Review: Krallice – Scour Order

English:

Krallice was formed in New York in 2007 and has since developed into one of the most distinctive names within American Black Metal. With Scour Order, the band now presents its sixteenth full-length album. The record was written for a performance at Roadburn 2026 and was released later that year through Profound Lore Records. That origin is clearly reflected in its structure: long compositions, a strong sense of cohesion and very little room for straightforward songwriting.

The foundation of Krallice remains Black Metal, but for years the band has incorporated progressive, avant-garde and highly technical elements into its sound. Scour Order is no exception. There is constantly a lot happening at once. Guitars move past each other in different layers, rhythms shift regularly and the drums rarely follow the most obvious path.

Still, this is not an album that exists only to impress on a technical level. Of course, an absurd amount is happening at any given moment, and at times it almost feels as if all four musicians are moving in different directions. Somehow, however, everything still comes together. That may well be one of the band’s greatest strengths: creating chaos without ever truly losing control.

Agonal Shining immediately sets the tone. It is not an easy entry point, but a composition in which you first have to find your bearings. Things hardly become more accessible after that. Kill the Guardian and Unceasing Path keep shifting, changing and expanding, while the guitar parts wind around each other in increasingly complex patterns. At times sharp and aggressive, at others strangely floating and distant.

That is also why Scour Order is not an album you simply put on in the background. There is far too much going on for that. Anyone looking for an obvious chorus after three minutes will probably be better off elsewhere. Krallice expects the listener to follow their own internal logic, however impenetrable that logic may sometimes seem.

The second half of the album becomes even larger in scope. Her Green Arms builds tension without rushing, while the closing title track takes more than thirteen minutes to bring everything together. Technical guitar work, hectic rhythms, longer atmospheric passages and that typical Krallice atmosphere in which beauty and discomfort constantly exist side by side all meet here.

The production plays an important role in making this work. Everything is clear enough to follow the different layers, yet fortunately never so clinical that the album loses its character. The drums in particular retain a remarkably natural sound, despite how complex the playing often is.

Scour Order is not an easy album, nor does it ever pretend to be one. It demands effort from the listener and will probably require several spins before everything starts to fall into place. At times it is impressive, at times exhausting, and every now and then you may find yourself wondering what exactly you are listening to.

But that is also part of its appeal.

Krallice does not make music designed to remain comfortably in the background. Scour Order pulls you into its own world for over an hour and leaves it up to you whether you want to keep following.

Nederlands:
