The split release remains a beautiful medium. Some bands deliberately avoid the concept, yet in my opinion it is an excellent way for listeners to discover two (or more) bands for the price of one. A split can also create an intriguing interplay between styles, atmospheres, and approaches within the same genre.
That is certainly the case here: Finnish kvlt outfit Witchcraft and Italian experimental, synthetic black metallers Blackstream have joined forces for a collaborative release. The result is a split LP recently issued by the Zeeland-based label Wolfkult Religion, an imprint that continues to strengthen its presence within the underground scene.
The first thing that immediately catches the eye is the cover artwork. We are presented with a distinctly old-school layout depicting several nude women engaged in what appears to be an occult ritual, set against a backdrop strongly reminiscent of the 1970s. The aesthetic breathes exploitation and retro-esotericism: grainy, slightly faded, and deliberately provocative. It is a visual nod to an era when controversy and mysticism went hand in hand, and yes, here too it is clear: sex sells.
Yet it is more than mere shock value. The artwork aligns seamlessly with the themes and atmosphere both bands evoke musically: ritualistic, dark, and uncompromising. This split therefore represents not only a collaboration between two geographically distant acts, but also a fusion of aesthetics and ideology within today’s underground black metal scene.
Witchcraft delivers a 2024 rehearsal recording on this release. Do not expect polished production or a carefully balanced mix, but rather seven raw, noisy, and relentlessly savage black metal tracks. The atmosphere is primal and unfiltered, as if you are standing in the rehearsal room while the amplifiers are pushed to their absolute limit.
As a fitting bonus, we are treated to a cover of Nocturnal Evil, originally by Beherit. This is far from a random choice: Black Moon Necromancer of Hades has been an active member of the resurrected Beherit for several years now, making the homage both logical and meaningful. Witchcraft convincingly unleashes their trademark “Hexcrafting Metal of Beastly Death”: primitive, filthy, unpolished, and deeply rooted in the underground. This is music that consciously distances itself from accessibility — raw, ugly, and certainly not for everyone.
The same uncompromising spirit continues on the B-side, where Blackstream makes its appearance. Their self-described “Occult Synthetic Black Metal” can be defined as black metal enriched with prominent use of analog keyboards. The result is a strange, almost ritualistic soundscape in which icy synth layers merge with harsh instrumentation and incantatory vocals.
Again, this is highly niche material and far from easy listening. The experimental approach makes it distinctive and at times even unsettling, yet that very quality is its strength. Not everyone will appreciate it, but this writer certainly enjoys a solid dose of unrefined sonic chaos.
All in all, a remarkable release that is absolutely worth your time and money. I managed to secure the beautiful red vinyl edition, but be quick, copies are limited and won’t last forever.

De split-release blijft een prachtig medium. Sommige bands gaan dit concept echter nadrukkelijk uit de weg, terwijl het naar mijn mening juist een uitstekende manier is om als luisteraar direct twee (of meer) bands te ontdekken voor de prijs van één. Bovendien kan een split zorgen voor een interessante wisselwerking tussen stijlen, sferen en benaderingen binnen hetzelfde genre.
Zo ook in dit geval: de Finse kvltband Witchcraft en de Italiaanse experimentele, synthetische blackmetallers Blackstream sloegen de handen ineen voor een gezamenlijke release. Het resultaat is een split-LP die onlangs verscheen via het Zeeuwse label Wolfkult Religion, een imprint dat zich steeds nadrukkelijker profileert binnen de undergroundscene.
Het eerste wat in het oog springt, is ongetwijfeld de hoes. We krijgen een uitgesproken oldschoollayout voorgeschoteld, waarin meerdere naakte vrouwen te zien zijn die deelnemen aan een ogenschijnlijk occult ritueel, gesitueerd in een setting die sterk doet denken aan de jaren zeventig. De esthetiek ademt exploitation en retro-esoterie: korrelig, licht vervaagd en doelbewust provocatief. Het is een visuele knipoog naar een tijdperk waarin controverse en mystiek hand in hand gingen , en ja, ook hier geldt onmiskenbaar: sex sells.
Toch is het meer dan louter effectbejag. De hoes sluit naadloos aan bij de thematiek en sfeer die beide bands muzikaal neerzetten: ritualistisch, duister en compromisloos. Daarmee vormt deze split niet alleen een samenwerking tussen twee geografisch ver uiteenliggende acts, maar ook een samensmelting van esthetiek en ideologie binnen de hedendaagse underground blackmetalscene.
Witchcraft serveert ons op deze split een rehearsal-opname uit 2024. Verwacht hier dus geen gepolijste productie of zorgvuldig uitgebalanceerde mix, maar zeven rauwe, ruisende en compromisloos snoeiharde blackmetaltracks. De sfeer is primair en ongefilterd, alsof je midden in de oefenruimte staat terwijl de versterkers op barsten staan.
Als kers op de taart krijgen we een cover van Beherit’s klassieker Nocturnal Evil voorgeschoteld. Dat is allerminst een willekeurige keuze: Black Moon Necromancer of Hades is sinds enkele jaren actief als lid van het herrezen Beherit, waardoor deze hommage niet alleen logisch, maar ook betekenisvol aanvoelt. Witchcraft zet hun kenmerkende “Hexcrafting Metal of Beastly Death” overtuigend neer: primitief, smerig, ongepolijst en diepgeworteld in de underground. Dit is muziek die bewust afstand neemt van toegankelijkheid — rauw, vies en zeker niet aan iedereen besteed.
Diezelfde compromisloze houding vinden we terug op de B-zijde van de plaat, waar het Italiaanse Blackstream zijn opwachting maakt. Hun zelfverklaarde “Occult Synthetic Black Metal” laat zich omschrijven als black metal waarin analoge keyboards een prominente rol spelen. Het resultaat is een bevreemdende, haast ritualistische klankwereld waarin kille synthlagen samensmelten met bezwerende vocalen.
Ook dit is uitgesproken niche en verre van hapklaar. De experimenteerdrift maakt het geheel eigenzinnig en soms zelfs ontregelend, maar juist daarin schuilt de kracht. Niet iedereen zal hier warm voor lopen, maar ondergetekende kan een flinke dosis ongepolijste herrie absoluut waarderen.
Een apart plaatje dus die zeker de moeite of prijs waard is om eens te checken, ik heb de mooie rode vinyl versie weten te bemachtigen maat wees snel want veel zijn er niet.
