As if a fire has been lit somewhere underground and nobody intends to put it out. Cleansed by the Ancient Fire wastes no time getting started and keeps the pressure on from there. Guitars rage, the drums drive the music forward, and above it all come vocals delivered with brute force from somewhere deep below. Six tracks are all Vināyakas needs to leave a considerable trail of destruction.
The band comes from Finland, but I would not have guessed that from the music alone. My thoughts turn instead to the Canadian war metal scene: savage, heavy, and focused on an all-out assault. That almost un-Finnish quality is one of the things that makes this EP interesting to me. There is little emphasis on icy melodies or distant, mysterious atmosphere. Vināyakas drags you straight into the violence.
Yet this record is not only about speed. When the weight of the music comes through, the riffs have more room to do their work. That makes the assault more convincing than twenty-two minutes of playing as fast as possible would have been. The brutal vocals remain a defining part of the sound. They add another layer of filth and give the EP its merciless character.
The six tracks follow one another at a relentless pace. Titles such as Daemonic Summoning, Ruinous War Against the Kingdom of Two Suns, and Serpents of Hiranyakashipu suit the apocalyptic atmosphere Vināyakas conjures. Just over twenty-two minutes later, it is over: long enough to leave an impression, short enough to sustain its intensity. I find myself wanting to play the EP again straight away, if only to hear more clearly how the songs are put together beneath all that violence.
Cleansed by the Ancient Fire is a debut with a clear purpose. Vināyakas delivers thick war metal with brutal vocals and a sound that, despite the band’s Finnish origins, brings Canada to mind. WolfKult Religion has now released the EP on cassette as well. It is a fitting physical format for music that sounds as though it has been dug out of the ashes.

Nederlands:
