Novae Militiae has been around for quite some time by now. The French band was formed in 2009 and has never been in much of a hurry. Apocryphon of the Unborn Light is only their third full-length album and arrives six years after Topheth. Perhaps that approach is part of Novae Militiae’s strength: rather than constantly putting out new material, they seem to release something only when there is actually something worth saying.
With six tracks and roughly three quarters of an hour of music, the band takes plenty of time to develop its ideas. Don’t expect Black Metal that immediately goes for the throat through speed alone. Novae Militiae builds its songs gradually. Riffs are given room to breathe, passages flow into one another and the aggression is regularly interrupted by slower sections. This creates a dark, almost spellbinding atmosphere that ultimately proves more important than sheer velocity.
That certainly doesn’t mean Apocryphon of the Unborn Light is a calm record. When the band strikes, it does so with considerable force. The drums can thunder along at a fierce pace, while the vocals hang over the guitars like a filthy layer of grime. Still, it is often the longer, dragging passages that leave the strongest impression. Here the music takes on a ritualistic and threatening character without Novae Militiae having to rely on keyboards or unnecessary decoration to create atmosphere.
The six compositions are fairly similar in length and feel more like chapters of one larger work than completely separate songs. This suits the band’s esoteric and religious themes perfectly. Titles such as Silence of the Seven Trumpets, Beneath the Sealed Heavens and The Final Manifestation already give a pretty good indication of the darkness we are entering. Fortunately, the music actually manages to create that atmosphere rather than simply attaching impressive-sounding titles to a collection of riffs.
The production also works in the album’s favour. Everything sounds powerful enough, but it never becomes excessively polished or modern. There is still plenty of dirt between the guitars, and when several layers begin moving across one another the record develops a wonderfully massive sound. At the same time, there is enough space left in the production to follow what is happening underneath.
At around three quarters of an hour, Apocryphon of the Unborn Light does demand some attention from the listener. This isn’t an album you casually throw on in the background and completely understand after a single listen. The songs are lengthy and the differences between them sometimes lie more in atmosphere and development than in immediately recognizable riffs. You need to be in the mood for that, but give the album some time and it gradually begins to reveal more of itself.
After seventeen years of existence, Novae Militiae has delivered only its third full-length with Apocryphon of the Unborn Light. These Frenchmen are clearly still in no hurry, but there is little wrong with that when the result is this solid. Dark, aggressive and at times thoroughly spellbinding, with enough depth to justify repeated listens. It may not completely blow everything else away, but it is certainly an album that slowly works its way under your skin.

Novae Militiae draait inmiddels alweer een behoorlijke tijd mee. De Franse band werd opgericht in 2009 en heeft er nooit veel haast achter gezet. Apocryphon of the Unborn Light is pas het derde volledige album en volgt zes jaar na Topheth. Misschien is juist die werkwijze wel onderdeel van de kracht van Novae Militiae: geen constante stroom aan materiaal, maar pas iets uitbrengen wanneer er daadwerkelijk iets te vertellen valt.
Met zes nummers en ongeveer drie kwartier speeltijd neemt de band daar op deze plaat uitgebreid de tijd voor. Verwacht daarbij geen Black Metal die je onmiddellijk bij de strot grijpt met alleen maar snelheid. Novae Militiae bouwt zijn nummers langzaam op. Riffs krijgen de ruimte, passages vloeien in elkaar over en tussen de agressie door wordt regelmatig gas teruggenomen. Daardoor ontstaat een donkere, bijna bezwerende sfeer die eigenlijk belangrijker is dan pure snelheid.
Dat betekent overigens niet dat Apocryphon of the Unborn Light een rustige plaat is. Wanneer de band uithaalt, gebeurt dat behoorlijk fel. De drums kunnen flink doordenderen en de vocalen liggen als een smerige laag over de gitaren heen. Toch zijn het vooral de langere, slepende passages die blijven hangen. Daar krijgt de muziek iets ritueels en dreigends zonder dat Novae Militiae daarvoor voortdurend naar keyboards of allerlei andere versieringen hoeft te grijpen.
De zes composities liggen qua speelduur redelijk dicht bij elkaar en voelen meer als hoofdstukken van hetzelfde geheel dan als afzonderlijke nummers. Dat past goed bij de esoterische en religieuze thematiek van de band. Titels als Silence of the Seven Trumpets, Beneath the Sealed Heavens en The Final Manifestation geven al aardig aan in welke duistere hoek we ons bevinden. Gelukkig probeert de muziek die sfeer daadwerkelijk neer te zetten in plaats van alleen maar interessant klinkende titels aan een verzameling riffs te hangen.
Ook de productie werkt mee. Alles klinkt krachtig genoeg, maar nergens overdreven glad of modern. Er blijft voldoende vuil tussen de gitaren zitten en vooral wanneer meerdere partijen over elkaar heen schuiven krijgt de plaat een mooie, massieve sound. Tegelijkertijd blijft er genoeg ruimte over om de verschillende lagen te kunnen volgen.
Met ongeveer drie kwartier vraagt Apocryphon of the Unborn Light wel enige aandacht van de luisteraar. Dit is geen plaat die je even vluchtig tussendoor opzet en na één luisterbeurt volledig doorgrond hebt. De nummers zijn lang en de verschillen zitten soms meer in sfeer en opbouw dan in onmiddellijk herkenbare riffs. Daar moet je zin in hebben, maar wie de plaat de tijd geeft merkt dat hij langzaam verder opengaat.
Na zeventien jaar bestaan heeft Novae Militiae met Apocryphon of the Unborn Light pas zijn derde volledige album afgeleverd. Veel haast hebben deze Fransen duidelijk nog steeds niet, maar daar is weinig mis mee wanneer het resultaat zo degelijk in elkaar zit. Donker, agressief en bij vlagen behoorlijk bezwerend, met voldoende diepgang om meerdere luisterbeurten te rechtvaardigen. Geen plaat die alles omver blaast, maar wel eentje die steeds wat verder onder de huid kruipt.
