Review: Iskald – Curse of the Mind

English:

Eight years is a long time in a genre where some bands release albums faster than you can properly listen to them. In Iskald’s case, however, the silence following Innhøstinga from 2018 was clearly not a sign that the fire had gone out. The band from the far north of Norway now returns with Curse of the Mind, their sixth full-length album, and immediately takes a slightly different approach. Iskald has always known how to combine melody, aggression and atmosphere, but this time everything is placed within a much clearer conceptual framework.

Curse of the Mind is built as a journey through the darker corners of the human mind. Helheim is not used so much as a literal setting, but rather as a metaphor for mental darkness, madness, hope and ultimately sacrifice. Four longer compositions are connected by short Invocations, making the album feel more like one continuous work than a collection of separate tracks.

Musically, it quickly becomes clear that Iskald has little interest in simply copying the past. The foundation is still unmistakably melodic Black Metal, but the band adds enough Thrash and Death Metal influences to give the whole thing more weight and dynamics. The guitars are sharp in the mix, the drums sound powerful and tight, and the melodies are given plenty of space without the album slipping into unnecessary bombast.

The short Invocations create moments of rest and help connect the songs thematically, although not everyone will find them equally essential. It is mainly within the longer compositions that Iskald shows its real strength. Manifestation of Madness carries a nervous, almost restless atmosphere, while A Burden of Hope, at over eight minutes, takes more time to build tension. Here it becomes clear that the band is not afraid to slow things down and allow melodies to linger for longer.

The real centrepiece, however, is The Sacrifice. At over ten minutes, it is not only the longest track on the album, but also the logical conclusion to the story. Iskald brings together several sides of its sound here: melodic guitar lines, aggressive passages and longer atmospheric sections that give the track enough room to breathe. Despite its length, the song largely holds together and never feels as if it has been artificially stretched simply to cross the ten-minute mark.

The production is quite clear and modern, perhaps even slightly too clean for those who prefer their Norwegian Black Metal buried beneath a layer of ice and dirt. Even so, the sound never becomes sterile. The guitars retain enough bite, and the drums carry enough weight to make the heavier passages hit properly.

Curse of the Mind is therefore not an album that tries to return to the 1990s, but rather one that shows where Iskald stands in 2026. Melodic, tight and technically well executed, yet still dark enough to avoid becoming generic Extreme Metal. After eight years of absence, the band sounds above all as if there are still plenty of ideas left, and that makes this return well worth hearing.

Nederlands:
