More than ten years after the release of Nigredo, Italian Black Metal outfit JANVS returns with new material. The band from Genoa, which released its debut album Fulgures in 2007 and followed it up with Vega a year later, has never been among the most prolific representatives of the Italian Black Metal scene. With Fatum Est, a five-track EP released through Avantgarde Music, the long silence is finally broken. The original line-up has reunited, and Dan Swanö was brought in to handle the production and mastering.
The title Fatum Est, loosely translated as ‘it is destined’, immediately offers a clue to the thematic direction. JANVS delves into Greek antiquity and mythology, with figures such as Ariadne, the Argonauts and the legendary horse Bucephalus finding their place within the concept. Rather than simply retelling historical stories, the band explores themes such as fate, mortality and the inevitability of certain events. These subjects lend themselves particularly well to the band’s dark and occasionally melancholic approach.
Musically, JANVS operates within a distinctive form of Black Metal in which aggression and melody constantly alternate. The guitars can sound fierce and biting, but the band can just as easily shift towards more measured passages where the melodies are given room to develop. As a result, the music often feels more solemn and melancholic than outright malevolent. This approach gives the compositions a certain grandeur without constantly resorting to excessive bombast.
The Italian-language vocals contribute significantly to this character. The interplay between harsh vocals and more restrained, clean passages gives the music an almost narrative dimension. Particularly within the mythological context, this works remarkably well. JANVS does not rely solely on speed or aggression to make an impression, but deliberately seeks a connection between music, lyrics and atmosphere.
It is also worth noting that the Greek subject matter does not automatically translate into a traditional Hellenic Black Metal sound. Anyone expecting an Italian interpretation of early Rotting Christ or Varathron will probably be disappointed. The similarities lie more in the attention to melody, mysticism and a certain sense of solemnity than in directly adopting specific musical characteristics. JANVS follows its own path far too deliberately for that.
With a running time of just under 23 minutes, Fatum Est marks a relatively compact return. This has the advantage of leaving little room for unnecessary digressions. At the same time, the limited duration raises the question of what JANVS could achieve with this material over the course of a full-length album. The combination of mythological themes, melodic Black Metal and an occasionally almost theatrical delivery certainly provides enough potential.
Fatum Est demonstrates that JANVS still knows how to carve out its own place within the genre after such a lengthy absence. The strength of this EP does not lie in musical innovation or an overwhelming display of aggression, but in the way melody, melancholy and historical themes reinforce one another. The result is a worthy return that leaves us particularly curious about what the next chapter might bring.

Nederlands:
