With their raw blend of traditional Heavy Metal, speed, and first wave Black Metal, the Limburg-based Praefator reignites the spirit of the eighties. Inspired by legendary acts such as Venom and Mercyful Fate, the band combines occult themes, uncompromising riffs, and an authentic old school sound into something that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Following the release of their recent debut EP, we spoke with the band about their origins, inspirations, and future plans.
Your debut EP was recently released, but the history of the band already started back in 2022. How did Praefator come into existence?
Praefator was born from the lyrics I, Praefator Leviathan, had written and from the desire to build our own raw, dark, traditional Heavy Metal identity around them. Together with my good friend Hellspawn, we started the band; during those early days he handled both guitar and drums. From that foundation, we continued to grow over the years. Through the local metal scene we eventually got in touch with Wraith, and not long after, Desecratör joined the lineup.
Your style could be described as First Wave Black Metal; I hear influences from Venom, Mercyful Fate, and similar bands. Where does the love for the 1980s come from, and why choose to channel that influence into your music?
It all comes quite naturally. We all have broad musical tastes, but at heart we simply love writing old school heavy metal. That passion for the 1980s runs deep; bands like Venom and Mercyful Fate shaped us, and that raw, unpolished energy perfectly matches what we want to create. It doesn’t feel like a conscious decision, but rather something that naturally flows out of us.
Lyrically and thematically, you clearly walk the path of the occult. How deep does that interest go?
Occultism and esotericism fit very well with the music we make. We also strongly disagree with the current organized Western religions, and that clearly reflects in the lyrics we write. By reading about Aleister Crowley and his Golden Dawn, or texts such as the Lesser Key of Solomon, our lyrics gain much more depth than simply shouting “Satan.” That aspect will become even more prominent in our new material.
The Parkstad region is mainly known for its Hardcore scene. How does Praefator fit into that?
We know that many people from that scene are metalheads as well and think Praefator is brutal. Musically, however, there’s very little overlap; what we do really belongs to a completely different corner of heavy music. It would definitely help if there were more traditional Heavy Metal bands around, but that’s not just a problem in Parkstad — it’s an issue throughout the entire Netherlands.
Your debut was recently released on cassette through Dying Victims Productions in Germany. How did that collaboration come about, and what have the reactions been like so far?
Once our recordings and visual presentation were finished, we approached several European labels about a possible collaboration. Dying Victims Productions replied within two days and were immediately incredibly enthusiastic. That’s how the partnership came to life, and we’re still extremely happy with it.
The production on the EP sounds raw yet very focused. How important was it for you to create an authentic old school sound?
Our EP was completely recorded and mixed DIY, so the raw sound came naturally. We simply made the most out of the limited time and equipment we had available. That also feels much more authentic than deliberately making something sound lo-fi while recording it in a professional studio.
How does the songwriting process within Praefator usually work? Do songs emerge from riffs, concepts, or more from atmosphere?
It varies from song to song. Often we work separately on riffs or lyrics and send cool ideas back and forth to shape them into a strong whole. In general, we only start rehearsing songs together once they are 100% finished and a demo has been recorded, rather than developing them in the rehearsal room.
How do you view the current Black Metal scene in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany?
We are very familiar with the Dutch Black Metal scene; some members even have their own solo projects within it. That being said, with Praefator we are booked far more often on Heavy, Speed, and Thrash Metal lineups than within the Black Metal scene, so the overlap has been fairly limited so far. In terms of sound and aesthetics, we are clearly much closer to the 1980s than to the typical ’90s Black Metal movement.
Besides music, are there influences from literature, horror films, or esoteric traditions that inspire Praefator?
Absolutely. We all love old horror films, Lovecraftian literature, esotericism, and occultism. But classical works such as Dante’s Inferno are also a major source of inspiration; the artwork for our EP was even directly based on it.
If you could have recorded one classic album from the 1980s yourselves, which album would it be and why?
Desecratör: Abigail by King Diamond — no explanation needed, simply perfect!
