Whoever is even remotely familiar with the Greek black metal scene knows that its greatest strength has never been speed or technical excess, but atmosphere. It is music that does not so much attack as it slowly takes possession of the listener. Rituals woven into riffs, carried by a dark mysticism that has been the lifeblood of Hellenic black metal since the early nineties. Ceremonial Worship may not be among the scene’s most renowned names, but with Between Sleep and Death they prove that the ancient flame still burns brightly.
Ceremonial Worship was founded in 2016 around guitarist High Priest C.W. After a handful of smaller releases and two full-length albums the band now returns after four years of absence. The result is an album that confidently embraces the band’s Hellenic roots. While earlier material occasionally leaned toward Scandinavian influences, Between Sleep and Death reconnects with the spirit of Greek black metal without falling into the trap of mere nostalgia.
From the haunting opening of The Spiral Echoes it becomes immediately clear what kind of atmosphere the band is aiming for. Rather than relying on excessive bombast, the album unfolds through a slowly building sense of menace. Hate Spells and Towards Nothingness continue this approach with hypnotic riffs, restrained melodies, and a rhythm section that mesmerizes more than it overwhelms. The repetition is entirely deliberate, drawing the listener deeper into a ritual where every riff has its rightful place.
Fans of the classic Hellenic sound will undoubtedly recognize echoes of bands such as Nocternity, Kawir, and Legion of Doom. Yet Ceremonial Worship never feels like a mere imitation. The heroic Greek melodies are fused with a harsher, more abrasive edge that occasionally recalls the Scandinavian second wave, creating a compelling balance between melody, aggression, and occult atmosphere.
The production perfectly complements that vision. Everything sounds organic and raw without descending into murkiness. The guitars retain their warm, earthy character, the drums feel natural and powerful, and piercing vocals reinforce the ritualistic essence of the compositions. Tracks such as Esoteric Struggle and Pantheon of Suffering stand out in particular, gradually building an impressive tension that constantly shifts between menace and melancholy.
That said, Between Sleep and Death is not entirely without flaws. Its strong reliance on repetition and atmosphere means that some compositions are less immediately memorable than they could have been. At times, an unexpected twist or a more pronounced melodic passage would have added welcome variety. As a result, a few songs tend to blend together during longer listening sessions.
Nevertheless, Ceremonial Worship delivers a compelling tribute to the Hellenic black metal tradition. This is not an album concerned with modern trends or technical showmanship. Instead, it embraces atmosphere, ritual, and an unmistakable devotion to the ancient Greek spirit of black metal. For devotees of occult and ritualistic black metal, Between Sleep and Death is a release that confidently earns its place among the strongest Hellenic offerings of recent years.

Wie de Griekse blackmetalscene een beetje kent, weet dat haar grootste kracht nooit in snelheid of technische hoogstandjes heeft gelegen, maar in sfeer. Het is muziek die niet zozeer aanvalt als wel langzaam bezit neemt van de luisteraar. Rituelen verpakt in riffs, gedragen door een duistere mystiek die al sinds de vroege jaren negentig als een rode draad door Hellas loopt. Ceremonial Worship behoort misschien niet tot de bekendste namen uit die traditie, maar bewijst met Between Sleep and Death dat de oude vlam nog altijd fel brandt.

Het resultaat is een album dat duidelijk een nieuw hoofdstuk markeert. Waar eerdere werken soms nadrukkelijk richting Scandinavië keken, keert de band nu terug naar haar Helleense wortels zonder daarbij te vervallen in goedkope nostalgie.
Vanaf de bezwerende intro The Spiral Echoes wordt direct duidelijk welke sfeer de band nastreeft. Geen overdaad aan bombast, maar een sluimerende dreiging die langzaam wordt opgebouwd. Hate Spells en Towards Nothingness trekken die lijn overtuigend door met repetitieve riffs, sobere melodieën en een ritmesectie die meer hypnotiseert dan overweldigt. Juist die herhaling werkt verslavend; de muziek voelt als een ceremonie waarin iedere riff zijn vaste plaats kent.
Liefhebbers van de klassieke Griekse school zullen ongetwijfeld raakvlakken horen met bands als Nocternity, Kawir en Legion of Doom. Toch klinkt Ceremonial Worship nergens als een goedkope imitatie. De riffs ademen weliswaar die typische heroïsche Helleense sfeer, maar worden gecombineerd met een rauwere benadering die af en toe doet denken aan de Scandinavische tweede golf. Daardoor ontstaat een fraaie balans tussen melodie, agressie en occultisme.
Ook productioneel is de juiste keuze gemaakt. Alles klinkt organisch en ongepolijst zonder in een modderige brij te veranderen. De gitaren behouden hun warme karakter, de drums klinken natuurlijk en de schrille vocalen versterken het ritualistische karakter van de composities. Vooral tijdens Esoteric Struggle en Pantheon of Suffering weet de band een indrukwekkende spanning op te bouwen, waarbij de muziek voortdurend laveert tussen dreiging en melancholie.
Toch is Between Sleep and Death niet geheel zonder kanttekeningen. De nadruk op repetitie en sfeer zorgt ervoor dat sommige nummers minder gemakkelijk blijven hangen dan je zou hopen. Af en toe had een onverwachte wending of een sterker uitgespeelde melodie de dynamiek ten goede kunnen komen. Daardoor vloeien enkele composities wat in elkaar over, zeker tijdens langere luistersessies.
Dat neemt niet weg dat Ceremonial Worship een bijzonder overtuigende ode aflevert aan de Helleense blackmetaltraditie. Dit is geen album dat moderne trends probeert te volgen of indruk wil maken met technische hoogstandjes. In plaats daarvan kiest de band voor bezwering, atmosfeer en een oprechte liefde voor de oude Griekse school. Voor liefhebbers van ritualistische, occulte black metal is Between Sleep and Death dan ook een release die moeiteloos zijn plaats verdient tussen het betere werk dat Hellas de afgelopen jaren heeft voortgebracht.
