“You’re into black and funeral doom? Then you need to hear this,” says Ward of Void Wanderer Productions, as he hands me a tape by Atlantic Ridge. The band name doesn’t ring a bell, but the intriguing cover art immediately sparks curiosity.
Italy’s Atlantic Ridge was formed in 2019 from the vision of Giuseppe Emanuele Frisone (also known for Thecodontion and Clactonian), who handles vocals, lyrics, and compositions within the project. The musical execution and recordings were carried out by Jacopo Gianmaria Pepe, while drums were programmed by guest musician Gabriele Gramaglia. After several years of focused work, this self-titled debut marks their first serious statement within the niche of atmospheric black and funeral doom. The material was recorded between 2019 and 2024 and now sees release on tape via Void Wanderer Productions and on CD via Dusktone.
Musically, Atlantic Ridge operates in slow, crushing territory with down-tuned guitars. Funeral doom – citing early Ahab as an influence – flows seamlessly into bleak atmospheric black metal. Opening track ‘Leo Terram Propriam Protegat’ builds at a glacial pace around a repetitive yet effective riff that holds for over three and a half minutes. Where such repetition often leads to monotony, subtle lead lines and swelling choral elements instead maintain a constant sense of tension. The tone is set: cold, vast, and inhospitable.
With ‘Our Faith Is Our Strength’, the band immediately reveals a more pronounced black metal side. Blast beats and dissonant riffs transition fluidly into dark, harmonic doom in the tradition of Thergothon and Mournful Congregation. The drum programming is solid and rarely noticeable as such, though a real drummer would still be preferable. Icy keyboard layers enhance the atmosphere, while the vocals sound like raw, primal cries. The result is a well-balanced mix of slow atmoblack, layered funeral doom, acoustic interludes, and evocative synth passages, supported by a heavy yet clear production.
Visually and thematically, the album is just as compelling. The striking cover depicts a grotesque sea monster lifting a ship from the ocean, as if taken from an old nautical map where the unknown was filled in with mythical creatures. This ties in perfectly with the album’s concept. Atlantic Ridge explores extremely remote and hostile regions, ranging from real locations to mythical and imagined places such as Tristan da Cunha and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. These settings serve as a framework for themes of isolation, survival, and human insignificance.
Several tracks stand out in particular. ‘Abandoned Buildings’, inspired by the deserted mining town of Pyramiden, evokes decaying ideals and frozen time, while ‘The Non-Existent Island’, referencing Freezeland, explores the boundary between reality and imagination. ‘Strange Paradise’, based on Socotra, paints an alien landscape where beauty and unease coexist. Toward the end, the album becomes more abstract, with settings such as the Gobi Desert evoking an almost existential emptiness.
With this debut, Atlantic Ridge delivers a convincing and atmospheric record that will effortlessly appeal to fans of both funeral doom and atmospheric black metal. The album is released on April 24 via Void Wanderer Productions (tape) and Dusktone (CD, digital).

Waar zulke herhaling vaak tot verveling leidt, zorgen subtiele leadlijnen en aanzwellende koorpartijen hier juist voor een constante spanningsboog. De toon is gezet: kil, uitgestrekt en onherbergzaam.
Met ‘Our Faith Is Our Strength’ laat de band direct een meer uitgesproken black metal-kant horen. Blastbeats en dissonante riffs gaan vloeiend over in donkere, harmonische doom in de traditie van Thergothon en Mournful Congregation. De drumprogramming is degelijk uitgevoerd en valt nauwelijks als zodanig op, al blijft een echte drummer persoonlijk de voorkeur houden. IJzige keyboardlagen versterken de sfeer, terwijl de vocalen klinken als rauwe oerkreten. Het geheel bestaat uit een uitgebalanceerde mix van trage atmoblack, gelaagde funeral doom, akoestische intermezzo’s en sfeervolle synthpassages, ondersteund door een logge maar heldere productie.
Ook visueel en thematisch zit het goed. De opvallende cover toont een grotesk zeemonster dat een schip uit de zee tilt, alsof het afkomstig is van een oude zeekaart waarop het onbekende werd ingevuld met mythische wezens. Dat sluit naadloos aan bij het concept van het album. Atlantic Ridge verkent extreem afgelegen en vijandige oorden, variërend van bestaande locaties tot mythische en denkbeeldige plaatsen zoals Tristan da Cunha en South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Ze worden als kapstok gebruikt voor thema’s als isolatie, overleving en menselijke nietigheid.
Enkele tracks springen daarbij extra in het oog. ‘Abandoned Buildings’, geïnspireerd door de verlaten mijnstad Pyramiden, ademt vergane idealen en stilgevallen tijd, terwijl ‘The Non-Existent Island’ met Freezeland juist de grens tussen realiteit en verbeelding opzoekt. ‘Strange Paradise’, gebaseerd op Socotra, schetst een vervreemdend landschap waarin schoonheid en ongemak hand in hand gaan. Richting het einde wordt het geheel abstracter, met onder meer de Gobiwoestijn als decor voor een bijna existentiële leegte.
Met dit debuut levert Atlantic Ridge een overtuigende en sfeervolle plaat af die liefhebbers van zowel funeral doom als atmosferische black metal moeiteloos zal aanspreken. Het album verschijnt op 24 april via Void Wanderer Productions (tape) als Dusktone (CD, digitaal).
