A dense wall of riffs, relentless blast beats, and Doedsadmiral’s rasping vocals drags the listener into a world where flesh, spirit, and faith are ground into one blackened whole. Yet the strength of Within the Flesh does not lie in aggression alone. The band’s ability to create space for melody, tension, and atmosphere elevates the album beyond many contemporary extreme metal releases.
Shatraug’s influence is unmistakable throughout the record. The riffs carry that characteristic Finnish melancholy and occult-infused melodic sensibility familiar from his work with Horna and Sargeist. In contrast, BST brings a more dissonant and menacing approach, causing tracks such as “Black Sun Dissolution” and “Omnipath” to constantly balance between tradition and chaos. The result is rarely comfortable, but that is precisely the point.
What stands out most is how naturally these different musical personalities merge. Where collaborations of this kind can sometimes sound like a collection of disconnected ideas, Doedsvangr succeeds in creating a cohesive atmosphere. The production is powerful without becoming sterile. Every layer remains audible, yet the music retains its dark and suffocating character.
Midway through the album, “Blodskam” emerges as one of its undisputed highlights. The composition gradually unfolds into a majestic flow of melodies that feels both triumphant and doomed. It is a track that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Doedsvangr: aggression as a means, atmosphere as the ultimate goal.
Closing track “Rites Of Thorns, Rise Of Flesh” provides a fitting conclusion. Its ritualistic structure, dragging passages, and almost ceremonial intensity give the album a sense of completion, as though the listener has witnessed a carefully executed invocation.
Still, Within the Flesh is not an album that reveals all of its secrets at once. Some transitions feel intentionally disorienting, and not every riff immediately lodges itself in memory. Yet it is precisely this quality that makes the album grow stronger with repeated listens. Beneath the initial layer of violence lies a surprisingly rich tapestry of melodies, textures, and emotions.
With Within the Flesh, Doedsvangr proves that extreme metal can still sound relevant without abandoning its roots. This is not a nostalgic exercise in repetition, but an album that uses classic foundations to build something distinctive and compelling.

Met Within the Flesh levert het internationale gezelschap rond Doedsadmiral, Shatraug en BST een album af dat zowel vertrouwd als ontregelend aanvoelt. Een werk dat niet mikt op onmiddellijke impact alleen, maar zich langzaam in het bewustzijn nestelt en daar blijft knagen.
Vanaf opener “Devil Bites Man” wordt duidelijk dat Doedsvangr geen interesse heeft in subtiliteit. Een dichte muur van riffs, furieuze blastbeats en de raspende vocalen van Doedsadmiral sleuren de luisteraar mee een wereld in waar vlees, geest en geloof worden vermalen tot één zwart geheel. Toch schuilt de kracht van Within the Flesh niet enkel in agressie. Juist de manier waarop de band ruimte creëert voor melodie, spanning en atmosfeer tilt het album boven veel van de hedendaagse extreme releases uit.
De invloed van Shatraug is doorheen de plaat duidelijk hoorbaar. De riffs ademen die typische Finse melancholie en occult geladen melodiek die we kennen van zijn werk bij Horna en Sargeist. Daartegenover staat de meer dissonante en dreigende benadering van BST, waardoor nummers als “Black Sun Dissolution” en “Omnipath” voortdurend balanceren tussen traditie en chaos. Het resultaat voelt zelden comfortabel aan, maar dat is precies de bedoeling.
Wat vooral opvalt, is hoe organisch de verschillende muzikale persoonlijkheden samensmelten. Waar zulke samenwerkingen soms klinken als een verzameling losse ideeën, weet Doedsvangr hier een coherente sfeer neer te zetten. De productie is krachtig zonder steriel te worden. Elke laag blijft hoorbaar, maar de muziek behoudt haar duistere, verstikkende karakter.
Halverwege biedt “Blodskam” een van de absolute hoogtepunten van het album. De compositie ontvouwt zich langzaam tot een majestueuze stroom van melodieën die zowel triomfantelijk als ondergangsgericht aanvoelen. Het is een nummer dat de essentie van Doedsvangr perfect samenvat: agressie als middel, sfeer als doel.
Afsluiter “Rites Of Thorns, Rise Of Flesh” vormt vervolgens een passende finale. De ritualistische opbouw, de slepende passages en de bijna ceremoniële intensiteit geven het album een gevoel van voltooiing, alsof de luisteraar getuige is geweest van een zorgvuldig uitgevoerde bezwering.
Toch is Within the Flesh geen plaat die onmiddellijk al haar geheimen prijsgeeft. Sommige overgangen voelen bewust desoriënterend aan en niet elke riff nestelt zich direct in het geheugen. Maar juist daardoor wint het album aan kracht bij herhaalde beluisteringen. Onder de eerste laag van geweld schuilt een verrassend rijk geheel van melodieën, texturen en emoties.
Met Within the Flesh bewijst Doedsvangr dat extreme muziek nog steeds relevant kan klinken zonder haar wortels te verloochenen. Geen nostalgische herhalingsoefening, maar een album dat klassieke fundamenten gebruikt om iets eigens en overtuigends neer te zetten.
Within the Flesh is een donkere, verstikkende en tegelijkertijd meeslepende reis door de schaduwzijde van de menselijke natuur. Een album dat niet enkel gehoord, maar ondergaan moet worden.
