A split works best when the two bands have something in common while still retaining enough of their own identity. That seems to be exactly the idea behind Curse of the Emerald Knight, the new collaboration between Belgian bands Bloedmaan and Crypts of Dusk. Both bands look back to the black metal of the 1990s, but approach it from a different angle.
Bloedmaan opens the split with four tracks. Rönarg, the man behind the project, has developed a recognisable sound built around melodic black metal, raw guitars and vampiric themes. Those familiar with his earlier work will have a good idea of what to expect, but that doesn’t mean Bloedmaan sounds like it’s simply going through the motions here.
This is already clear from “Haunting Call of the Waning Moon”. The song has the typical nocturnal atmosphere that fits Bloedmaan so well, while still offering enough movement. The melodies are given room to breathe and are alternated with furious passages and the characteristic shrieking vocals. As a result, the track doesn’t feel like a simple repetition of old ideas. There is still plenty of life in the material.
The decision to pair Bloedmaan with Crypts of Dusk is interesting as well. While Bloedmaan mainly approaches the second wave through its melodic and vampiric side, Crypts of Dusk take a more theatrical and symphonic approach. Their five tracks therefore fit the overall atmosphere while giving the second half of the split a different character.
Crypts of Dusk take the listener into a world of necromancers, abandoned landscapes and ancient stories. The band places more emphasis on melody and atmosphere without losing sight of the foundations of black metal. This makes them a fitting second half of the release rather than simply offering more of the same.
The strength of Curse of the Emerald Knight lies mainly in that difference. Bloedmaan sounds like Bloedmaan and Crypts of Dusk sound like Crypts of Dusk. Yet the two worlds fit together. Their shared love for the second wave of black metal is obvious, but both bands put their own spin on it.
Curse of the Emerald Knight is not a split that tries to reinvent black metal. And it doesn’t need to. Its charm lies in taking a style that is now decades old and still finding something to do with it. For fans of melodic, atmospheric black metal with a clear love for the 1990s, this is a release worth keeping an eye on.

Een split is op zijn best wanneer de twee bands iets met elkaar gemeen hebben, maar tegelijkertijd genoeg eigen gezicht behouden. Dat lijkt precies het uitgangspunt te zijn van Curse of the Emerald Knight, de nieuwe samenwerking tussen het Belgische Bloedmaan en het duo Crypts of Dusk. Beide bands grijpen terug naar de black metal van de jaren negentig, maar doen dat vanuit een andere hoek.
Bloedmaan opent de split met vier nummers. Rönarg, de man achter het project, heeft inmiddels een herkenbaar geluid opgebouwd waarin melodische black metal, rauwe gitaren en vampirische thema’s samenkomen. Wie bekend is met het eerdere werk weet ongeveer wat hij kan verwachten, maar dat betekent niet dat Bloedmaan hier op de automatische piloot klinkt.
Dat blijkt al uit “Haunting Call of the Waning Moon”. De song heeft die typische nachtelijke sfeer die zo goed bij Bloedmaan past, maar blijft muzikaal voldoende bewegen. De melodieën krijgen de ruimte en worden afgewisseld met felle passages en de kenmerkende krijsende vocalen. Het nummer klinkt daardoor niet als een simpele herhaling van oude ideeën. Er zit nog steeds leven in het materiaal.
Ook de keuze om Bloedmaan tegenover Crypts of Dusk te zetten is interessant. Waar Bloedmaan vooral vanuit de melodische en vampirische kant van de tweede golf opereert, kiest Crypts of Dusk voor een meer theatrale en symfonische benadering. Hun vijf nummers sluiten daardoor qua sfeer aan, maar geven de tweede helft van de split een ander karakter.
Crypts of Dusk neemt de luisteraar mee naar een wereld van necromancers, verlaten landschappen en oude verhalen. De band legt meer nadruk op melodie en sfeer, zonder de basis van de black metal uit het oog te verliezen. Daarmee vormt de band een logisch tweede deel van de release, in plaats van simpelweg nog eens dezelfde muziek aan te bieden.
De kracht van Curse of the Emerald Knight zit dan ook vooral in dat verschil. Bloedmaan klinkt als Bloedmaan en Crypts of Dusk als Crypts of Dusk. Toch passen de twee werelden bij elkaar. De gedeelde liefde voor de tweede golf van de black metal is duidelijk aanwezig, maar beide bands geven daar hun eigen draai aan.
Met Curse of the Emerald Knight krijgen we geen split die probeert de black metal opnieuw uit te vinden. Dat hoeft ook helemaal niet. De charme zit juist in het teruggrijpen naar een stijl die inmiddels decennia oud is en daar nog steeds iets mee kunnen doen. Voor liefhebbers van melodische, sfeervolle black metal met een duidelijke voorliefde voor de jaren negentig is dit dan ook een release om in de gaten te houden.
