Lovecraftian themes and melodic black metal often go hand in hand, but not every band manages to translate cosmic horror into compelling music. Antithetic attempts exactly that on Kadath, a six-track journey through frostbitten landscapes, occult visions, and ancient mysteries. The result is an album that feels both familiar and sincere in its execution.
The band revolves around Hauras, who handles lead guitars, vocals, and synthesizers, while Surma contributes additional guitar work and Nøkken takes care of the bass. Drum duties are shared between Onidaiko and Andrew Dewar. While Antithetic may be a relatively new name, the musicians involved clearly understand the foundations of atmospheric and melodic black metal, delivering a performance that sounds confident and well-rehearsed.
The visual presentation perfectly complements the music. The cover artwork was created by Waldeger (Thälmann), whose imagery captures the album’s cold and dreamlike atmosphere. The logo and merchandise designs were crafted by Aleksandr Degtiarev of Shaitan Design. Recording duties were handled by Mikhail Amrayev, William Seastrand, and Zane Sears, while the mixing and mastering were completed by Amrayev and Seastrand. Together they have created a production that supports the music without stripping away its underground character.
Musically, Kadath is firmly rooted in melodic black metal. The band openly cites influences such as Dissection, Horna, Thulcandra, Stormruler, and Stormkeep, and those inspirations can be heard throughout the album. Icy tremolo-picked melodies, relentless blast beats and epic guitar harmonies form the backbone of the record. The Lovecraft-inspired themes add another layer to the experience, giving the music a sense of exploration and mystery.
The obvious question is whether Antithetic can live up to those influences. While they do not quite reach the level of the genre’s most established names, they certainly come close enough to make a strong impression. The sound is noticeably unpolished, but that roughness works in the album’s favor. Rather than feeling unfinished, it gives the music an honest and pure character. The mix itself sounds excellent, with every element receiving enough space to shine. The guitars remain sharp and melodic and the drums cut through effectively.
My favorite track on the album is undoubtedly “V”. It begins with a calm and atmospheric introduction that immediately draws the listener in. The band takes its time to build tension before unleashing another wave of sonic violence. The contrast between the quieter opening section and the aggressive passages that follow works exceptionally well, making this track one of the most memorable moments on the entire album.
Kadath is a successful release that delivers exactly what fans of melodic black metal are looking for. The songs do have a tendency to blend together at times, as many of them rely on similar structures and moods. However, the quality of the songwriting and execution remains consistently high throughout the album. Antithetic may not have reinvented the genre, but they have certainly crafted a record worth revisiting.

Antithetic probeert precies dat te bereiken op Kadath, een zes nummers tellende reis langs ijzige landschappen, occulte visioenen en eeuwenoude mysteries. Het resultaat is een album dat zowel vertrouwd als oprecht aanvoelt in zijn uitvoering.

De vraag is natuurlijk of Antithetic kan tippen aan zijn grote voorbeelden. Helemaal dat niveau bereiken ze nog niet, maar ze komen dicht genoeg in de buurt om een sterke indruk achter te laten. De productie klinkt bewust ongepolijst, al werkt dat juist in het voordeel van het album. In plaats van onaf te klinken, geeft het de muziek een eerlijke en pure uitstraling. Tegelijkertijd is de mix helder genoeg om alle instrumenten voldoende ruimte te geven. De gitaren behouden hun scherpe melodieën en de drums snijden krachtig door het geheel heen.
Mijn favoriete nummer is zonder twijfel “V”. Het opent met een kalme, atmosferische introductie die de luisteraar onmiddellijk naar binnen trekt. Antithetic neemt rustig de tijd om de spanning op te bouwen voordat de volgende golf van sonisch geweld losbarst. Juist het contrast tussen de ingetogen opening en de daaropvolgende agressieve uitbarstingen maakt dit nummer tot een van de absolute hoogtepunten van het album.
Met Kadath levert Antithetic een overtuigende plaat af die precies biedt waar liefhebbers van melodische black metal naar op zoek zijn. De nummers hebben wel de neiging om hier en daar wat in elkaar over te vloeien, doordat veel composities steunen op vergelijkbare structuren en sferen. Toch blijft het niveau van de composities en de uitvoering van begin tot eind constant hoog. Antithetic vindt het genre misschien niet opnieuw uit, maar bewijst wel over voldoende talent en overtuigingskracht te beschikken om een album af te leveren dat het meer dan waard is om regelmatig opnieuw op te zetten.
