After 37 years, Archgoat can without much discussion be counted among Finnish Black Metal nobility. Ritual Butcherer and Lord Angelslayer started the band back in 1989, at a time when the Finnish underground was slowly laying the foundations for a scene that would later become enormously influential. From the beginning, Archgoat chose its filthiest corner: primitive Black and Death Metal, a healthy dose of punk and lyrics that could never be accused of subtlety. Remarkably little has changed about that foundation over all those years.
That does not mean Archgoat’s history has been one long straight line. After the early demos and the now legendary Angelcunt (Tales of Desecration) EP from 1993, the band disappeared for years before returning in 2004. Since then, Archgoat has grown into one of the most recognisable names in the Finnish extreme underground. Nightbringer, Lightbringer is now their sixth full-length and arrives five years after Worship the Eternal Darkness.
And as soon as the album begins, any doubt disappears: this is Archgoat. Lord Angelslayer’s deep, almost inhuman vocals lie like a thick layer over the guitars, while Ritual Butcherer delivers riffs that are often surprisingly simple but effective precisely because of that. Archgoat has never needed technical fireworks. A filthy riff, a primitive rhythm and enough weight are usually more than sufficient.
The changes in tempo remain one of their strongest weapons. Of course the band can still unleash considerable violence, but Nightbringer, Lightbringer becomes more interesting whenever they ease off the accelerator. The slower passages take on a heavier, almost ceremonial character. Riffs are held longer, the drums pound underneath them and Angelslayer sounds as if somebody has opened a cellar door that would have been better left closed.
Still, this is not simply a copy of an older Archgoat record. The production is slightly more open and gives the individual instruments more room without making the music sound clean. Keyboards and atmospheric passages also appear, and here and there even a little more melody finds its way into the guitar work. Do not expect a sudden transformation: these are details placed firmly within the familiar sound. The mess has been rearranged slightly, but it is still the same cellar.
The two short Invocation pieces also add to the ritual character and divide the album naturally. They prevent eleven tracks of bestial Black/Death Metal from becoming one continuous mass while fitting perfectly into the almost caricaturally blasphemous world Archgoat has built over the decades.
And there is certainly no sign of mellowing with age. With titles such as Blood of Jesus Spilling Upon the Earth, Keys of Hell and of Death and Reaper of Christianity, you know exactly where you have ended up. Chris Moyen’s artwork completes the picture. There is no attempt to suddenly appear more tasteful, intellectual or modern in 2026. Archgoat remains Archgoat.
Perhaps that is ultimately the greatest strength of Nightbringer, Lightbringer. After so many years, this band has nothing left to prove. At the same time, it does not sound as though they are simply relying on their reputation. There is enough fire in the performance, while the small atmospheric additions keep the album from passing by entirely on autopilot.
Is this the record that will redefine Archgoat? Absolutely not. The band remains far too close to its familiar territory for that. But with Archgoat, that hardly feels like a problem. This is simply a good, old-fashioned record from a band that has guarded its own filthy patch of ground for decades and still rules it.
Finnish nobility that rarely disappoints. Nightbringer, Lightbringer changes nothing about that.

Nederlands:
