Where the mysterious Dutch outfit Nachtheem was once accused of being little more than a copy of Vermod, the individuals behind this project seem to have left such comparisons firmly in the past. With their debut full-length album Waan van de Leegte, released through the renowned Norwegian label Terratur Possessions, Nachtheem takes an important next step in its evolution.
Following the much-discussed Nacht Zij met Ons… demo from 2024 and two split releases with Wirdha and Moft respectively, the time has finally come for a full-length statement. An album that immediately makes it clear that Nachtheem is no longer operating in the shadow of other bands, but is instead carving out its own path with confidence.
Perhaps that is somewhat un-Dutch, as the Dutch Black Metal scene has developed an increasingly recognizable identity of its own in recent years, while Nachtheem appears intent on following a different course altogether.
Musically, the band also resists easy categorization. According to the sparse accompanying press sheet, Waan van de Leegte should not be viewed as Black Metal, but rather as “Dark Metal.” A term that often feels little more than a marketing label, yet in this case it may actually capture the essence of the music more accurately: dark, suffocating, and melancholic, without fully adhering to the traditional conventions of the genre.
From the very first notes, it becomes clear that atmosphere and a sense of oppression are central to Nachtheem’s vision. The music breathes feelings of emptiness, decay, and existential unease, perfectly reflecting both the album’s title and the aura of mystery that has surrounded the collective since its inception.
From powerful atmospheric Black Metal to subdued folk passages, Waan van de Leegte offers a welcome degree of variety, something that is often lacking within the genre. However, all of these elements are condensed into a running time of barely forty minutes, making the album feel as though it ends before it has fully exhausted its potential. An additional track certainly would not have hurt. During my research, I also noticed that the relatively short playing time is frequently cited by fellow reviewers as one of the album’s few shortcomings. Despite the strength of the songwriting and the consistency of the material, the record leaves the listener with the feeling that there could have been even more to explore.
That minor criticism should not overshadow the overall achievement, however. Waan van de Leegte stands as a remarkably strong debut album that succeeds on nearly every level. The record boasts a wonderfully dark production, compelling compositions, and an atmosphere that remains captivating from beginning to end. Nachtheem skillfully combines melancholy, mysticism, and menace without sacrificing intensity or authenticity. The brief runtime remains the only truly notable criticism of an otherwise impressive first full-length effort.
What remains is an album that not only lives up to expectations but exceeds them on several occasions. With Waan van de Leegte, Nachtheem proves that it is far more than just another promising name within the Dutch underground. The band has delivered a debut that leaves listeners eager to discover what the future holds. With strong songwriting, a suffocating atmosphere, and a production that perfectly complements the band’s artistic vision, Waan van de Leegte has all the ingredients necessary to linger in the darkest corners of the underground for years to come.

Waar het mysterieuze Nederlandse Nachtheem in het verleden nog wel eens werd beticht van het zijn van een kopie van Vermod, lijken de personen achter dit project die vergelijkingen inmiddels definitief achter zich te hebben gelaten. Met hun debuutalbum Waan van de Leegte, verschenen via het gerenommeerde Noorse label Terratur Possessions, zet Nachtheem een belangrijke volgende stap in zijn ontwikkeling.
Na de veelbesproken demo Nacht Zij met Ons… uit 2024 en twee splitreleases, respectievelijk met Wirdha en Moft, is het nu tijd voor een volwaardig debuut. Een debuut dat direct duidelijk maakt dat Nachtheem niet langer in de schaduw van andere bands opereert, maar vastberaden een eigen pad bewandelt.
Misschien zelfs enigszins on-Nederlands, want waar de Nederlandse Black Metal-scene de afgelopen jaren steeds meer een herkenbaar eigen geluid heeft ontwikkeld, lijkt Nachtheem bewust een andere koers te varen. Ook muzikaal laat de band zich niet gemakkelijk in een hokje plaatsen. Volgens het sobere begeleidende informatieblad moet Waan van de Leegte niet worden beschouwd als Black Metal, maar als “Dark Metal”. Een term die vaak weinig meer is dan een marketinglabel, maar die in dit geval wellicht beter de sfeer van de muziek weet te vatten: duister, verstikkend en melancholisch, zonder zich volledig te conformeren aan de traditionele kenmerken van het genre.
Vanaf de eerste tonen wordt duidelijk dat Nachtheem vooral inzet op atmosfeer en beklemming. De muziek ademt een gevoel van leegte, verval en existentiële onrust, passend bij zowel de albumtitel als de mysterieuze uitstraling die het collectief sinds zijn ontstaan omringt.
Van krachtige, atmosferische Black Metal tot ingetogen folkpassages biedt Waan van de Leegte de nodige afwisseling, iets wat binnen het genre vaak ontbreekt. Al deze elementen zijn samengeperst in amper veertig minuten speeltijd, waardoor het album voorbij lijkt te zijn voordat het zijn volledige potentieel heeft kunnen ontvouwen. Een extra nummer was dan ook geen overbodige luxe geweest. Tijdens mijn research viel bovendien op dat de relatief korte speelduur door meerdere collega’s en recensenten als een van de weinige kritiekpunten wordt genoemd. Ondanks de sterke composities en de consistente kwaliteit laat Waan van de Leegte de luisteraar achter met het gevoel dat er nog meer in had gezeten.
Dit mag de pret natuurlijk niet drukken en ik kan dan ook volmondig stellen dat Waan van de Leegte een uitstekend debuutalbum is geworden. De plaat weet te overtuigen met een heerlijk duistere productie, sterke composities en een sfeer die van begin tot eind beklijft. Nachtheem slaagt erin om melancholie, mystiek en dreiging op natuurlijke wijze samen te brengen zonder daarbij aan kracht in te boeten. Ondanks de wat korte speelduur blijft er dan ook weinig reden tot klagen over. Wat rest is een bijzonder geslaagd debuut dat nieuwsgierig maakt naar wat de toekomst voor Nachtheem nog in petto heeft. Want zeg nu zelf: met sterke nummers, een beklemmende atmosfeer en een productie die perfect aansluit bij de muziek, wat wil een mens nog meer?
