After listening to the reissue of the old EPs from the nineties, I became curious about what the new album by Nergal would sound like. Somehow, this release had slipped through the well-known cracks of the net a few months ago.
The line-up has undergone quite a few changes since the previous album. Their last full-length, Νύκτα γεμάτη θάματα – νύκτα σπαρμένη μάγια, already dates back nine years to 2017. For this new record, we once again find Porphyrion — known from Kawir and Cult of Eibon — behind the microphone. Meanwhile, Expulsion Angel handles the synthesizers and backing vocals, while Nyogtha of Cult of Eibon took care of both guitar and bass duties.
Agis Tzoukopoulos, also known from Kawir, was recruited to handle the drums, and I must say he delivers a remarkably convincing performance. His drumming gives the songs exactly the right amount of power and dynamics. On top of that, Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ also stopped by the studio to provide guest vocals on two tracks, adding an extra touch of prestige to the album.
With such a line-up and history, it could hardly turn out any other way than as a quintessential Greek Black Metal record, drenched in the glorious atmosphere of the nineties. The characteristic combination of epic melodies, ritualistic keyboards, and solemn, almost incantatory vocals breathes pure nostalgia for the golden days of the Hellenic scene.
And that is exactly what Blessed is: a solid Greek Black Metal album. Across six tracks, there is really nothing new under the Greek sun, but honestly, there does not need to be. This is simply old-school enjoyment of a formula that has already proven itself for decades. Why reinvent the wheel when the classic approach still works this effectively?
A fine album by a fine band that has more than earned its stripes.

Na het luisteren van de heruitgave van de oude ep’s uit de jaren negentig was ik toch benieuwd hoe die nieuwe plaat van Nergal dan wel niet zou klinken. Deze was namelijk tussen de welbekende mazen van het net geglipt een aantal maanden terug.
De line-up heeft sinds het vorige album wel de nodige veranderingen ondergaan. Hun laatste langspeler, Νύκτα γεμάτη θάματα – νύκτα σπαρμένη μάγια, dateert namelijk alweer van negen jaar geleden, uit 2017. Voor deze nieuwe plaat zien we onder andere Porphyrion, bekend van Kawir en Cult of Eibon, opnieuw achter de microfoon staan. Daarnaast verzorgt Expulsion Angel de synthesizers en backing vocals, terwijl Nyogtha van Cult of Eibon verantwoordelijk was voor zowel gitaar als bas.
Ook Agis Tzoukopoulos, onder andere bekend van Kawir, werd gevraagd om de drums voor zijn rekening te nemen, en dat deed hij bijzonder overtuigend, moet ik zeggen. Zijn spel geeft de nummers precies de juiste dosis kracht en dynamiek mee. Daarnaast kwam ook Sakis Tolis van Rotting Christ nog even de studio binnengewandeld om gastvocalen te verzorgen op twee nummers, wat de plaat nog net dat extra beetje cachet meegeeft.
Met zo’n line-up en geschiedenis kan het eigenlijk bijna niet anders dan dat je een typische Griekse Black Metalplaat voorgeschoteld krijgt, doordrenkt met die heerlijke sfeer van de jaren negentig. De kenmerkende combinatie van epische melodieën, ritualistische toetsenpartijen en plechtige, vaak bezwerende vocalen ademt pure nostalgie uit naar de gloriedagen van de Helleense scene.
En dat is ook precies wat Blessed is: een degelijke Griekse Black Metalplaat. Zes nummers lang krijg je eigenlijk niets nieuws onder de Griekse zon voorgeschoteld, maar eerlijk gezegd hoeft dat ook helemaal niet. Dit is gewoon ouderwets genieten van een formule die zichzelf al decennialang bewezen heeft. Want waarom zou je het wiel opnieuw proberen uit te vinden wanneer de klassieke aanpak nog steeds zo doeltreffend werkt?
Prima plaat van een prima band die hún strepen verdient hebben.
