Review: Skandalum – Odium Deificatum

English:

The Belgian underground remains fertile ground for bands that have little interest in musical innovation and prefer to return to the foundations of the genre. Skandalum is one such outfit, showing no particular desire to indulge in complicated arrangements or unnecessary musical tricks. With Odium Deificatum, the trio presents an EP built around rawness, aggression and a healthy dose of uncompromising black metal. Nothing revolutionary, just three musicians who clearly know which direction they want to take.

Skandalum consists of PR on drums, BLHF on guitar and NXDC, who handles both bass and vocals. The EP contains six tracks, with the opener I and closing piece O serving as the intro and outro. Between them are four full compositions in which the band unleashes its musical ideas.

BLHF’s guitar work is fairly traditional in nature. The riffs are firmly rooted in classic black metal and have no need for complicated technical exercises. They are direct, effective and perfectly suited to the raw character of the music. What also stands out is the surprisingly solid production. Despite the unpolished sound, the individual instruments remain clearly audible, and the overall sound retains plenty of bite. A wise decision, because poor production does not automatically make music more authentic or sinister.

An important role is reserved for NXDC’s vocals. His delivery is downright aggressive, consisting of harsh, tearing shrieks that sometimes resemble a lamb being slaughtered. Subtlety is nowhere to be found, but that is hardly the intention here. His vocals give the music a particularly vicious edge and add another layer of intensity to compositions that are already quite ferocious.

PR’s drumming also deserves attention. His playing is tight and convincing, with enough variation to keep the rhythms interesting throughout. The interplay between drums and guitar provides a solid foundation, without making things unnecessarily complicated. Skandalum understands that a well-executed riff and a convincing rhythm can sometimes leave a much stronger impression than an endless display of technical acrobatics.

Still, it cannot be denied that the four compositions share quite a few similarities. The band sticks to a recognisable formula and rarely ventures beyond it. As a result, the individual tracks do not always stand out as much as they could. This is certainly not an insurmountable problem for an EP like this, but a little more variation in the songwriting would undoubtedly benefit a future release. The potential is clearly there.

With Odium Deificatum, Skandalum demonstrates that traditional black metal still has plenty to offer when performed with genuine conviction. The combination of effective riffs, tight drumming, exceptionally aggressive vocals and a production that preserves the necessary rawness makes this a more than worthwhile introduction. There is still room for the band to develop its compositions further, but the foundations are firmly in place. A promising underground release that leaves me curious to hear what this Belgian trio will come up with next.

Nederlands:
