A cold wind blows across a devastated landscape, carrying with it the dust of collapsed walls and nameless graves. There is nothing left worth fighting for, yet in the distance the last army continues its relentless march. Scarlet Graves Amidst the Ashen Ruins brings together the American Ablazen Winds and the anonymous Belarusian project Niaisny on a split devoted entirely to war, death, desolation and decay.
The cassette was released on September 8, 2026, through Blud Auk Tapes and contains three tracks from each band. Ablazen Winds fills the first side with almost fifteen minutes of martial black metal. On the second side, Niaisny receives nearly nineteen minutes to create a colder and more melancholic landscape. Both projects follow a different path, but ultimately end up among the same smouldering ruins.
Ablazen Winds was formed in 2023 and consists of Necklace of Shadow on vocals and guitars and Incubare behind the drums. The musicians are also active in projects including Collier d’Ombre, Azelisassath, Garmsblod and Ichors Glaive. Following the Burning Scripture of War demo and the Kingsblood EP, released earlier this year, the duo delivers three new tracks here.
Attrition Phalanx opens without wasting any time. The guitars form a sparse, blazing wall of sound, while the drums drive the music forward like a battered but stubbornly advancing column. The strength of Ablazen Winds lies not in technical excess, but in repetition, rhythm and constant tension. Harrowing Gusts Through the Black Mountains sounds every bit as inhospitable as its title suggests. The track evokes images of black mountain peaks, with icy gusts sweeping away everything still left standing.
Ablazen Winds closes its side with Chevauchée. The title refers to the devastating mounted raids of the medieval period, and the music possesses the same sense of a merciless attack. Influences from Eastern European black metal, particularly Hate Forest and Astrofaes, clearly rise to the surface. Nevertheless, the approach remains austere and direct enough to avoid sounding like a simple imitation.
Niaisny then takes over, noticeably changing the character of the split. Where Ablazen Winds marches through the landscape, Niaisny remains behind among the dead. Almost nothing is known about the line-up of this Belarusian project. That anonymity suits the music perfectly: grey, distant and seemingly emerging from a world in which human beings are merely temporary shadows.
Pachavalny viecier, or ‘Funeral Wind’, opens the second side with a more expansive and melodic approach. The riffs are given more time to develop, while a clear sense of melancholy lies beneath the raw exterior. Biazdonny chram — ‘Bottomless Temple’ — subsequently pulls the listener deeper into an abandoned, almost spiritual darkness. The tempo does not need to remain constantly high to retain its sense of menace; it is precisely the repetition and restrained melodies that give this side its strength.
U samocie nočy, ‘In the Solitude of Night’, provides a fitting conclusion. The turmoil of battle from the first side has disappeared. What remains is silence, darkness and the realisation that nobody has survived the destruction. Niaisny sounds unmistakably Eastern European, with echoes of Walknut, Ygg and Hate Forest, yet possesses a distinct feeling for sombre melodies and desolate atmosphere.
The strength of Scarlet Graves Amidst the Ashen Ruins lies precisely in the contrast between its two sides. Ablazen Winds depicts the battle and destruction, while Niaisny appears to describe what remains afterwards. The Americans provide the fire; the Belarusians provide the ashes. As a result, this split does not feel like two randomly combined recordings, but like a single story with a clear beginning and ending.
With a total running time of just over 33 minutes, both projects receive sufficient space without allowing the release to become unnecessarily long. Scarlet Graves Amidst the Ashen Ruins is a strong meeting between martial aggression and Eastern European melancholy. Two different winds blow across the same devastated landscape, ultimately leaving behind nothing but cold, scarlet graves.

Nederlands:
Harrowing Gusts Through the Black Mountains klinkt al even onherbergzaam als de titel doet vermoeden.
