Masks have always served a purpose. They conceal weakness, disguise intention, and allow people to become someone they are not. In today’s world, those masks have become almost permanent. Social media, politics, ambition, and blind conformity have turned authenticity into a rarity. On Masquerade, French outfit Dark Plague tears away those disguises and exposes the ugliness hidden beneath polished appearances.
Following The Threshold of Death, the band shifts its focus from mortality to the living. Rather than dwelling on death itself, Masquerade explores hypocrisy, manipulation, desire, and the silent decay of modern society. It is a concept that suits the band’s direct and uncompromising approach, with every track contributing another piece to the larger picture.
Musically, Dark Plague stays close to the foundations of melodic black metal. Razor-sharp tremolo riffs, relentless blast beats, and icy melodies dominate the album from beginning to end. Session drummer Kevin Paradis once again proves why he is one of the busiest names in extreme metal, delivering a performance that is both technically impressive and relentlessly aggressive without overshadowing the songs themselves.
Tracks such as “Modern Lament” and “Insidious Plague of Mind” demonstrate the band’s greatest strength. The guitar work effortlessly balances melody and hostility, creating memorable moments without sacrificing intensity. The riffs are well constructed and often linger long after the songs have ended, while the harsh vocals maintain a convincing sense of urgency throughout the record.
Still, Masquerade is not without its shortcomings. While the musicianship remains consistently strong, several songs rely on familiar structures and similar tempos, making the second half of the album feel slightly less distinctive than its opening run. Likewise, the production, although organic and suitably raw, occasionally lacks the depth and impact that could have elevated some of the stronger compositions even further.
That said, Dark Plague never attempts to reinvent the wheel, nor does it need to. Instead, the band focuses on writing honest, well-crafted songs rooted in conviction rather than trends. Masquerade succeeds because it understands where its strengths lie: memorable riffs, genuine aggression, and a thematic concept that feels surprisingly relevant in an age where appearances often matter more than truth.
Dark Plague may not tear down the foundations of the genre, but with Masquerade they have delivered another solid and convincing chapter in their career. An album that reveals its true face not through spectacle, but through determination and sincerity.

Maskers zijn van alle tijden. Ooit dienden ze om gezichten te verbergen, rituelen kracht bij te zetten of een nieuwe identiteit aan te nemen. Tegenwoordig lijken ze vooral symbool te staan voor een maatschappij waarin schijn belangrijker is geworden dan oprechtheid. Achter zorgvuldig opgebouwde façades gaan hypocrisie, hebzucht en machtswellust schuil. Op Masquerade richt het Franse Dark Plague zijn pijlen precies op die wereld, waarin bijna niemand nog zijn ware gezicht durft te tonen.
Na The Threshold of Death, waarop sterfelijkheid centraal stond, verschuift de band de aandacht naar de levenden. De acht nummers vormen samen een aanklacht tegen sociale druk, manipulatie en de constante drang om een rol te spelen. Dat concept sluit naadloos aan bij de muziek, die zich nergens laat afleiden door overbodige franjes maar vanaf de eerste minuut recht op zijn doel afgaat.
Dark Plague kiest voor een vertrouwde combinatie van ijzige melodieën, messcherpe riffs en onophoudelijke blastbeats. De gitaren vormen daarbij het kloppende hart van de plaat. Melodie en agressie houden elkaar voortdurend in evenwicht, waardoor nummers als Modern Lament en Insidious Plague of Mind gemakkelijk blijven hangen zonder hun venijn te verliezen. Ook de rauwe vocalen dragen bij aan de dreigende sfeer en klinken overtuigend genoeg om de boodschap kracht bij te zetten.
Een belangrijke rol is opnieuw weggelegd voor sessiedrummer Kevin Paradis. Zijn spel is strak, krachtig en technisch indrukwekkend, zonder de aandacht van de composities af te leiden. Hij geeft de nummers precies de energie die ze nodig hebben en tilt het geheel hoorbaar naar een hoger niveau.
Toch is Masquerade niet volledig vrij van kritiek. De band blijft dicht bij de klassieke blauwdruk van melodische black metal, waardoor echte verrassingen uitblijven. Vooral in de tweede helft van het album beginnen sommige nummers qua tempo en opbouw sterk op elkaar te lijken. Ook de productie klinkt bewust ruw en organisch, maar mist af en toe de diepgang en impact die bepaalde riffs nog meer gewicht hadden kunnen geven.
Dat neemt niet weg dat Dark Plague precies doet waar het goed in is. Zonder zich te verliezen in moderne trends of geforceerde vernieuwing levert de band een eerlijke, overtuigende plaat af waarin sterke gitaarpartijen, agressie en een actueel concept samenkomen. Masquerade zal het genre niet opnieuw definiëren, maar bewijst wel dat een goed geschreven album nog altijd meer indruk maakt dan de mooiste maskers.
