Last year, through Brutal Insanity Records and thanks to Roy, we got our hands on a demo from a Chilean band. That demo turned out to be a reissue of a tape originally released back in 2006. While writing that review, we discovered that sole member Seb Reyes was no longer living in Chile, but had instead settled just 25 kilometers away from us, in Maastricht. Talk about coincidence.
In the meantime, Reyes has sunk his teeth into a proper successor to that now twenty-year-old demo, not counting the splits, for the sake of convenience, and the result now materializes in the form of Iron Baphomet. For bass duties and production, Francisco Escalona (Morphetik, Nightrage) was brought in, while the drums were hammered out by Filip Gaddnas of Vampiric Oath.
What we get on this debut album is Blackened Thrash firmly anchored in the 1980s. Growing up in Chile, Seb was exposed far more intensely to South American and Japanese Thrash than to the more familiar European scene, and those influences can clearly be heard throughout the record. Think the chaotic aggression of Sabbat mixed with the filthy, primitive fury of Sarcofago.
The riffs race by at high speed, the drums pummel relentlessly, and an unpolished, raw atmosphere hangs over the entire album, strongly reminiscent of the underground productions of the late ’80s. Still, it never feels like cheap nostalgia; Iron Baphomet radiates a genuine passion for an era when the more extreme forms of Thrash and Black Metal still sounded dangerous, unpredictable, and rebellious.
At times, one genre shines through more prominently than the other. On “From Hell,” for example, the Black Metal side takes center stage far more than the Thrash elements, while other tracks lean heavily into pure, raging Thrash Metal. Even so, it quickly becomes obvious where Seb’s true passion lies: the catchy riffs, memorable hooks, and energetic guitar work practically breathe the spirit of the 1980s.
The songs are packed with recognizable old-school energy without ever losing their own identity. Especially the way the riffs flow into one another and linger in your head reveals a deep love for the classic Thrash scene of the past.
But is this kind of metal still relevant in 2026? Absolutely. Countries like Germany still host a thriving underground scene dedicated to this raw mixture of Black, Speed, and Thrash Metal. On top of that, a strong revival has been taking place over the past years, with bands once again embracing the uncompromising sound of the ’80s and ’90s. While many modern productions have become sterile and overly polished, more and more bands are returning to dirtier riffs, analog-sounding production, and that authentic underground atmosphere that once defined extreme metal.
Iron Baphomet fits perfectly within that resurgence without ever feeling like a hollow retro exercise. Above all, the album sounds like a sincere love letter to a time when extreme metal still felt untamed and genuinely dangerous.

Vorig jaar kregen we via Brutal Insanity Records, dankzij Roy, een demo van een Chileense band in handen. Die demo bleek een heruitgave te zijn van een tape die oorspronkelijk al in 2006 verscheen. Tijdens het schrijven van die review kwamen we er onder andere achter dat het enige lid, Seb Reyes, inmiddels niet langer in Chili woonachtig was, maar op amper 25 kilometer afstand, in Maastricht. Wat een toeval.
Intussen heeft dezelfde meneer Reyes zijn tanden gezet in een volwaardige opvolger van die inmiddels twintig jaar oude demo, de splits rekenen we voor het gemak even niet mee, en die krijgt nu gestalte in de vorm van Iron Baphomet. Voor de basgitaar en productie werd Francisco Escalona (Morphetik, Nightrage) aangetrokken, terwijl de drums werden ingeslagen door Filip Gaddnas van Vampiric Oath.
Wat we op dit debuutalbum voorgeschoteld krijgen, is Blackened Thrash met de ankers diep verankerd in de jaren tachtig. Seb groeide op in Chili en kwam daardoor veel eerder en intensiever in aanraking met Zuid-Amerikaanse en Japanse Thrash dan met de meer bekende Europese stromingen. Die invloeden sijpelen dan ook nadrukkelijk door in de nummers. Denk daarbij aan de chaotische agressie van Sabbat of de smerige, primitieve furie van Sarcofago.
De riffs razen in hoog tempo voorbij, de drums rammen compromisloos door en over alles heen hangt die rauwe, ongepolijste sfeer die sterk doet denken aan de undergroundproducties van eind jaren tachtig. Toch voelt het nergens als goedkope nostalgie; Iron Baphomet ademt oprechte passie voor een periode waarin extremere vormen van Thrash en Black Metal nog gevaarlijk, onvoorspelbaar en rebels klonken.
Soms straalt het ene genre net iets nadrukkelijker door dan het andere. In “From Hell” bijvoorbeeld treedt de Black Metal veel sterker op de voorgrond dan de Thrash, terwijl andere nummers juist meer leunen op pure, razende Thrash Metal. Toch wordt al snel duidelijk waar de grootste voorliefde van Seb ligt: de catchy riffs, meeslepende hooks en opzwepende gitaarlijnen ademen haast volledig de sfeer van de jaren tachtig.
De songs zitten vol herkenbare old-schoolenergie zonder daarbij hun eigen identiteit te verliezen. Vooral de manier waarop de riffs in elkaar overvloeien en blijven hangen, verraadt een diepe liefde voor de klassieke Thrashscene van weleer.
Maar is dit soort metal anno 2026 nog relevant? Absoluut. Zeker in landen als Duitsland bestaat nog steeds een bijzonder sterke undergroundscene die volop inzet op deze ruwe mix van Black, Speed en Thrash Metal. Bovendien lijkt er de laatste jaren een duidelijke revival gaande waarbij bands opnieuw inspiratie halen uit het rauwe en compromisloze geluid van de jaren tachtig en negentig. Waar moderne producties vaak klinisch en overgepolijst klinken, kiezen steeds meer groepen opnieuw voor vuilere riffs, analoge producties en die authentieke undergroundsfeer die destijds zo typerend was.
Iron Baphomet past daardoor perfect binnen die heropleving, zonder aan te voelen als een goedkope retro-oefening. Het album klinkt vooral als een oprechte liefdesbrief aan een tijdperk waarin extreme metal nog ongetemd en gevaarlijk klonk.
