Romania has been delivering some excellent death metal lately. Earlier this year I reviewed Malignant Providence and was impressed by the old school brutality mixed with some unexpected twists. Now Andrei Crișan returns with three new tracks on a split alongside another Romanian act, Ephemerality. A split release is always a nice way to discover new bands, so let us see what both camps bring to the table.
Malignant Providence is the solo project of Andrei Crișan, handling all instruments and vocals himself. On the other side we find Ephemerality, another Romanian death metal project, led by Negoiță Ștefan.
The Malignant Providence side opens with Thy Curse of Immortal Flesh. The sound is immediately recognizable. The guitars have that old school death metal feeling, the vocals sound cavernous and hostile, and the riffs once again carry a sense of movement instead of relying solely on brutality. The second track, Signvm Natalis (Curse of the Father), continues in the same spirit and shows the growth of the project. There is enough variation to keep the attention while remaining firmly rooted in death metal.
Honor Your Guilt is perhaps the strongest contribution here. The track combines the harshness that made the earlier EP enjoyable with some subtle atmosphere hidden beneath the violence. It feels like a natural continuation of the material from …From The Palms Of Divine Existence.
However, there is one thing I cannot ignore. The final Malignant Providence track is once again the exact same recorded version of the Asphyx cover The Rack that already appeared on the previous EP. I mentioned back then that I would rather hear more original material than a cover, especially because the original songs were the strongest aspect of that release. Seeing the same recording appear again on this split feels like a missed opportunity. The cover is well executed and clearly comes from a place of genuine worship, but I would have preferred a fourth original track instead. The new songs prove that Andrei has enough ideas of his own.
The second half belongs to Ephemerality. Their sound is slightly more straightforward, focusing on heavy riffs and direct aggression. Pleasure Lies in Peril (The Resurrection) immediately grabs attention with a crushing guitar tone and a convincing old school atmosphere. The production sounds solid and gives the music enough weight.
Buried Fears keeps the momentum going with some memorable riffing and a good sense of pacing. There is definitely potential here. The foundations are strong, and the project already sounds capable of growing into something even more impressive.
The highlight of their side is Necrophilicon. This track feels the most complete and confident. The riffs stick, the transitions work, and the overall composition leaves a lasting impression. It is the moment where Ephemerality truly stands on its own rather than simply being “the other band on the split.”
The only downside is the closing Entombed cover, Left Hand Path. Much like with the Malignant Providence side, I am generally not a huge fan of cover songs taking up valuable space on a release. The execution is solid, but I always prefer hearing a band’s own identity. Ephemerality shows enough promise on the original tracks that another self-written song would have benefited the release more.
In the end this split presents two promising Romanian death metal projects. Malignant Providence delivers the stronger material overall and successfully builds upon the quality of the previous EP, while Ephemerality proves it deserves attention and has plenty of room to grow. The unfortunate choice of having both bands close their side with a cover song prevents this release from reaching an even higher score, but the original material is more than strong enough to make this worth your time.

Roemenië levert de laatste tijd opvallend veel sterke deathmetalreleases af. Eerder dit jaar recenseerde ik Malignant Providence en was ik onder de indruk van de oldschool brutaliteit die werd gecombineerd met enkele onverwachte wendingen. Nu keert Andrei Crișan terug met drie nieuwe nummers op een splitrelease samen met een andere Roemeense act: Ephemerality. Een split is altijd een mooie manier om nieuwe bands te ontdekken, dus laten we eens kijken wat beide kampen te bieden hebben.
Malignant Providence is het soloproject van Andrei Crișan, die alle instrumenten en vocalen zelf voor zijn rekening neemt. Aan de andere kant vinden we Ephemerality, eveneens een Roemeens deathmetalproject, geleid door Negoiță Ștefan.
De kant van Malignant Providence opent met Thy Curse of Immortal Flesh. Het geluid is meteen herkenbaar. De gitaren ademen die klassieke oldschool deathmetalsfeer, de vocalen klinken diep en vijandig, en de riffs hebben opnieuw een gevoel van dynamiek in plaats van uitsluitend op brute kracht te leunen. Het tweede nummer, Signvm Natalis (Curse of the Father), zet die lijn voort en laat zien dat het project zich verder ontwikkelt. Er is voldoende variatie aanwezig om de aandacht vast te houden, terwijl de muziek stevig geworteld blijft in death metal.
Honor Your Guilt is misschien wel de sterkste bijdrage van Malignant Providence. Het nummer combineert de rauwe agressie die de vorige EP zo aantrekkelijk maakte met een subtiele sfeerlaag die onder het geweld verborgen zit. Het voelt als een logische voortzetting van het materiaal op …From The Palms Of Divine Existence.
Toch is er één punt dat ik niet kan negeren. Het laatste nummer van Malignant Providence is opnieuw exact dezelfde opname van de Asphyx-cover The Rack, die ook al op de vorige EP stond. Destijds merkte ik al op dat ik liever meer origineel materiaal had gehoord dan een cover, juist omdat de eigen composities het sterkste aspect van die release vormden. Dat dezelfde opname opnieuw op deze split verschijnt, voelt daarom als een gemiste kans. De cover is goed uitgevoerd en straalt oprechte bewondering voor het origineel uit, maar een vierde eigen nummer had hier meerwaarde geboden. De nieuwe songs bewijzen immers dat Andrei meer dan genoeg eigen ideeën heeft.
De tweede helft van de split behoort toe aan Ephemerality. Hun geluid is iets directer en richt zich vooral op zware riffs en pure agressie. Pleasure Lies in Peril (The Resurrection) trekt meteen de aandacht dankzij een verpletterende gitaarklank en een overtuigende oldschool sfeer. De productie klinkt degelijk en geeft de muziek voldoende gewicht.
Buried Fears houdt het tempo erin met memorabele riffs en een goed gevoel voor opbouw. Hier zit duidelijk potentieel in. De basis staat stevig en het project klinkt nu al alsof het kan uitgroeien tot iets nog indrukwekkenders.
Het hoogtepunt van hun bijdrage is Necrophilicon. Dit nummer voelt het meest compleet en zelfverzekerd aan. De riffs blijven hangen, de overgangen werken uitstekend en de compositie laat een blijvende indruk achter. Het is het moment waarop Ephemerality echt op eigen benen staat, in plaats van simpelweg “de andere band op de split” te zijn.
Het enige minpunt is de afsluitende Entombed-cover Left Hand Path. Net als bij de Malignant Providence-kant ben ik over het algemeen geen grote liefhebber van covers die kostbare speelduur op een release innemen. De uitvoering is degelijk, maar ik hoor liever de eigen identiteit van een band. Ephemerality toont op de originele nummers meer dan genoeg potentie om een extra zelfgeschreven compositie te rechtvaardigen.
Uiteindelijk presenteert deze split twee veelbelovende Roemeense deathmetalprojecten. Malignant Providence levert over het geheel genomen het sterkste materiaal af en bouwt succesvol voort op de kwaliteit van de vorige EP, terwijl Ephemerality bewijst dat het de moeite waard is om in de gaten te houden en nog volop groeimogelijkheden heeft. De keuze om beide kanten af te sluiten met een cover verhindert dat deze release een nog hogere waardering verdient, maar het originele materiaal is meer dan sterk genoeg om deze split absoluut de moeite waard te maken.
