegelijkertijd net dat beetje karakter mist om zich definitief tussen de absolute hoogtepunten van het jaar te nestelen.
Een sterke tweede plaat die de reputatie van Flykt verder verstevigt, maar ook laat horen dat er nog ruimte is om de volgende stap te zetten.
