Verletzen, which means “to wound” in German, is a band whose name I had seen floating around before, but one I had never actually taken the time to listen to. Then again, keeping up with every new release these days is practically impossible; there is simply too much music being released. Seeing the name, I automatically assumed they were a German band. As it turns out, nothing could be further from the truth, as this trio actually hails from Wales.
With a pretty striking cover artwork and a title like Usurping The Throne Under The Crown of Blasphemy, they certainly managed to grab my attention. Musically, the album delivers traditional Scandinavian-inspired second-wave Black Metal wrapped in a satisfyingly raw and gritty production. Featuring two intro tracks and eight proper songs, the album clocks in at just over 31 minutes, making it feel a little on the short side.
The band, consisting of bassist Azog, drummer Demetae, and guitarist/vocalist Nazgul, has been active since 2016. Over the years, the trio released a demo and two EPs before finally unveiling their debut full-length, The Blackened Crusade, in 2023. Now, three years later, Usurping The Throne Under The Crown of Blasphemy serves as their sophomore effort, adding another chapter to their still relatively modest but steadily growing discography.
Some personal highlights include the excellent, though far too brief, “Under the Crown of Blasphemy,” the fiercely riff-driven “Ordo Draconum,” and “The Shadowkeep,” which barrels forward like a runaway steam train. These tracks perfectly showcase what Verletzen does best: aggressive, compelling Black Metal packed with genuine energy and conviction. The combination of razor-sharp riffs, relentless drumming, and a dark, menacing atmosphere allows these songs to stand out effortlessly from the rest of the album.
All in all, Usurping The Throne Under The Crown of Blasphemy is a highly successful release. Unfortunately, no vinyl edition has been announced so far, with the album currently available only on CD and cassette through Wulfhere Productions. While the running time leaves you wishing for a few more tracks, that is ultimately a minor complaint. The quality of the material more than makes up for its brevity, resulting in an album that never overstays its welcome and practically demands an immediate second spin once it reaches its conclusion.

Verletzen, oftewel verwonden in het Duits, is een band waarvan ik de naam al eens voorbij heb zien komen, maar waar ik nog nooit echt naar geluisterd had. Dat is tegenwoordig ook nauwelijks bij te houden; er verschijnt zo ontzettend veel nieuwe muziek dat je onmogelijk alles kunt horen. Bij het zien van de naam ging ik er automatisch van uit dat het om een Duitse band zou gaan. Niets blijkt echter minder waar, want dit trio is afkomstig uit Wales en niet uit Duitsland.
Met een best wel gave hoes en een titel als Usurping The Throne Under The Crown of Blasphemy heb je mijn aandacht wel te pakken. Traditionele Scandinavisch klinkende second wave Black Metal met een lekkere rauwe rand gegoten een lekkere rauwe en grittige productie. Met twee intro’s en een achttal nummers in amper 31 minuten is hij wel een beetje aan de korte kant.
De band, bestaande uit bassist Azog, drummer Demetae en gitarist/zanger Nazgul, is sinds 2016 actief. In de jaren die volgden bracht het drietal een demo en twee EP’s uit, voordat in 2023 eindelijk het debuutalbum The Blackened Crusade verscheen. Nu, drie jaar later, ligt met Usurping The Throne Under The Crown of Blasphemy de tweede langspeler klaar, waarmee Verletzen een nieuw hoofdstuk toevoegt aan hun nog relatief bescheiden, maar gestaag groeiende discografie.
Enkele persoonlijke hoogtepunten zijn het geweldige, maar veel te korte “Under the Crown of Blasphemy”, “Ordo Draconum” met zijn ontzettend felle en effectieve riffs, en “The Shadowkeep”, dat over je heen dendert als een op hol geslagen stoomtrein. Het zijn stuk voor stuk nummers die de kracht van Verletzen uitstekend illustreren: agressief, meeslepend en voorzien van een sterke dosis onvervalste Black Metal-energie. Vooral de combinatie van razende riffs, stuwende drums en een onheilspellende sfeer zorgt ervoor dat deze nummers zich moeiteloos onderscheiden van de rest van het album.
Al met al is Usurping The Throne Under The Crown of Blasphemy een zeer geslaagde plaat. Jammer genoeg is er vooralsnog geen vinyluitgave aangekondigd; het album verschijnt momenteel alleen op cd en cassette via Wulfhere Productions. Met een relatief bescheiden speelduur had de plaat misschien wat langer mogen zijn, maar dat nemen we dan maar voor lief. De kwaliteit van het materiaal maakt veel goed, waardoor het album geen moment verveelt en juist uitnodigt om na afloop meteen nog een keer op te zetten.
