A snow-covered castle ruin is not exactly the first image that comes to mind when thinking of a band from the usually sun-drenched city of Barcelona. Then again, even the Spanish kingdom sees its fair share of snow from time to time.
With Channeling the Egregore, the duo delivered a remarkably strong debut in 2024 that immediately caught the attention of the underground scene. Now its successor has arrived, released through the Belgian Medieval Prophecy Records, a label that has increasingly become synonymous with high-quality and authentic Black Metal releases over the past few years. And yes, yet another review from that label. Coincidence? Not really. A few weeks ago, MPR showcased an entire batch of new releases on the Rites of Pestilence YouTube channel. Normally, these promotional presentations tend to pass us by, but this time that was simply impossible. Every single release stood out as a strong record worthy of attention.
The Spanish Black Metal scene is undoubtedly one of the most interesting European scenes to explore, especially for those who have not yet ventured into it. In recent years, more and more bands from the Iberian Peninsula have managed to make an international impact, with Stygian Storm standing out as one of the most striking examples. While Spain is not typically associated with the frozen landscapes that often inspire the genre, bands like this prove that atmosphere, conviction, and craftsmanship matter far more than geography. With a sound that feels both majestic and relentless, Stygian Storm has quickly distinguished itself from the crowd and established itself as one of the most promising acts in today’s underground Black Metal scene.
Compared to their debut album, the most noticeable aspect is the band’s progression, and that goes far beyond the production, which has undoubtedly taken a significant step forward. The songwriting itself has matured as well. The compositions feel more refined, the transitions more natural, and the arrangements richer in detail. While the debut already hinted at considerable potential, this follow-up exudes greater confidence and maturity. The duo has further sharpened its identity and now delivers its artistic vision with even greater conviction.
The music is epic and filled with a sense of grandeur, exactly what this style of Black Metal demands. Majestic melodies, expansive compositions, and a strong atmospheric foundation give the album a truly elevated character that effortlessly draws the listener in. It is music that dares to sound grandiose without sacrificing intensity, and it is precisely this combination of heroic scope and raw aggression that makes this corner of the genre so compelling when executed properly. Stygian Storm clearly understands this and manages to maintain that monumental atmosphere throughout the entire album.
Simply put, this is a massive record and one that I will gladly add to my personal collection. From beginning to end, it remains engaging and leaves a lasting impression. For fans of epic yet raw Black Metal, this is essential listening. Furthermore, it already feels like the kind of release that will feature prominently on many year-end lists. Anyone compiling their favorites for the end of the year would be wise to keep this one firmly on their radar.

Een met sneeuw bedekte kasteelruïne is niet bepaald het eerste beeld dat in mij opkomt bij een band uit het doorgaans zonovergoten Barcelona. Toch zal ook in het Spaanse koninkrijk af en toe sneeuw vallen.
Met “Channeling the Egregore” leverde het tweetal in 2024 al een bijzonder sterk debuut af dat binnen de undergroundscene meteen de aandacht trok. Nu ligt de opvolger klaar, uitgebracht via het Belgische Medieval Prophecy Records, een label dat de laatste jaren steeds vaker garant staat voor kwalitatieve en authentieke Black Metal releases. En ja, alweer een recensie van dat label. Toeval? Niet echt. Enkele weken geleden smeedde MPR namelijk een hele reeks nieuwe releases samen in een uitgebreide presentatie op het YouTube-kanaal van Rites of Pestilence. Normaal gezien glipt zo’n promotionele batch wat langs ons heen, maar deze keer was dat onmogelijk: stuk voor stuk betrof het indrukwekkende platen die onmiddellijk bleven hangen.
De Spaanse Black Metal-scène is zonder twijfel een van de meest interessante Europese scenes om eens grondig uit te diepen, zeker voor wie dat nog niet gedaan heeft. De afgelopen jaren hebben steeds meer bands uit het Iberische land internationaal indruk weten te maken, waarbij Stygian Storm zonder twijfel tot de meest opvallende namen behoort. Hoewel Spanje doorgaans niet wordt geassocieerd met de ijzige landschappen die vaak als inspiratiebron dienen binnen het genre, bewijzen bands als deze dat sfeer, overtuiging en vakmanschap belangrijker zijn dan geografische ligging. Met een geluid dat zowel majestueus als meedogenloos aanvoelt, heeft Stygian Storm zich in korte tijd weten te onderscheiden van de massa en zich ontwikkeld tot een van de meest veelbelovende namen binnen de hedendaagse undergroundscene.
Vergeleken met hun debuutalbum horen we vooral een duidelijke vorm van progressie, en dan hebben we het niet alleen over de productie, die zonder enige twijfel een flinke stap vooruit heeft gezet. Ook op compositorisch vlak lijkt de band gegroeid te zijn. De nummers klinken doordachter, de overgangen vloeiender en de arrangementen rijker aan detail. Waar het debuut al veel potentie liet horen, straalt deze opvolger meer zelfvertrouwen en maturiteit uit. Het duo lijkt zijn eigen identiteit verder te hebben aangescherpt en weet zijn muzikale visie nu nog overtuigender over te brengen.
De muziek klinkt episch en ademt een gevoel van grandeur uit, precies zoals het hoort binnen deze stijl van Black Metal. De majestueuze melodieën, weidse composities en sfeervolle opbouw geven het geheel een verheven karakter dat de luisteraar moeiteloos meesleept. Het is muziek die groots durft te klinken zonder haar kracht te verliezen, en juist die combinatie van heroïsche allure en rauwe intensiteit maakt dit genre zo aantrekkelijk wanneer het goed wordt uitgevoerd. Stygian Storm begrijpt dat als geen ander en weet die monumentale sfeer gedurende het hele album overtuigend vast te houden.
Dit is simpelweg een dijk van een plaat, eentje die ik persoonlijk zonder aarzelen aan mijn collectie zal toevoegen. Van begin tot eind weet het album te boeien en laat het een indruk achter die niet snel vervaagt. Voor liefhebbers van epische en toch rauwe Black Metal is dit dan ook verplichte kost. Bovendien lijkt het me nu al een release die tegen het einde van het jaar hoge ogen zal gooien in menig jaarlijst. Wie zijn eindejaarsfavorieten graag tijdig noteert, doet er verstandig aan deze alvast op de radar te zetten.
