Over the past decade, Pilori has steadily established itself as one of those bands that stubbornly refuses to fit neatly into a single category. Emerging from the French underground, the quartet has forged a distinctive sound where rage, despair, and social alienation converge. With Sans Adieu, their third full-length album, they prove that uncompromising music can still possess remarkable depth and nuance.
From the opening moments of Lèse-majesté, it becomes clear that Pilori has no interest in lengthy introductions. The riffs cut through the speakers immediately, the drums drive each song forward with relentless force, and the vocals sound as though every syllable is being torn from the lungs. Yet this is far more than an exercise in speed and aggression. Beneath the violence lies a carefully constructed dynamic where black metal, crust, hardcore, and subtle industrial textures blend into a remarkably cohesive whole.
That fusion is precisely what makes Sans Adieu so compelling. Rather than placing different influences side by side, Pilori makes them feel like natural extensions of one another. The hardcore elements give the music a visceral physicality, while the black metal riffs provide the album with its cold, oppressive atmosphere. The crust influences inject a constant sense of urgency, ensuring the tension rarely subsides.
The production is arguably the band’s strongest to date. It retains enough rawness to preserve its underground character while offering sufficient clarity for every instrument to make its presence felt. The guitars remain abrasive without becoming muddy, the bass cuts through the mix with authority, and the drums deliver tremendous impact without overwhelming the compositions. Even at its most chaotic, the album remains remarkably focused.
The instrumental title track, Sans Adieu, stands out as one of the album’s most memorable moments. After the relentless assault of the preceding songs, Pilori briefly shifts its focus toward atmosphere. Dark ambient passages, subtle cello arrangements, and industrial soundscapes create an almost cinematic sense of desolation, evoking abandoned factories and lifeless urban ruins rather than familiar metal clichés. That brief moment of restraint makes the following La présence des absents hit with even greater emotional weight, resulting in one of the strongest compositions on the record.
The album is not entirely without flaws. Because Pilori sustains such an intense level of energy throughout, several tracks initially blur together. Only after repeated listens do the individual songs begin to reveal their own distinct identities. It is hardly a major criticism, but it does prevent Sans Adieu from making an immediate and unforgettable impact.
Even so, admiration ultimately outweighs criticism. Pilori demonstrates that extreme music does not have to choose between raw aggression and thoughtful songwriting. Sans Adieu is an album that never attempts to please the listener, instead demanding complete immersion in a world of tension, desperation, and unrelenting intensity. It may not reinvent the genre, but it is a thoroughly convincing release that further strengthens the reputation of the French underground scene.

Pilori heeft zich in de afgelopen tien jaar ontwikkeld tot een van die bands die zich hardnekkig onttrekken aan hokjesdenken. Vanuit de Franse underground bouwde het viertal gestaag aan een eigen geluid waarin woede, uitzichtloosheid en maatschappelijke vervreemding samenkomen. Met Sans Adieu, het derde volledige album, laat de band horen dat compromisloosheid niet hoeft te betekenen dat nuance verloren gaat.
Vanaf opener Lèse-majesté is duidelijk dat Pilori geen tijd verspilt aan lange introducties. De riffs snijden direct door de speakers, de drums jagen de nummers onverbiddelijk vooruit en de vocalen klinken alsof iedere lettergreep met de laatste restjes adem wordt uitgespuugd. Toch is dit geen plaat die uitsluitend draait om snelheid of agressie. Onder het geweld schuilt een doordachte dynamiek waarin black metal, crust, hardcore en zelfs een vleug industriële kilte moeiteloos in elkaar overlopen.
Juist die kruisbestuiving maakt Sans Adieu interessant. Waar veel bands verschillende stijlen simpelweg naast elkaar leggen, voelt het hier alsof alle invloeden uit dezelfde bron voortkomen. De hardcore-elementen geven de muziek een fysieke impact, terwijl de blackmetalriffs voor de nodige duisternis zorgen. De crustinvloeden voegen een constante nervositeit toe die ervoor zorgt dat de spanning nauwelijks verslapt.
Ook productioneel heeft Pilori een flinke stap gezet. De opname klinkt rauw genoeg om zijn ondergrondse karakter te behouden, maar tegelijkertijd helder genoeg om alle details tot hun recht te laten komen. De gitaren behouden hun schurende rand, de bas blijft hoorbaar aanwezig en de drums klinken krachtig zonder de rest van het geheel te overschreeuwen. Dat zorgt ervoor dat de chaos gecontroleerd blijft, hoe intens de muziek ook wordt.
Het instrumentale titelnummer Sans Adieu vormt misschien wel het meest verrassende moment van de plaat. Waar de voorgaande nummers vooral de aanval kiezen, laat Pilori hier ruimte voor verstilling. Donkere ambient, subtiele cello en industriële texturen creëren een beklemmende sfeer die eerder aan een verlaten fabriek of een uitgebrande stad doet denken dan aan een traditionele metalplaat. Die korte adempauze vergroot vervolgens de impact van het daaropvolgende La présence des absents, een van de sterkste composities van het album.
Niet alles is echter even memorabel. Doordat Pilori vrijwel voortdurend een hoge intensiteit aanhoudt, vloeien enkele nummers tijdens de eerste luisterbeurten enigszins in elkaar over. Pas na meerdere draaibeurten beginnen de individuele composities echt hun eigen identiteit prijs te geven. Dat is geen groot minpunt, maar wel iets wat voorkomt dat Sans Adieu direct een onuitwisbare indruk achterlaat.
Toch overheerst vooral bewondering. Pilori bewijst dat extreme muziek niet hoeft te kiezen tussen brute kracht en compositorische intelligentie. Sans Adieu is een album dat de luisteraar geen moment probeert te behagen, maar juist uitnodigt om zich onder te dompelen in een wereld vol spanning, wanhoop en ongeremde energie. Geen revolutionaire plaat, wel een bijzonder overtuigende die de Franse underground opnieuw stevig op de kaart zet.