Hellspawn: The 1980s were an incredible decade for music, which doesn’t make this choice easy. I’m going with Morbid Visions by Sepultura, simply because it’s an album that has never left my listening rotation. I think that’s because Morbid Visions perfectly captured the raw and filthy essence of early death metal and immediately showed the world how it should be done!
Praefator Leviathan: I have to go with Melissa by Mercyful Fate. Everything about that record is fascinating — from the riffs and lyrics to the visual presentation and promotion surrounding it. Spectacular.
Wraith: Diamond Head – Lightning to the Nations! Mainly because I would make sure one of the greatest NWOBHM albums ever finally received the album cover it deserved. It’s bizarre that such a perfect album was originally released in a plain white sleeve, without a record label or even a tracklist. That masterpiece deserved far more recognition.
Finally: what’s on the agenda for Praefator in the coming months?
We are always working on new music. Around Pentecost we finished a new track that will make its live debut in August. Besides that, we want to continue writing for our full-length album as soon as possible, while naturally playing as many shows as we can, both in the Netherlands and abroad. There are also a few things currently in the works that we’re not allowed to talk about yet, so definitely keep an eye on us!

Naar aanleiding van hun recente debuut-EP spraken we met de band over hun ontstaan, inspiratiebronnen en toekomstplannen.
Onlangs verscheen de debuut-EP echter is de geschiedenis van de band reeds in 2022 gestart, hoe ontstond Praefator?
Preafator ontstond uit de lyrics die ik, Praefator Leviathan, schreef en uit de wens om daar een eigen rauwe, duistere, traditionele Heavy Metalidentiteit omheen te bouwen. Samen met mijn goede vriend Hellspawn zijn we de band begonnen; in die beginperiode nam hij zowel gitaar als drums voor zijn rekening. Vanuit dat fundament zijn we door de jaren heen verder gegroeid. Via de lokale metal scene kwamen we uiteindelijk in contact met Wraith, en niet veel later voegde Desecrator zich toe aan de line up.
Jullie stijl zou je kunnen omschrijven als first wave Black Metal, ik hoor Venom, Mercyful Fate en dergelijke bands. Vanwaar de liefde voor de jaren 80 en de keuze deze liefde toe te passen?
Dat gaat eigenlijk vrij natuurlijk. We hebben allemaal een brede muzikale smaak, maar het liefst schrijven we gewoon old school heavy metal. Die liefde voor de jaren tachtig zit diep; bands als Venom en Mercyful Fate hebben ons gevormd, en die rauwe, ongepolijste energie past perfect bij wat wij willen neerzetten. Het voelt dus niet als een bewuste keuze, maar eerder als iets dat vanzelf uit ons komt.
Qua thematiek en dergelijke bewandelen jullie duidelijk het pad van het Occulte, in hoever gaat dit interesse?
Occultisme en esoterie sluiten goed aan bij de muziek die wij maken. We zijn het bovendien sterk oneens met de huidige georganiseerde westerse religies, en dat weerspiegelt zich duidelijk in de lyrics die we schrijven. Door ons in te lezen over Aleister Crowley en zijn Golden Dawn, of de Lesser Key of Solomon, krijgen onze teksten veel meer diepgang dan simpelweg “satan” roepen. Dat gaat in onze nieuwe nummers alleen maar meer naar voren komen.
De regio Parkstad staat vooral bekend voor zijn Hardcore scène, hoe past Praefator daar tussen?
We weten dat veel mensen uit die scene metalheads zijn en Praefator ruig vinden. Muzikaal gezien is er echter weinig overlap; wat wij doen ligt echt in een andere hoek. Het zou zeker helpen als er meer traditionele Heavy Metalbands zouden zijn, maar dat geldt niet alleen voor Parkstad dat is een probleem in heel Nederland.
Jullie debuut is onlangs op cassette verschenen via Dying Victims Productions in Duitsland, hoe kwam die samenwerking tot stand en hoe zijn de reacties tot nu toe?
