Ignis Fatuus, or Will-o’-the-Wisp, the nocturnal apparitions said to lure the unsuspecting traveler into the marshlands, where, according to European folklore, a gruesome death awaits. At least, that is how the legend goes.
Scientifically speaking, the phenomenon is most likely caused by gases released during the decomposition of organic matter. Phosphine in particular is known to spontaneously ignite upon contact with oxygen, potentially explaining the mysterious, flickering lights. But enough of that… we digress.
Ignis Fatuus is also the title of the new single by Finland’s most savage death metal force, Unearthly Rites. A band name that might suggest Black Metal at first glance, yet musically they are firmly rooted in raw, uncompromising Death Metal. Their sound is filthy, dark, and intense, exactly as the genre demands.
The two tracks presented here via Spotify serve as a preview of their upcoming second album, Tortural Symphony of the Flesh. The record will be released on April 3rd through Finnish label Svart Records, a company that has consistently delivered high-quality and dark releases within the extreme metal spectrum.
Production-wise, the sound is extremely raw, at times even leaning toward an underground Black Metal aesthetic. Now, I’m not exactly known for being the biggest Death Metal enthusiast, yet these two tracks certainly managed to win me over. Solstice in particular strongly reminded me of the early releases of Bolt Thrower, especially with that prominently rumbling bass cutting through everything.
A solid little single. Let’s see how the full album turns out, we’ll find out soon enough when it’s time to give it a proper listen.

Ignis Fatuus, oftewel Dwaallicht, de nachtelijke verschijningen die de nietsvermoedende reiziger het moeras in lokken, waar hem volgens de Europese folklore een gruwelijke dood wacht. Althans, zo wil de overlevering het.
Wetenschappelijk gezien gaat het hoogstwaarschijnlijk om gassen die vrijkomen bij het verrottingsproces van organisch materiaal. Vooral fosfine staat erom bekend spontaan te kunnen ontbranden wanneer het in contact komt met zuurstof, wat de mysterieuze, flakkerende lichtverschijnselen zou kunnen verklaren. Maar goed… we dwalen af.
Ignis Fatuus is tevens de titel van de nieuwe single van het Finse deathmetalgeweld Unearthly Rites. Een bandnaam die eerder aan Black Metal doet denken, maar muzikaal onmiskenbaar geworteld is in de rauwe, compromisloze Death Metal. Hun geluid is smerig, duister en intens, precies zoals het hoort binnen het genre.
De twee nummers die via Spotify worden gepresenteerd, vormen een voorproefje van hun tweede album, Tortural Symphony of the Flesh. Deze plaat verschijnt op 3 april via het Finse Svart Records, een label dat al jaren garant staat voor kwalitatief sterke en duistere releases binnen het extreme spectrum.
Qua productie is het enorm rauw en fiets het af en toe ook meer richting een underground Black-Metal productie aan. Nu sta ik niet bekend als de grootste Death-Metal fan zo konden deze twee me wel bekoren, zeker Solstice deed me sterk herinneren aan de eerste Bolt-Thrower releases met de zeer aanwezige bas die overal doorheen dreunt.
Een lekker singletje, eens kijken hoe het album wordt, maar dat zullen we tegen die tijd wel eens gaan beluisteren.
