Hailing from the historic city of Rouen, the duo Iffernet now presents its third full-length album. Since their formation in 2018, the band has steadily carved out a name for itself, both in the studio and on stage. Over the past few years, Iffernet has built a solid live reputation, with intense and compelling performances that continue to draw in a growing audience.
With this new release, the duo appears to take the next step in its musical evolution, where experience and ambition converge into a mature and well-crafted whole.
With their tragic take on Black Metal and lyrics steeped in emptiness, bitterness, and a yearning for a definitive end, Iffernet delivers a remarkably strong and immersive album. Despite its heavy thematic weight, the duo succeeds in creating a record that is not only intense and suffocating, but also musically convincing and memorable.
The material largely resides within the doomy to mid-tempo spectrum, a realm I’ve always had a particular fondness for. At some point, you grow older and the need for relentless speed fades; it’s these slower, more dragging passages that tend to carry greater emotional weight and impact.
Vocally, it occasionally brings to mind King Diamond, especially in his more narrative, almost spoken delivery. Perhaps a somewhat elusive comparison, but it’s simply the association that surfaces for me and lingers throughout the listen.
The album is released via the German Vendetta Records on CD and LP. In addition, Breathe Plastic Records handles a cassette edition for the European market, while Fiadh Productions takes care of the CD and cassette releases for fans in the United States.
All in all, this is a strong album that never feels generic or disposable. It carries enough individuality and atmosphere to stand out within the genre. Now it’s just a matter of catching the band live sometime next year, as this feels like music that would truly come alive on stage.

Komend uit het historische Rouen presenteert het duo Iffernet ons inmiddels zijn derde langspeler. Sinds hun oprichting in 2018 heeft de band gestaag aan de weg getimmerd, zowel in de studio als op het podium. In de afgelopen jaren wist Iffernet een solide live-reputatie op te bouwen, waarbij hun intense en overtuigende optredens steeds meer publiek aantrekken.
Met deze nieuwe release lijkt het duo dan ook een volgende stap te zetten in hun muzikale ontwikkeling, waarbij ervaring en ambitie samenkomen in een volwassen en doordacht geheel.
Met hun tragische vorm van Black Metal en teksten die doordrenkt zijn van leegte, verbittering en een verlangen naar een definitief einde, weet Iffernet toch een bijzonder sterk en meeslepend album af te leveren. Ondanks de zwaarmoedige thematiek slaagt het duo erin om een plaat neer te zetten die niet alleen intens en beklemmend is, maar ook muzikaal overtuigt en blijft hangen.
Het geheel blijft grotendeels hangen in het doomy tot midtempo segment, een hoek waar ik zelf altijd wel een zwak voor heb gehad. Op een gegeven moment word je ouder en hoeft het gas er niet per se meer constant vol op te staan; juist die meer gedragen, slepende passages krijgen dan extra zeggingskracht.
Vocaal doet het me hier en daar zelfs denken aan King Diamond, met name in zijn meer verhalende, bijna gesproken voordracht. Misschien een wat ongrijpbare vergelijking, maar het is nu eenmaal de associatie die bij mij naar boven komt en die ergens toch blijft hangen.
De release verschijnt via het Duitse Vendetta Records op cd en lp. Daarnaast verzorgt Breathe Plastic Records een cassetteversie voor de Europese markt, terwijl Fiadh Productions de cd- en cassette-edities voor de Amerikaanse fans op zich neemt.
Al met al een sterk album dat zeker niet als dertien-in-een-dozijn aanvoelt. Het bezit genoeg eigenheid en sfeer om zich te onderscheiden binnen het genre. Nu nog hopen dat we de heren komend jaar ergens live kunnen meepikken, want dit lijkt me bij uitstek muziek die op het podium nog eens extra tot zijn recht komt.
