A first encounter has to be crushing. That must have been exactly what Decrepit Altar had in mind while creating Egregious Defilement. With this twenty minute debut EP, the Croatian band pulls it off effortlessly. Three lumbering death doom compositions drag you slowly but relentlessly into a black, rotting swamp.
Behind Decrepit Altar are clearly experienced musicians from the Croatian underground. They are also active in bands such as Metuzalem, which draws from the same obscure well. I am not very familiar with the Croatian scene, but this is without a doubt a very pleasant introduction.
Even before the first note is played, the atmosphere is set by the black and white cover art. A damp crypt filled with candles, skulls and shadows, crowned by an almost illegible logo. You know exactly what to expect, and the band does not disappoint. Decrepit Altar blends cavernous death metal with painfully slow and bleak funeral doom. On their Bandcamp they describe it themselves as “atavistic cavernous moss ridden death metal of doom”. That description fits perfectly. The EP opens with the sound of dripping water, as if you are entering a cave. Hazy textures and swelling feedback slowly build tension. Then the low tuned guitars strike, heavy as lead and deeply threatening. Dissonance takes your breath away. Suffocating, exactly how this kind of music should sound. The slow, dragging drums pull you deeper into the mire, while the riffs crawl under your skin like maggots in an open wound.
The production is clear and massive without ever becoming clogged. The bass provides a crushing foundation while rumbling aggressively through the mix. The guitars sound dark brown. Not like an awkward fart, but like diarrhea with chunks. This fits perfectly with the deep, subterranean gutturals. From time to time an ominous lead guitar emerges, like a torch flickering in total darkness. The drums also deserve special mention. Everything sounds tight and controlled. I can say this from experience: playing extremely slow and tight is often harder than blasting at full speed, and here it is executed flawlessly.
In terms of atmosphere and intent, Decrepit Altar operates in the same realm as Incantation and Dead Congregation, sharing that hollow and oppressive cavernous sound. At times the music drifts toward pure funeral doom, but it never becomes as atmospheric as bands like Shape of Despair. Decrepit Altar always remains filthy, as if you are wandering through a damp crypt with moss and fungi creeping along the walls. Where some doom bands sink into sheer sleep inducing dullness, Decrepit Altar manages to keep my eyes open thanks to constant variation. Tempo and mood keep shifting without ever feeling forced.
As a debut, Egregious Defilement presents a band with a clear vision and enormous potential. Bring on that full length!

De eerste kennismaking móét verpletterend zijn. Dat zal Decrepit Altar ongetwijfeld gedacht hebben tijdens het maken van Egregious Defilement. Met deze twintig minuten durende debuut EP slaagt de Kroatische band daar moeiteloos in. Drie logge death-doom composities slepen je langzaam maar onverbiddelijk een zwart, rottend moeras in.
Achter Decrepit Altar zitten hoorbaar ervaren muzikanten uit de Kroatische underground. Ze zijn ook actief in onder andere Metuzalem, een band die uit hetzelfde obscure vaatje tapt. Ik ken weinig van de Kroatische scene, maar dit is zonder twijfel een aangename kennismaking.
Nog voor de eerste noot klinkt, wordt de sfeer al bepaald door de zwart witte cover art. Een vochtige crypte vol kaarsen, schedels en schaduwen, met een haast onleesbaar logo. Je weet wat je kunt verwachten en de band stelt niet teleur. Decrepit Altar vermengt hier cavernous death metal met stronttrage, sombere funeral doom. Op hun Bandcamp omschrijven ze het zelf als “atavistic cavernous moss ridden death metal of doom”. Dat dekt de lading perfect. De EP opent met het geluid van waterdruppels, alsof je een grot betreedt. Mistige klanken en aanzwellende feedback bouwen spanning op. Dan slaan de laaggestemde gitaren toe, loodzwaar en dreigend. Dissonantie beneemt je de adem. Verstikkend, precies zoals deze muziek hoort te klinken. De trage en slepende drums trekken je steeds dieper het slijk in en de riffs kruipen onder de huid als maden in een open wond.
De productie is helder en massief zonder dicht te slibben. De bas legt een loodzware fundering en snijdt tegelijk ronkend door de mix. De gitaren klinken donkerbruin. Niet als een scheet die dwars zit, maar als diarree met brokjes. Dit sluit naadloos aan op de diepe putgrunts. Af en toe duikt er een onheilspellende lead op, als een fakkel in totale duisternis. Ook de drums verdienen een aparte vermelding. Alles klinkt strak en gecontroleerd. Ik kan het zelf beamen: heel traag én strak spelen is vaak moeilijker dan snel rammen, en hier wordt dat perfect uitgevoerd.
Qua sfeer en intentie bevindt Decrepit Altar zich in hetzelfde rijk als Incantation en Dead Congregation, met die holle en zware cavernous sound. Soms schuift de muziek richting pure funeral doom, maar het wordt nooit zo atmosferisch als bij bijvoorbeeld Shape of Despair. Decrepit Altar blijft smerig klinken, alsof je rondwaart in een vochtige crypte met mos en schimmels op de muren. Waar sommige doom bands verzanden in slaapverwekkendheid, weet Decrepit Altar mijn oogleden gelukkig open te houden met al hun variatie. Tempo en sfeer verschuiven continu zonder geforceerd aan te voelen.
Als debuut laat Egregious Defilement een band horen met duidelijke visie en enorme potentie. Laat die full length maar komen.
