Sometimes you end up at the bottom of the pile, that’s just the way it goes. Even at a small and insignificant Black Metal magazine, this happens on a regular basis. With the endless flood of releases being thrown our way every single week, it’s only understandable that some albums slip through the cracks. Still, this new record by Ernte should never have ended up there in my opinion. So, I finally decided to bite the bullet, put on the headphones, and give this release the extensive listening session it deserved.
The Swiss duo consists of V Noir, whom we know from Häxär, and Ashahex, known from Ashtar. Since their formation in 2020, the pair has proven to be remarkably productive, with three full-length albums and an EP already under their belt, now followed by a fourth album.
Despite their relatively short existence, Ernte has steadily developed into a respected name within the Swiss underground scene, thanks to their consistent output and their ability to combine a dark atmosphere with a stripped-down yet effective intensity.
They once again succeed in doing exactly that on this latest release, which was issued through the German label Purity Through Fire. One thing that immediately stands out, however, is the absence of a real drummer. Personally, I have no issue with the use of drum programming, there are more than enough high-quality options available nowadays, but I still think an organic drum performance would have added that little extra to the overall sound. Especially considering the band is supported live by Warmaster Kron behind the kit, it naturally raises the question of why they did not simply bring him in for the recording sessions as well.
Aside from that, I genuinely enjoy this kind of straightforward Black Metal: direct, no-nonsense, and without unnecessary embellishments. The closing track Ritval Pyre especially stands out thanks to its strong d-beat and punk influences, making for a powerful and fitting finale to the album. Other highlights include the opening track Warrior of the Black Flame and the heavier sounding Lucifer.

Soms kom je onderaan de stapel terecht, dat is nou eenmaal zo, ook bij een klein onbeduidend Black Metal magazine gebeurd dit geregeld. Met de zondvloed aan releases die wekelijks onze kant op geslingerd worden is dat natuurlijk ook niet meer dan begrijpelijk dat dit gebeurt maar deze nieuwe plaat van Ernte had daar wat mij betreft nooit mogen belanden. Dus de stoute schoenen maar aangetrokken, de hoofdtelefoon op de oren gezet en het geheel maar eens aan een uitgebreide luisterbeurt onderworpen.
Het Zwitserse duo Ernte bestaat uit V Noir, die we kennen van Häxär, en Ashahex, bekend van Ashtar. Sinds hun ontstaan in 2020 heeft het tweetal zich opmerkelijk productief getoond, met inmiddels drie langspelers en een EP op hun naam, waaraan nu dus een vierde album wordt toegevoegd.
Ondanks hun relatief korte bestaan heeft Ernte zich ondertussen ontwikkeld tot een vaste waarde binnen de Zwitserse underground, mede dankzij hun consequente output en het vermogen om donkere atmosfeer te combineren met een sobere maar doeltreffende intensiteit.
Ze slagen daar ook op deze nieuwste plaat wederom in, een release die verscheen via het Duitse Purity Through Fire. Wat echter meteen opvalt, is de afwezigheid van een echte drummer. Persoonlijk heb ik geen bezwaar tegen het gebruik van drumprogramma’s — tegenwoordig bestaan er immers meer dan genoeg kwalitatieve opties, maar ik denk toch dat een organische drumprestatie nét dat beetje extra had kunnen toevoegen aan het geheel. Zeker omdat de band tijdens liveoptredens wordt ondersteund door Warmaster Kron achter de trommels, rijst automatisch de vraag waarom men hem niet gewoon voor deze opname heeft ingeschakeld.
Voor de rest houd ik wel van dit soort eenvoudige Black Metal: lekker rechttoe rechtaan en zonder al te veel poespas. Vooral afsluiter Ritval Pyre valt bijzonder in de smaak dankzij de sterke d-beat- en punkinvloeden, wat zorgt voor een krachtige en passende afsluiter van de plaat. Andere uitschieters zijn opener Warrior of the Black Flame en het zwaarder aangezette Lucifer.
