When we started Merg en Been Magazine in 2025, one of the very first bands we reviewed was the Northern French Galibot. Not long after, they also became one of the first bands we interviewed. From the very beginning, it was clear that Galibot was never simply a band making music, but a project determined to evoke an entire atmosphere and history, deeply rooted in the mining heritage of Northern France.
Now, more than a year later, their second album Catabase sees the light of day. Despite my autocorrect stubbornly trying to turn it into “Database,” the title obviously has nothing to do with IT. A “catabasis” is a descent into the underworld, a journey into the depths beneath the earth’s surface — a theme that perfectly matches Galibot’s identity. Their music quite literally and figuratively searches for darkness underground, among abandoned mine shafts, dust, stone, and forgotten tunnels buried deep beneath Northern France.
Where many Black Metal bands draw inspiration from forests, mountains, or ruins, Galibot embraces a far more industrial and earthly form of darkness. In their music you can hear the echo of centuries of labor beneath the ground, the claustrophobic feeling of narrow tunnels, and the constant presence of danger and death.
The name Galibot itself already carries that history. The galibots were children from impoverished families who were sent into the mines at a very young age to work. For miserable wages, they helped keep starving families alive. It is a harsh and confronting chapter of history inseparably tied to Northern France, a region scarred by heavy industrialization, deep poverty, and endless social misery.
On top of that, this region still bears the scars of World War I. Northern France was one of the war’s major front regions, a place where the conflict left deep wounds in both the landscape and the collective memory. The same ground where soldiers once died and artillery tore the earth apart was later ripped open again by mining and industry. It gives Galibot an almost tangible historical foundation: their music sounds as though it rises from the same black soil where coal, blood, mud, and human despair have been mixed together for generations.
The melodic Black Metal quintet from Wallers-Arenberg — a place cycling fans will immediately recognize because of the legendary cobblestones of the Arenberg Forest — near Valenciennes once again delivers an impressive album with Catabase.
With inspired song titles such as Bleu noir rouge, where the white stripe of the French tricolour seems stained black with soot and coal dust, Galibot immediately makes it clear that the band takes its history seriously. Their music is not merely an aesthetic exercise in darkness, but a tribute to a region shaped by mining, poverty, war, and heavy industry.
Led by vocalist Agathe Boulanger, better known under her stage name Diffamie, the band drags you effortlessly down the elevator shaft into the dark depths of their musical underworld through raw vocals and an intense atmosphere. Her voice sounds sharp, desperate, yet defiant at the same time, as if she embodies the echo of generations of miners descending into the depths to meet their fate.
Although Galibot is still a relatively young band, Catabase sounds remarkably mature and fully realized. The combination of melodic passages, furious Black Metal outbursts, and an almost tangible historical atmosphere makes it clear that these French musicians aim to be far more than just another Black Metal band. They are building an identity of their own, firmly anchored in the black dust of Northern France.

Toen we in 2025 begonnen met Merg en Been Magazine, was een van de eerste bands die een recensie kreeg het Noord-Franse Galibot. Niet veel later behoorden zij ook tot de eerste bands die we interviewden. Vanaf het begin was duidelijk dat Galibot geen band is die simpelweg muziek maakt, maar een project dat een complete sfeer en geschiedenis probeert op te roepen, diep geworteld in het mijnverleden van Noord-Frankrijk.
Nu, ruim een jaar later, verschijnt hun tweede album Catabase. Ondanks dat mijn schrijfcorrectie hier koppig “Database” van probeert te maken, heeft de titel uiteraard niets met IT te maken. Een “catabase” is een afdaling naar de onderwereld, een reis naar de diepten onder het aardoppervlak, een thema dat perfect aansluit bij de identiteit van Galibot. Hun muziek zoekt immers letterlijk en figuurlijk het duister onder de grond op, tussen verlaten mijnschachten, stof, steen en vergeten tunnels diep in de Noord-Franse onderwereld.
Waar veel Black Metal bands inspiratie halen uit bossen, bergen of ruïnes, richt Galibot zich op een veel industriëlere en aardser vorm van duisternis. Je hoort in hun werk de echo van eeuwen arbeid onder de grond, het claustrofobische gevoel van smalle gangen en de constante aanwezigheid van gevaar en dood.
De naam Galibot zelf draagt die geschiedenis al met zich mee. De galibots waren kinderen uit arme gezinnen die al op jonge leeftijd de mijnen in gestuurd werden om te werken. Voor een schamel loon droegen zij bij aan het overleven van families die vaak op de rand van verhongering leefden. Het is een hard en confronterend stuk geschiedenis dat onlosmakelijk verbonden is met Noord-Frankrijk, een streek die getekend werd door zware industrialisatie, diepe armoede en eindeloze sociale ellende.
Daarbovenop draagt deze regio ook nog eens de littekens van oorlog. Noord-Frankrijk was een van de belangrijkste frontgebieden tijdens World War I, een oorlog die er diepe wonden in het landschap en in het collectieve geheugen achterliet. De grond waar ooit soldaten stierven en artillerie de aarde openscheurde, werd later opnieuw opengebroken door mijnbouw en industrie. Het geeft Galibot een bijna tastbare historische bedding: hun muziek klinkt alsof ze opstijgt uit dezelfde zwarte aarde waarin steenkool, bloed, modder en menselijke wanhoop al generaties lang vermengd zitten.
Het melodieuze Black Metal-vijftal uit Wallers-Arenberg, een plaats die wielerliefhebbers vooral zullen kennen van de legendarische kasseistroken van het Bos van Arenberg, onder de rook van Valenciennes weet ook met dit album opnieuw een indrukwekkende plaat neer te zetten.
Met geïnspireerde titels als Bleu noir rouge, waarbij het witte vlak van de Franse tricolore als het ware zwartgeblakerd wordt door roet en kolenstof, laat Galibot direct horen en voelen dat de band haar geschiedenis serieus neemt. Hun muziek is niet zomaar een esthetische oefening in duisternis, maar een eerbetoon aan een regio die gevormd werd door mijnbouw, armoede, oorlog en zware industrie.
Onder leiding van zangeres Agathe Boulanger, beter bekend onder haar artiestennaam Diffamie, sleept de band je met rauwe vocalen en intense sfeer moeiteloos de liftschacht in, richting de donkere diepten van hun muzikale onderwereld. Haar stem klinkt scherp, wanhopig en tegelijk strijdvaardig, alsof ze de echo vormt van generaties mijnwerkers die diep onder de grond hun lot tegemoet gingen.
Ondanks dat Galibot nog een relatief jonge band is, klinkt Catabase opvallend volwassen en doordacht. De combinatie van melodieuze passages, furieuze Black Metal-uitbarstingen en een bijna tastbare historische sfeer maakt duidelijk dat deze Fransen meer willen zijn dan zomaar de volgende Black Metal-band. Ze bouwen aan een eigen identiteit, stevig verankerd in het zwarte stof van Noord-Frankrijk.
