An alliance between Finland and Ecuador, now that promises something interesting. With roughly 10,000 kilometers separating the two countries, this may seem like an unlikely collaboration on paper, yet the Finnish outfit Dark Divinationand Ecuador’s Wampyric Rites found each other through the Portuguese label Signal Rex. The result of this dark alliance is an atmospheric split 7” on which both bands present their own interpretation of Black Metal.
Dark Divination debuted in 2023 with the EP The Journey Has Come to an End, though it would take another two years before the full-length Liitto hengen ja veren surfaced through Signal Rex. The project centered around Joel Kahara , also active in acts such as Kerzenlicht and Mystic Blood, once again delivers the characteristic Finnish sound already present on the debut album. Melodramatic guitar work, icy melodies, and subtle keyboard layers are combined with occasional clean vocals, creating a melancholic and almost spiritual atmosphere. The track breathes that unmistakable Finnish melancholy without sacrificing aggression, making it a strong contribution to this release.
After flipping the record, it is time for Wampyric Rites, and it immediately becomes clear that the Ecuadorians approach things from a different angle. Their atmospheric Black Metal carries a profound connection to the second wave of the 1990s. Shrill, hysterical screams, as if celebrating a fresh bite into a virgin’s neck, float above repetitive, hypnotic guitar passages and primitive drum patterns. The band succeeds in conjuring a raw, nocturnal atmosphere that strongly recalls obscure South American underground releases from decades past, without ever sounding like a mere nostalgic imitation.
This split therefore feels far more substantial than just two isolated tracks pressed onto one piece of vinyl. Instead, it comes across as a carefully assembled meeting between two distant continents united by a shared devotion to dark and atmospheric Black Metal. Both Dark Divination and Wampyric Rites bring enough individuality to keep the release engaging, while the overarching atmosphere ties everything together perfectly. A delicious slice of vinyl for devotees of melancholic and occult Black Metal.

Met een afstand van ruwweg 10.000 kilometer tussen beide landen lijkt dit op papier misschien een onwaarschijnlijke samenwerking, maar de Finse formatie Dark Divination en het Ecuadoriaanse Wampyric Rites vonden elkaar via het Portugese label Signal Rex. Het resultaat van deze duistere connectie is een sfeervolle split-7” waarop beide bands hun eigen interpretatie van atmosferische Black Metal presenteren.

Melodramatische gitaarlijnen, ijzige melodieën en subtiele toetsenpartijen worden gecombineerd met sporadische cleane zang, wat zorgt voor een melancholische en haast spirituele sfeer. Het nummer ademt die typische Finse melancholie zonder aan agressie in te boeten en vormt een sterke bijdrage aan deze release.
Na het omdraaien van de plaat is het de beurt aan Wampyric Rites, en meteen wordt duidelijk dat de Ecuadorianen een heel andere benadering kiezen. Hun atmosferische Black Metal ademt een diepe verbondenheid met de tweede golf van de jaren negentig. IJl, hysterisch gekrijs, alsof een verse beet in een maagdelijke hals ritueel gevierd wordt , zweeft boven repetitieve, hypnotiserende gitaarpartijen en primitieve drumstructuren. De band weet een rauwe, nachtelijke sfeer neer te zetten die sterk doet denken aan obscure Zuid-Amerikaanse undergroundreleases uit vervlogen tijden, zonder daarbij als een simpele nostalgische kopie te klinken.
Deze split voelt dan ook niet als zomaar twee losse nummers op één plaat, maar als een zorgvuldig samengestelde ontmoeting tussen twee verschillende continenten die elkaar vinden in een gedeelde liefde voor duistere, atmosferische Black Metal. Zowel Dark Divination als Wampyric Rites brengen voldoende eigen identiteit mee om deze release interessant te houden, terwijl de overkoepelende sfeer mooi samenhangt. Een smakelijk plakje vinyl voor liefhebbers van melancholische en occult getinte Black Metal.
