There is something strangely hypnotic about being carried by a current without knowing where it will take you. Afloat the Nocturnal Current evokes exactly that feeling. The surroundings slowly disappear, the last traces of light are swallowed, and what remains is movement through a landscape that seems increasingly detached from the world around it.
Blótskål may be a relatively new name, but the people behind it are certainly no newcomers. The project brings together M. Walraven, also known as Swerc of Nortfalke, who handles all instruments, and The Specter on vocals. Both have a considerable history within the Dutch underground, with names such as Salacious Gods, Uuntar, Gheestenland, Lugubre, Old Tower, Blood Tyrant and Bad Omen among their past and present activities. That experience is clearly audible. This does not sound like a project still searching for its direction; Afloat the Nocturnal Current feels remarkably confident for a debut.
The foundation is traditional black metal: raw, cold and deliberately stripped of unnecessary embellishment. Yet Blótskål does not rely on aggression alone. Melody plays an important role, regularly emerging between the harsher riffs before disappearing back into the mist. Some passages carry an archaic quality and cautiously touch upon folkloric atmospheres without ever moving towards folk metal. Instead, those melodies feel as if they are rising directly from the landscape itself.
That landscape plays an important role throughout the release. Titles such as Deep Fog, the Forestry Claws and Striding the Spiritual Hills are more than fitting decorations; they accurately describe what the music evokes. Nature is not presented as a romantic refuge, but as something vast, indifferent and occasionally threatening. Forests close in, fog obscures the path, and the night seems to stretch far beyond the songs themselves.
The title track perhaps demonstrates most clearly where Blótskål’s strength lies. The music remains in constant motion without continuously choosing outright attack, creating the impression of being pulled forward by something unseen. Towering Nebula Burst expands that sensation even further, while the short closing piece I Rest upon This Pyre hardly feels like a conventional ending. Instead, it resembles the final remnants of the journey slowly disappearing into darkness.
The production complements this approach well. Nothing has been polished excessively, and the rough edges have deliberately been left intact. At the same time, the instruments are given enough space for the melodies in particular to come through clearly. The Specter’s vocals sit naturally within the whole rather than being placed prominently above the music. This creates a certain distance, as though the sound is reaching you from somewhere deep within the same landscape it describes.
At just over half an hour, Afloat the Nocturnal Current is substantial enough to feel like more than a brief introduction, yet compact enough to leave the impression that there is still much left unexplored. Blótskål does not reinvent traditional black metal, nor does the duo seem particularly interested in doing so. Instead, familiar foundations are used to create a world of nocturnal isolation, spirituality and untamed nature.
A convincing first manifestation from a project that already seems to have found the current it intends to follow.

Er schuilt iets merkwaardig hypnotiserends in het meegevoerd worden door een stroming zonder te weten waar die je naartoe brengt. Afloat the Nocturnal Current roept precies dat gevoel op. De omgeving verdwijnt langzaam, de laatste restanten licht worden opgeslokt en wat overblijft is een beweging door een landschap dat steeds verder los lijkt te raken van de wereld eromheen.
Blótskål mag dan een relatief nieuwe naam zijn, de mensen erachter zijn bepaald geen nieuwkomers. Het project brengt M. Walraven, ook bekend als Swerc van Nortfalke, die alle instrumenten voor zijn rekening neemt, samen met The Specter op zang. Beiden hebben een behoorlijke geschiedenis binnen de Nederlandse underground, met onder meer Salacious Gods, Uuntar, Gheestenland, Lugubre, Old Tower, Blood Tyrant en Bad Omen op hun palmares. Die ervaring is duidelijk hoorbaar. Hier klinkt geen project dat nog zoekende is naar een eigen richting; Afloat the Nocturnal Current staat opvallend stevig op zijn benen voor een debuut.
De basis bestaat uit traditionele black metal: rauw, koud en bewust ontdaan van overbodige opsmuk. Toch zoekt Blótskål het niet uitsluitend in agressie. Melodie speelt een belangrijke rol en komt regelmatig tussen de ruwere riffs naar boven om even later weer in de nevel te verdwijnen. Sommige passages hebben daarbij iets archaïsch en raken voorzichtig aan folkloristische sferen, zonder dat de muziek ook maar enig moment richting folk metal schuift. Het voelt eerder alsof die melodieën uit het landschap zelf omhoogkomen.
Dat landschap speelt sowieso een belangrijke rol. Titels als Deep Fog, the Forestry Claws en Striding the Spiritual Hills zijn meer dan passende versieringen; ze omschrijven behoorlijk treffend wat de muziek oproept. De natuur wordt hier niet neergezet als een romantisch toevluchtsoord, maar als iets groots, onverschilligs en soms dreigends. Bossen sluiten zich, mist ontneemt het zicht en de nacht lijkt zich verder uit te strekken dan de nummers zelf.
Het titelnummer laat misschien wel het duidelijkst horen waar de kracht van Blótskål ligt. De muziek beweegt voortdurend zonder continu de aanval te kiezen, waardoor het gevoel ontstaat dat je door iets onzichtbaars vooruit wordt getrokken. Towering Nebula Burst trekt dat idee nog wat verder open, terwijl het korte afsluitende I Rest upon This Pyre nauwelijks als een traditionele afsluiter voelt. Eerder als de laatste resten van de tocht die langzaam in het donker verdwijnen.
Ook de productie sluit daar goed op aan. Niets is gladgestreken en de ruwe randen zijn bewust blijven zitten. Tegelijkertijd krijgen de instrumenten voldoende ruimte om vooral de melodieën goed naar voren te laten komen. De vocalen van The Specter liggen mooi in het geheel en worden nergens boven de muziek geplaatst. Daardoor ontstaat een zekere afstand, alsof de muziek ergens vanuit de diepte van datzelfde landschap naar je toe komt.
Met iets meer dan een half uur speeltijd is Afloat the Nocturnal Current lang genoeg om meer te zijn dan slechts een korte kennismaking, maar compact genoeg om je met het gevoel achter te laten dat nog lang niet alles verteld is. Blótskål vindt traditionele black metal niet opnieuw uit en lijkt daar ook helemaal geen behoefte aan te hebben. In plaats daarvan gebruikt het duo vertrouwde fundamenten om een eigen wereld van nachtelijke afzondering, spiritualiteit en onherbergzame natuur neer te zetten.
Een overtuigende eerste manifestatie van een project dat zijn stroming duidelijk al gevonden heeft.
