In 1990, in the industrial haze and salt-soaked harbor atmosphere of Piraeus, Grigoris Expulsion Angel and Panos Horrendus Infernal Grave decided to form a band that would embody the darkest depths of the extreme underground. They christened their creation Nergal, named after the Babylonian god of the underworld, war, death, disease, and total destruction, a name perfectly suited to the nihilistic and infernal vision they sought to unleash through their music.
Within the underground scene, Nergal quickly became a cult name, whispered among tape traders, obscure fanzines, and smoke-filled rehearsal rooms. Their reputation survived through a dedicated network of devotees to raw and uncompromising Black and Death Metal, far removed from commercial trends or media attention.
Ironically, the name Nergal is nowadays more commonly associated by the mainstream with a Polish social media personality who happens to play in a metal band, rather than with the original Greek cult entity that carried the name years earlier as a symbol of chaos and destruction.
Throughout the first half of the 1990s, Nergal steadily built its reputation within the extreme underground. Between 1990 and 1996, the band released several demos as well as a split EP that is still regarded today as an obscure collector’s item among followers of the Greek Black Metal scene. In 1995, they unleashed their official debut album — a raw and ominous recording drenched in decay, mysticism, and infernal aggression.
Shortly after this period, however, the band vanished abruptly from the radar. In 1996, Nergal entered an almost mythical hibernation that would last for an entire decade. During those years, their cult status only continued to grow as old recordings circulated endlessly among tape traders and underground collectors.
The return finally came in 2006, when Nergal emerged from the shadows once more to reclaim the torch of their dark legacy. Since then, the band has released four additional full-length albums. Their latest offering is Blessed, released this year, an album that once again proves the flame of the old Greek underground still burns fiercely in the deepest catacombs of the metal world.
Belgian cult label Medieval Prophecy Records now digs deep into the vaults of the Greek underground once again with a reissue of the compilation originally released in 2012. This edition brings together the band’s first EP from 1993 and the now legendary split with Funeral Urn, two essential documents from the earliest days of Nergal.
The reissue also includes additional material that makes this release even more essential for devotees of obscure extreme metal: a rare promo track and three live recordings captured in Athens in 1991, when the band still sounded like an uncontrolled eruption of primitive Black and Death Metal. The raw production, chaotic intensity, and sinister atmosphere fully embody the spirit of the early nineties, an era when the underground revolved around tape trading, mysticism, and pure musical extremity.
All of this is packed onto a slab of vinyl and completed with four pages of old flyers and archival photographs, a rugged time capsule for devotees of the ancient Greek underground scene.

Zij doopten hun creatie Nergal, vernoemd naar de Babylonische god van de onderwereld, oorlog, dood, ziekte en totale verwoesting, een naam die perfect aansloot bij de nihilistische en infernale visie die zij muzikaal wilden uitdragen.
Binnen de undergroundscene groeide Nergal al snel uit tot een cultnaam, gefluisterd tussen tape traders, obscure fanzines en rokerige repetitiekelders. Ironisch genoeg wordt de naam Nergal tegenwoordig door het grote publiek eerder geassocieerd met een Poolse socialmediafiguur die toevallig ook in een metalband speelt, dan met de oorspronkelijke Griekse cultformatie die de naam jaren eerder al droeg als symbool van chaos en ondergang.
Nergal gedurende de eerste helft van de jaren negentig gestaag aan hun naam binnen de extreme underground. Tussen 1990 en 1996 bracht de band meerdere demo’s uit, evenals een split-EP die vandaag de dag nog steeds geldt als obscuur verzamelobject onder liefhebbers van de Griekse Black Metal-scene. In 1995 verscheen hun officiële debuutalbum, een rauwe en onheilspellende plaat die de sfeer van verval, mystiek en infernale agressie perfect wist te vatten.
Kort na deze periode verdween de band echter abrupt van de radar. In 1996 ging Nergal in een bijna mythische winterslaap die uiteindelijk tien jaar zou duren. Gedurende dat decennium groeide hun cultstatus alleen maar verder; oude opnames circuleerden onder tape traders en underground verzamelaars.
Die terugkeer kwam er uiteindelijk in 2006, toen Nergal opnieuw uit de schaduwen trad en de fakkel van hun duistere nalatenschap weer oppakte. Sindsdien bracht de band nog vier nieuwe albums uit. Hun meest recente wapenfeit is Blessed, uitgebracht dit jaar, een album dat opnieuw bewijst dat de vlam van de oude Griekse underground nog altijd brandt in de diepste krochten van de metalwereld.
Het Belgische cultlabel Medieval Prophecy Records graaft opnieuw diep in de krochten van de Griekse underground en presenteert een heruitgave van de compilatie die oorspronkelijk in 2012 verscheen. Op deze release worden de eerste EP uit 1993 en de inmiddels legendarische split met Funeral Urn opnieuw samengebracht — twee essentiële documenten uit de begindagen van Nergal.
