There are albums that confront you head-on with sheer aggression, and there are albums that slowly tighten their grip until escape no longer seems possible. Nous, le venin belongs firmly to the latter category. Mourir does not rely on immediate impact or flashy technicality, but patiently constructs an atmosphere of suffocating tension where despair, alienation, and inner turmoil gradually consume everything in their path. This is less an album to listen to than one to endure.
Formed in Toulouse, Mourir had already made a strong impression with Animal Bouffe Animal and Disgrâce, but Nous, le venin feels like the moment the band has fully realized its artistic identity. Featuring musicians who have also been active in projects such as Plebeian Grandstand and Bruit ≤, the quartet possesses an undeniable level of experience, yet little of it manifests itself as obvious influence. Instead, Mourir has forged a distinctive sound in which black metal, sludge, noise, and post-metal have become inseparable parts of a single oppressive entity rather than separate stylistic ingredients.
From the opening moments of Feu d’un regard, the band’s approach becomes immediately apparent. Dissonant guitar lines slowly emerge from silence while the rhythm section builds unease rather than urgency. When the inevitable eruption finally arrives, its impact is magnified by the patient buildup. Mourir understands that extremity is not merely measured by speed or volume, but by contrast. Silence is given almost as much importance as the overwhelming walls of sound that eventually crash down upon the listener.
That philosophy runs throughout the entire record. Tracks such as Ennui Ennemi and Je est absent shift effortlessly between crushing sludge passages, icy black metal tremolos, and dense layers of noise that make the music feel almost physically tangible. Despite the apparent chaos, however, the band never loses control. Beneath the turbulent surface lies meticulous songwriting, with every crescendo and every moment of restraint serving a clear purpose.
The production complements this perfectly. Raw without becoming muddy, it allows every layer to breathe while maintaining an overwhelming sense of weight. The guitars form an immense sonic wall, the bass constantly rumbles beneath the surface, and the drums drive the compositions forward with relentless determination. The tortured vocals are less traditional singing than another instrument, adding further intensity to the suffocating atmosphere.
Lyrically, Mourir remains devoted to themes of alienation, existential emptiness, and the gradual collapse of both the individual and society. Performed entirely in French, the vocals reinforce the band’s identity while adding another layer of emotional depth. Rather than resorting to melodrama, the band conveys these emotions with remarkable sincerity, making every outburst feel earned rather than theatrical.
The ten-minute title track ultimately serves as the album’s defining statement. Here, every element introduced throughout the record converges into a slow-burning composition that moves seamlessly between fragile melancholy and complete sonic devastation. Mourir never opts for an easy climax, instead allowing the tension to accumulate patiently until the listener is completely consumed.
With Nous, le venin, Mourir has delivered its strongest and most cohesive work to date. This is not an album for casual listening, but an immersive and emotionally exhausting experience that demands complete attention. Those willing to surrender to its suffocating fusion of black metal, sludge, noise, and post-metal will discover one of the most compelling and uncompromising extreme metal releases to emerge from France in recent years.

Nederlands:
