Review: Tornekrans – Silent Whispers Echo From Forbidden Realms

English:

Tornekrans needs very little time to make its intentions clear. After the short, folk-tinged intro Ultreia, the door is kicked wide open and an assault begins that barely comes to a halt for the next thirty-five minutes. Yet it is neither the speed nor the rawness that ultimately leaves the strongest impression on Silent Whispers Echo From Forbidden Realms. Beneath all that violence, there is a surprising amount of melody waiting to be uncovered.

Tornekrans is the work of Norwegian musician Torkus, who handles all instruments and vocals. Following the Ravnenes Kall demo from 2024, this is his first full-length album, and although its foundations remain deeply rooted in traditional Norwegian Black Metal, it never feels as if rawness alone is supposed to carry the record. The production is sharp and unpolished, yet clear enough to give the different guitar lines, and even the bass, enough room to breathe.

Døpt På Blodets Alter immediately sets the standard after the intro. The drums charge forward, the vocals are spat across them and the guitars stubbornly circle around recurring patterns. Tornekrans makes extensive use of repetition, but subtle changes within the riffs ensure that something is constantly shifting. The approach is fairly primitive, but certainly not thoughtless.

And then there are those melodies. This is where Silent Whispers Echo From Forbidden Realms separates itself from so many records whose main reason for existence seems to be the reproduction of an old Norwegian sound. Tracks such as The Earth Drinks The Blood We Spill, I Nattens Favn and The Sun Sinks Into Oblivion’s Abyss contain guitar lines with an almost folk-like quality. At times they even sound remarkably proud and triumphant, while everything around them continues to storm ahead without hesitation.

That contrast works extremely well. The melodies do not make the music friendlier or more accessible; instead, they give the fury an identity of its own. Especially when one of those simple guitar lines has repeated itself enough times to become firmly lodged in your head, it becomes clear that there is much more happening behind that initial wall of noise than first impressions might suggest.

Tåke & Mysterier shows that Tornekrans can also stand its ground without relying heavily on those folk-inspired melodies. The tremolo riffs are vicious and repetitive, while the vocals seem to push even more aggressively through the mix. It is the kind of track that has no interest in technical showmanship, instead taking a single idea and sharpening it until it hits exactly where it needs to.

At the same time, this also reveals the album’s main weakness. Torkus keeps his foot firmly on the accelerator for almost the entire record. Most of the songs follow comparable structures and are roughly similar in length. On a first listen, the middle section can therefore begin to merge into one continuous stream of drums, tremolo picking and rasping vocals. A few moments where the pace was drastically reduced might have given the album a little more dynamic range.

Strangely enough, however, that problem becomes less apparent with repeated listens. Individual riffs slowly begin to emerge, and songs that initially seemed to blend into one another gradually develop their own identities. Once again, it is mainly the melodic passages that provide the necessary anchor points.

With Silent Whispers Echo From Forbidden Realms, Tornekrans makes no attempt to modernise anything, let alone reinvent it. Torkus takes an old and familiar foundation and drives straight through it with considerable conviction. What makes the difference are the melodies that continually rise from beneath the violence.

For thirty-five minutes, Tornekrans charges forward with barely a glance backwards. Perhaps it remains in the same gear a little too often, but when the final notes of Vinden Visker Sin Gamle Sang disappear, it is neither the blast beats nor the raw production that stay with you. It is those crooked, cold and occasionally almost triumphant melodies that eventually pull you back into the record.

Nederlands:

In nummers als The Earth Drinks The Blood We Spill, I Nattens Favn en The Sun Sinks Into Oblivion’s Abyss duiken gitaarlijnen op die bijna folkachtig aandoen.

Vijfendertig minuten lang dendert Tornekrans bijna zonder omkijken vooruit.