Toen onze opnames en beeldvorming klaar waren, hebben we een aantal Europese labels benaderd voor een mogelijke samenwerking. Dying Victims Productions reageerde binnen twee dagen en was meteen ontzettend enthousiast. Hieruit is de samenwerking ontstaan, en we zijn er nog steeds enorm tevreden mee.
De productie van de EP klinkt rauw maar toch erg doelgericht. Hoe belangrijk was het voor jullie om een authentieke old school sound neer te zetten?
Onze EP is volledig DIY opgenomen en gemixt, daardoor ontstond de rauwe sound vanzelf. We hebben het meeste gehaald uit de beperkte tijd en apparatuur die we hadden. Dat voelt ook authentieker dan het expres lo-fi laten klinken terwijl het gewoon in een studio is opgenomen.
Hoe verloopt het songwritingproces binnen Praefator? Ontstaan nummers vanuit riffs, concepten of eerder vanuit sfeer?
Dit varieert per nummer, vaak zijn we apart van elkaar met riffs of lyrics bezig en sturen we vette ideëen door om daar een goed geheel van te maken. Over het algemeen beginnen we pas nummers samen te oefenen als ze 100% af zijn en een demo opgenomen is, in plaats van dat ze in de oefenruimte tot stand komen.
Hoe kijken jullie naar de huidige Black Metal-scene in Nederland, België en Duitsland?
We zijn goed bekend met de Nederlandse black metalscene; sommige leden hebben daar zelfs hun eigen soloprojecten in. Dat gezegd hebbende worden we met Praefator veel vaker op heavy , speed en thrash metal line ups geboekt dan binnen de black metalhoek, dus de overlap is tot nu toe beperkt. Qua sound en esthetiek liggen we tenslotte duidelijk dichter bij de jaren ’80 dan bij de typische ’90s black metalstroming.
Zijn er naast muziek ook invloeden uit literatuur, horrorfilms of esoterische tradities die Praefator inspireren?
Zeer zeker. We zijn allemaal dol op oude horrorfilms, Lovecraftiaanse literatuur, esoterie en occultisme. Maar ook klassieke werken zoals Dante’s Inferno vormen een belangrijke inspiratiebron; de artwork van onze EP is daar zelfs direct op gebaseerd.
Als jullie één klassiek album uit de jaren 80 hadden mogen opnemen, welk album zou dat dan zijn en waarom?
Desecratör: Abigail van King Diamond, geen toevoeging, gewoon perfect!
Hellspawn: De jaren 80 waren een geweldig decennium voor muziek, wat deze keuze niet makkelijk maakt. Ik ga voor ‘Morbid Visions’ van Sepultura, simpelweg omdat het een album is dat mijn luisterrotatie nooit verlaten heeft. Ik denk dat dit toe te schrijven is aan het feit dat “Morbid Visions” de rauwe en smerige essentie van de vroege death metal écht perfect vastlegde; en de wereld daarmee direct maar eens even liet zien hoe het gedaan wordt!
Praefator Leviathan: ik moet wel gaan voor Melissa van Mercyful Fate, alles op de plaat is zo interessant, van de riffs en lyrics tot de vormgeving en de promotie eromheen, spectaculair
Wraith: Diamond Head – Lightning to the Nations! Vooral omdat ik ervoor zou zorgen dat een van de beste NWOBHM albums ooit eindelijk de albumhoes krijgt die het verdient. Het is bizar dat zo’n perfect album destijds werd uitgebracht in een simpele witte hoes, zonder platenlabel of zelfs maar een tracklist. Dat meesterwerk had veel meer eer moeten krijgen.
Tot slot: wat staat er de komende maanden op de planning voor Praefator?
We zijn altijd met nieuwe muziek bezig. Rond Pinksteren hebben we een nieuw nummer afgerond dat in augustus zijn livedebuut gaat maken. Daarnaast willen we zo snel mogelijk verder met schrijven voor ons full length album, en tussendoor natuurlijk zoveel mogelijk shows spelen, zowel in Nederland als over de grens. Er zijn bovendien al een paar dingen in de maak waar we nog niets over mogen zeggen, dus hou ons vooral in de gaten!
