Like a sculptor who spends years chiseling away layer after layer of stone until only the essence remains, Marax’s evolution feels exactly the same. Where earlier releases still embraced symphonic embellishments and theatrical flourishes, Necroblood leaves behind little more than an icy, stripped-down backbone. Not because the band has become less ambitious, but because it now seems to know exactly what it wants to express.
The Slovenian trio has now been active for nearly a decade, maintaining an impressive pace throughout that time. Demos, EPs, live recordings, and two full-length albums have each marked another step in a gradual evolution that steadily discarded unnecessary ornamentation. Necroblood therefore doesn’t feel like a stopgap release, but rather the natural continuation of that journey.
After the brief ritualistic intro, Initiation erupts with razor-sharp riffs and relentless blast beats. From that moment on, Marax leaves little room to catch your breath. Morgoth drives the songs forward with commanding drum work, while Nord Slayer unleashes one piercing riff after another. The keyboards are still present, but only serve to deepen the atmosphere in subtle ways. They never dominate the mix, allowing the guitars to remain firmly at the heart of the sound.
One of Marax’s greatest strengths continues to be Anin Astaroth. Her piercing, possessed vocals give the music a distinctive identity, sounding as though every line is spat out with absolute conviction. Rather than relying on theatrical effects or melodic flourishes, she opts for pure aggression, perfectly complementing the uncompromising nature of the EP.
The songwriting is equally solid. These riffs are not designed to impress through technical complexity, but to build and sustain an atmosphere of constant tension. Acceptation and Purification in particular contain melodic passages that quietly linger in the listener’s mind without sacrificing the raw intensity of the material. The production serves the music well: clear enough for every instrument to breathe, yet rough enough to preserve the sharp edges that this style demands.
That said, Necroblood is not entirely without flaws. The four main compositions largely occupy the same tempo and emotional intensity, causing them to blend together over time. A slower, more oppressive passage or an unexpected shift in dynamics could have strengthened the EP’s overall impact. Likewise, the intro ultimately functions more as an atmospheric prelude than as an essential composition in its own right.
These are, however, relatively minor criticisms of a release that succeeds primarily through its unwavering focus. Marax has no intention of reinventing black metal, nor does it need to. Instead, the band places its faith in strong riffs, convincing vocal performances, and an atmosphere that remains consistently engaging from beginning to end. It is precisely that honesty which makes Necroblood such a rewarding listen.
Necroblood may not be an EP destined to reshape the history of black metal, but it stands as a testament to what a band can achieve after years of refining its identity. Compact, fierce, and stripped of unnecessary excess, Marax demonstrates that simplicity, when executed with conviction, can often be far more powerful than grandeur.

Alsof een beeldhouwer jarenlang laag na laag steen wegbeitelt totdat alleen de essentie overblijft. Zo voelt de ontwikkeling van Marax. Waar eerdere releases nog ruimte boden aan symfonische aankleding en theatrale accenten, blijft op Necroblood vooral de kale, ijskoude ruggengraat overeind. Niet omdat de band minder ambitieus is geworden, maar omdat ze precies lijkt te weten wat ze wil zeggen.
De Sloveense formatie bestaat inmiddels bijna tien jaar en heeft in die periode een indrukwekkend tempo aangehouden. Demo’s, EP’s, live-opnamen en twee volledige albums vormden telkens nieuwe hoofdstukken in een ontwikkeling die steeds verder afrekende met overbodige franje. Necroblood voelt dan ook niet als een tussenrelease om de tijd te overbruggen, maar als een logische volgende stap in die evolutie.
Na de korte, ritualistische intro barst Initiation direct los met snijdende riffs en onverbiddelijke blastbeats. Vanaf dat moment laat Marax nauwelijks nog ruimte om op adem te komen. De muziek wordt voortgestuwd door de krachtige drumpartij van Morgoth, terwijl Nord Slayer riff na riff op de luisteraar afvuurt. De synthesizers zijn nog altijd aanwezig, maar dienen uitsluitend om de sfeer subtiel te verdiepen. Ze domineren nergens het geluid en laten de gitaren volledig hun werk doen.
Een van de sterkste wapens van Marax blijft echter Anin Astaroth. Haar scherpe, bezeten vocalen geven de muziek een eigen gezicht en klinken alsof iedere regel met volledige overtuiging wordt uitgespuwd. Ze zoekt nergens melodieuze uithalen of theatrale effecten op, maar kiest voor pure agressie die naadloos aansluit bij het compromisloze karakter van de EP.
Ook compositorisch zit het goed in elkaar. De riffs zijn niet bedoeld om technisch te imponeren, maar om een constante spanning op te bouwen. Vooral Acceptation en Purification bevatten melodische motieven die zich ongemerkt vastzetten zonder afbreuk te doen aan de rauwe intensiteit. De productie ondersteunt dat uitstekend: helder genoeg om alle instrumenten hun plaats te geven, maar ruw genoeg om de muziek haar scherpe randjes te laten behouden.
Toch is Necroblood niet helemaal vrij van kritiek. De vier hoofdnummers bevinden zich grotendeels in hetzelfde tempo en dezelfde intensiteit, waardoor ze na verloop van tijd enigszins in elkaar overvloeien. Een tragere, beklemmende passage of een onverwachte dynamische wending had de spanningsboog nog verder kunnen vergroten. Ook de intro voelt uiteindelijk meer als een sfeervolle opmaat dan als een essentieel onderdeel van de EP.
Dat zijn echter kanttekeningen bij een release die vooral overtuigt door haar focus. Marax probeert niet het genre opnieuw uit te vinden en heeft daar ook geen behoefte aan. De band vertrouwt volledig op sterke riffs, overtuigende vocalen en een sfeer die consequent wordt vastgehouden van begin tot eind. Juist die eerlijkheid maakt Necroblood tot een geslaagde release.
Necroblood is misschien geen plaat die de geschiedenisboeken zal halen, maar wel een EP die laat horen hoe een band na jaren van verfijning steeds dichter bij haar eigen identiteit komt. Compact, fel en zonder overbodige ballast bewijst Marax dat eenvoud soms veel krachtiger kan zijn dan bombast.
