Review: Røkkr – Sindets Skygger Hvisker

English:

Releasing two albums in a single year and presenting them as the opening chapters of a trilogy inevitably creates expectations. With Den Ufortalte Saga and Mørkdrøm, Røkkr laid the foundations in 2024, but only now, two years later, is the story finally brought to a close. Sindets Skygger Hvisker forms the third and final part, and at the same time it sounds as if the Danes have a clearer idea than ever of what Røkkr should be.

The roots are still firmly planted in the black metal of the nineties. Abigor and early Ulver are obvious points of reference, and that combination provides a fairly accurate first impression. The unpredictable and almost nervous character of Abigor stands opposite the more atmospheric and melodic side of Bergtatt. But anyone thinking that this is enough to summarise Røkkr will soon discover otherwise. There is simply too much happening on Sindets Skygger Hvisker.

The five lengthy compositions are constantly in motion. Slower sections alternate with mid-tempo passages and sudden accelerations where tremolo riffs and blast beats take over. In between, melodic guitar lines, clean passages, occasional clean vocals, synths and deeper voices emerge. What makes this work is that it rarely feels as though Røkkr is desperately trying to demonstrate how many ideas can be squeezed into a single track. The compositions are given enough room to take their strange and unexpected turns.

This gives Sindets Skygger Hvisker a somewhat contradictory character. On the one hand, it is easy to surrender yourself to its dreamy and occasionally almost ethereal atmosphere. On the other, the album demands attention. Beneath that first layer something is constantly happening: a bass line separating itself from the guitars, an unexpected rhythmic shift or a melody appearing briefly before disappearing again. It is music you can easily lose yourself in, yet its true character only reveals itself when you listen closely.

The production helps considerably. Compared to the earlier material, everything feels clearer and more sharply defined without stripping away the roughness. The bass guitar in particular benefits from this. It sits remarkably prominently in the mix and regularly becomes much more than simply the foundation beneath the guitars. It adds movement to the music and ensures that new details continue to emerge with repeated listens.

That does not mean all five compositions are equally convincing. Dunkle Tårne af Is and Mørkdrøm stretch certain ideas considerably, and there are moments where their hypnotic quality threatens to slip into monotony. It is a thin line in music that relies so heavily on repetition and atmosphere. When Den Kvælende Frost arrives afterwards, the contrast becomes obvious and the underlying tension immediately returns.

The closing Slette Lig Marken Gøder is one of the album’s strongest moments. Here the different faces of Røkkr come together most convincingly. The atmosphere remains intact but gains a darker and more aggressive undercurrent, with traces of Mayhem and Emperor seemingly haunting the composition without Røkkr losing its own identity.

The title track also deserves particular attention. Sindets Skygger Hvisker had already appeared on the 2025 split Buried by Ice and Snow alongside Drengskapur and Gennem Tågen. In that sense, part of this final chapter already existed before the trilogy itself was completed.

With Sindets Skygger Hvisker, Røkkr ultimately delivers not its most immediate album, but perhaps its most complete one. The clearer production almost seems at odds with the increasingly unpredictable compositions: it becomes easier to hear what is happening, while what is actually happening becomes increasingly difficult to predict.

As the conclusion to the trilogy, that feels appropriate. Røkkr does not simply return to where Den Ufortalte Saga began, but shows how much the band has changed along the way. Still rooted in the nineties, still cold and atmospheric, but by now distinctive enough to regularly abandon the safer paths.

The shadows may whisper, but you need to listen closely to hear what they have to say.

Nederlands:
