Some people around me know that, besides black metal, I also have a background in the industrial and power electronics scene. I spent several years working as a DJ within that world and organized parties and concerts together with various labels. It therefore came as no surprise that I completely embraced Bacht’n de Vulle Moane’s debut last year, placing it among my favorite albums of the year.
Now the Belgians return with Verdwazing der Dwazen, to be released through Germany’s Into Endless Chaos Records. We still have to wait a little while, as the official release date is set for September 1st, but thanks to the generosity of the band I was able to spend considerable time with the album in advance.
Where their debut mainly evoked the feeling of a black metal soundtrack to Stranger Things, the band now pushes its sound even further. Imagine Leæther Strip or Skinny Puppy recording a black metal album under the influence of the legendary Swedish Cold Meat Industry label, and you’ll have a reasonable idea of what to expect.
Massive industrial beats collide with black metal riffs and anguished vocals, resulting in what can best be described as industrial black metal in its purest form. It certainly won’t appeal to everyone, but I immediately understood what Bacht’n de Veule Moane were aiming for.
“Hellegat,” driven by an accelerated rhythm reminiscent of Joy Division’s iconic “She’s Lost Control” beat, is followed by an almost danceable track infused with black metal influences. Yet the album is far from being driven solely by synthesizers and drum machines. On “Op het einde van de boog,” Loimos of Matavitatau takes over behind the drum kit, transforming the song into a relentless and uncompromising black metal assault.
With “Angstenzuur (Ten Oorlog tegen de Wereld),” the band ventures into new territory by fully embracing power noise in the vein of Brighter Death Now. While many die-hard black metal fans may find this direction difficult to appreciate, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement. This is exactly the kind of experimentation that appeals to me.
Bacht’n de Vulle Moane remains an unusual and distinctive entity on this upcoming release, but it is precisely their fearless experimental approach that makes them stand out.
For many listeners this may be an unconventional way of approaching black metal, yet those willing to embrace experimentation will undoubtedly find plenty to enjoy here. Calling it simply black metal almost feels too limiting, as so many different influences converge throughout the album. Whatever label you choose to give it, Verdwazing der Dwazen is a remarkably varied record that keeps finding its way back onto my turntable.

Nederlands:
