The name Messe De Minuit might immediately ring a bell with devotees of Hellenic black metal. In 2019, Greek band Disharmony released an EP bearing exactly that title, also through Iron Bonehead Productions. Whether the Spanish band actually took its name from that release is not confirmed, but considering their shared love for that old Greek sound, it is at least an interesting coincidence.
The people behind Messe De Minuit are hardly strangers to the underground either. Crucifier is involved in bands such as Nigromancer, Stygian Storm and Unholy Black Pentagram, among several others. Perhaps that partly explains why this kind of old-school occult black metal feels so natural here.
Musically, Messe De Minuit have both feet firmly planted in the early ’90s. Varathron, Necromantia and early Rotting Christ are obvious reference points, while the darker and more ritualistic atmosphere of Mortuary Drape also comes to mind. Organs, choirs and synths appear throughout both tracks, not to make the music sound bigger or more polished, but to strengthen its dark and ceremonial character.
Necromantic Night immediately shows how much variation the band can fit into a relatively short track. The tempo shifts constantly, moving naturally between faster sections and slower, heavier passages. Along the way, several seriously heavy riffs give the track plenty of weight. Despite all these changes, everything remains coherent and retains that raw, sinister atmosphere. A very effective guitar solo closes the track and gives it a strong ending.
The title track The Neophyte begins with a spooky, almost horror-like introduction before suddenly picking up speed. It soon drops back into a doomy passage dominated by synths, before going full throttle once again. Especially during these faster sections, the early Rotting Christ and Varathron influence becomes impossible to miss. Once again there is an impressive guitar solo, fitting naturally into the composition rather than feeling like unnecessary technical display.
What makes this EP work so well is that Messe De Minuit do not rely on atmosphere alone. The riffs are strong, the frequent tempo changes keep both tracks moving, and the organs, choirs and synths are used just enough to deepen the occult feeling. When The Neophyte eventually comes to an end with an impressive church organ, it feels like the perfect ceremonial conclusion to this short but remarkably strong release.
A great EP, firmly rooted in the early ’90s without ever feeling like a simple copy of what came before. Definitely worth your time.

De naam Messe De Minuit doet bij liefhebbers van Helleense black metal waarschijnlijk meteen een belletje rinkelen. In 2019 bracht de Griekse band Disharmony namelijk een EP uit met precies die titel, eveneens via Iron Bonehead Productions. Of de Spaanse band daar daadwerkelijk zijn naam vandaan heeft gehaald, is niet bevestigd, maar gezien de gedeelde liefde voor die oude Griekse sound is het op zijn minst een opvallende samenloop van omstandigheden.
Ook qua bezetting bevindt Messe De Minuit zich duidelijk in een bekende ondergrond. Crucifier is onder meer actief in Nigromancer, Stygian Storm en Unholy Black Pentagram. Dat verklaart misschien deels waarom deze vorm van ouderwetse, occulte black metal hier zo vanzelfsprekend klinkt.
Muzikaal staat Messe De Minuit stevig met beide voeten in de vroege jaren 90. Varathron, Necromantia en vroege Rotting Christ zijn duidelijke referentiepunten, terwijl ook de meer occulte en ritualistische sfeer van Mortuary Drape regelmatig om de hoek komt kijken. Orgels, koortjes en synths worden door beide nummers heen gebruikt, maar nergens om de muziek groter of gladder te maken. Ze versterken vooral het donkere, ceremonieel aandoende karakter.
Necromantic Night laat meteen horen hoeveel afwisseling de band in een relatief korte speelduur weet te stoppen. Het tempo wisselt voortdurend en de band beweegt soepel tussen snellere passages en tragere, zwaardere stukken. Tussendoor komen een paar bijzonder dikke riffs voorbij die het nummer flink wat gewicht geven. Ondanks de vele wisselingen blijft alles samenhangend en behoudt het nummer die rauwe, duistere sfeer. Als afsluiting volgt nog een mooie gitaarsolo die het nummer op sterke wijze afrondt.
Het titelnummer The Neophyte opent met een spooky, bijna horrorachtige intro voordat het tempo plotseling omhooggaat. Niet veel later zakt het nummer weer terug naar een doomy passage waarin de synths nadrukkelijk aanwezig zijn, om vervolgens opnieuw vol gas te gaan. Vooral in die snellere stukken komt de invloed van vroege Rotting Christ en Varathron sterk naar voren. Ook hier duikt weer een indrukwekkende solo op die goed in de opbouw past en nergens als overbodig technisch vertoon voelt.
Wat deze EP vooral sterk maakt, is dat Messe De Minuit niet alleen op sfeer leunt. De riffs zijn goed, de tempowisselingen houden beide nummers voortdurend in beweging en de orgels, koortjes en synths worden precies genoeg ingezet om de occulte sfeer verder uit te diepen. Als The Neophyte uiteindelijk eindigt met een indrukwekkend kerkorgel, voelt dat als de perfecte ceremoniële afsluiting van deze korte maar bijzonder sterke release.
Een erg gave EP die duidelijk geworteld is in de vroege jaren 90, zonder aan te voelen als een simpele kopie van wat toen al is gedaan. Absoluut de moeite waard.
