Swedish Black Metal project Arckanum was founded in 1992 by Johan Lahger, better known as Shamaatae, and developed into one of the most distinctive acts within Scandinavian Black Metal. With albums such as Fran Marder (1995), Kostogher (1997), and Kampen (1998), he established a raw, primitive style strongly influenced by nature mysticism. Following the release of Den förstfödde in 2017, things remained quiet regarding new studio material for quite some time. That silence has now been broken with Beswærilsin, Arckanum’s tenth studio album, scheduled for release on 31 October 2026 through Darkness Shall Rise Productions. Featuring eleven compositions and a running time of over an hour, this is certainly no modest return.
For Shamaatae, Arckanum has never been merely a musical project. His work is closely connected to Thursatru, Chaos-Gnosticism, and the spiritual significance he attaches to Norse mythology. These beliefs once again form the foundation of Beswærilsin. The lyrics are written in Old Swedish and draw inspiration from ancient Scandinavian poetry and traditional Swedish black magic. Music, lyrics, and artwork form a ritualistic whole, with the compositions serving as invocations and expressions of his personal worldview.
The new album is presented as the beginning of a third phase in Arckanum’s history. Fortunately, this does not mean a forced attempt to relive the past. Shamaatae builds upon his familiar musical foundations while giving the material enough power and dynamics to sound entirely relevant in 2026. Arckanum’s primitive, unpolished character remains firmly intact, but the compositions possess a directness that makes the music particularly convincing.
Our first introduction to the new material came in June with the EP Motestandarin, featuring Skæpna Ær Krigh and Anskoti. Both compositions also appear on the album. This was followed by Mz Fianda Raþi, the opening track of Beswærilsin, accompanied by a music video. The song immediately sets the tone with fierce guitar work, a high tempo, and an aggressive approach that leaves little room for compromise.
The production is one of the album’s major strengths. Arckanum sounds raw, wild, and unpolished without allowing everything to collapse into an impenetrable wall of noise. The guitars possess a vicious sharpness, while the rhythm section relentlessly drives the compositions forward. The combination of primitive aggression and clearly audible dynamics works exceptionally well. Shamaatae obviously has no interest in a modern, clinically polished production. The music is meant to scrape, bite, and create a sense of unease, and in that respect, he succeeds remarkably well.
What makes Beswærilsin so convincing is the way its aggression is combined with Arckanum’s characteristic atmosphere. The riffs frequently take on an almost hypnotic quality, while the melodic lines create a dark undercurrent. The music remains in constant motion, with tempo changes and shifts in intensity preventing the compositions from becoming monotonous. As a result, the album never sounds like an endless succession of aggressive passages, but rather a carefully constructed whole in which every track has its own place.
With eleven tracks and a running time of almost 63 minutes, Beswærilsin demands a considerable amount of attention from the listener. Nevertheless, its length is hardly an issue. Compositions such as Utgarþzeþer, Gyghra Hirþi, and the almost nine-minute closing track Twæþursaspa demonstrate that Shamaatae has more than enough ideas to keep even the longer pieces interesting. The music remains intense throughout, but offers sufficient variation to maintain the tension across the entire album.
The thematic background remains unmistakably Arckanum. The world of the Thursar, cosmic chaos, and resistance against imposed order once again forms the core of the material. While many Black Metal bands use Norse mythology primarily as imagery, for Shamaatae it represents an essential part of his personal philosophy. This conviction gives his music a recognisable identity that is once again strongly present on the new album.
Another major strength is that Beswærilsin never sounds like a musician desperately attempting to recapture his glory days. The aggression feels genuine, the riffs carry plenty of weight, and the compositions develop naturally. Of course, the influence of earlier Arckanum material is clearly recognisable, but that is more of a strength than a limitation. Shamaatae knows exactly where the power of his music lies and feels no need to change his characteristic sound unnecessarily.
At a time when Black Metal is increasingly accompanied by refined productions and technical displays of musicianship, it is refreshing to hear an album that draws its strength primarily from rawness, conviction, and atmosphere. That does not mean Beswærilsin is musically simplistic, however. Beneath its primitive exterior lies a carefully considered combination of riffs, rhythmic shifts, and melodic accents. It is precisely this balance that makes the album so strong.
After nine years without a new studio album, Arckanum returns with a record that does full justice to its extensive discography. Beswærilsin sounds aggressive, dark, and hypnotic, yet offers enough variation and musical depth to remain compelling for well over an hour. The production suits the material perfectly, and Shamaatae demonstrates that his distinctive approach to Black Metal has lost none of its power over the years.
Beswærilsin is therefore much more than a successful comeback. It is an exceptionally strong album that combines Arckanum’s familiar identity with renewed energy and convincing songwriting. Admirers of the earlier records will find plenty to appreciate here, but the album also stands firmly on its own merits. Shamaatae proves that, after all these years, his creative fire is still burning fiercely.

Nederlands:
