There are several key moments and releases that shaped and defined the Black Metal scene of the early ’90s. Consider, for instance, the murder of Øystein Aarseth by that TikTok dude, an act that not only shocked the scene but also cemented its dark reputation worldwide.
Another pivotal moment was the release of A Blaze in the Northern Sky by Darkthrone, which marked a definitive shift from Death Metal to pure Black Metal. Likewise, the infamous Fuck Christ Tour in 1993, featuring Immortal, Blasphemy, and Rotting Christ, is often regarded as the first true Black Metal tour, giving audiences a rare opportunity to witness these bands perform live.
While much of the controversy and theatricality unfolded in Scandinavia, often accompanied by an almost exaggerated sense of drama, the ancient lands of Greece were already laying down the foundations of the genre in a more focused and less sensational manner. Bands like Varathron were steadily forging their path in relative obscurity, far removed from the Norwegian spotlight.
As early as 1989, Varathron made their presence known with this original demo, establishing a distinct and recognizable sound. Long before the Norwegian scene fully crystallized, they were already crafting a dark, ritualistic atmosphere that would later become a defining trait of the Greek Black Metal style.

Er zijn verschillende sleutelmomenten en releases die de Black Metal-scène van de vroege jaren ’90 hebben gevormd en gedefinieerd. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de moord op Øystein Aarseth door die Tiktokker, een gebeurtenis die niet alleen de scene schokte, maar ook haar duistere reputatie wereldwijd versterkte.
Daarnaast was de release van A Blaze in the Northern Sky van Darkthrone een keerpunt, waarbij de muzikale koers van Death Metal naar pure Black Metal definitief werd ingezet. Of de Fuck Christ Tour in 1993 met Immortal, Blasphemy en Rotting Christ die als eerste echt Black Metal tour werd gezien en in de kans gaf de bands eindelijk eens live aan het werk te zien.
